Debemus autem nos firmiores imbecillitates infirmorum sustinere,But we who are stronger must bear with the feebleness of the weak,et non nobis placere.and not so as to please ourselves.
Unusquisque vestrum proximo suo placeat in bonum,Each one of you should please his neighbor unto good,ad ædificationem.for edification.
Etenim Christus non sibi placuit,For even Christ did not please himself, sed sicut scriptum est:but as it was written:Improperia improperantium tibi ceciderunt super me.“The reproaches of those who reproached you fell upon me.”
Quæcumque enim scripta sunt,For whatever was written,ad nostram doctrinam scripta sunt:was written to teach us,ut per patientiam,so that,et consolationem Scripturarum, through patience and the consolation of the Scriptures, spem habeamus.we might have hope.
Deus autem patientiæSo may the God of patience and solace grant you to be of one mind toward one another,et solatii det vobis idipsum sapere in alterutrum secundum Jesum Christum:in accord with Jesus Christ,
ut unanimes,so that, uno ore honorificetis Deumtogether with one mouth,et patrem Domini nostri Jesu Christi.you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Propter quod suscipite invicem,For this reason, accept one another, sicut et Christus suscepit vos in honorem Dei.just as Christ also has accepted you, in the honor of God.
Dico enim Christum Jesum ministrum fuisse circumcisionis propter veritatem Dei,For I declare that Christ Jesus was the minister of circumcision because of the truth of God,ad confirmandas promissiones patrum:so as to confirm the promises to the fathers,
gentes autem super misericordia honorare Deum, and that the Gentiles are to honor God because of his mercy, sicut scriptum est:just as it was written:Propterea confitebor tibi in gentibus,“Because of this, I will confess you among the Gentiles,Domine,O Lord,et nomini tuo cantabo.and I will sing to your name.”
Et iterum dicit:And again, he says:Lætamini gentes cum plebe ejus.“Rejoice, O Gentiles, along with his people.”
Et iterum:And again:Laudate omnes gentes Dominum:“All Gentiles, praise the Lord;et magnificate eum omnes populi.and all peoples, magnify him.”
Et rursus Isaias ait:And again, Isaiah says:Erit radix Jesse,“There shall be a root of Jesse,et qui exsurget regere gentes, and he shall rise up to rule the Gentiles,in eum gentes sperabunt.and in him the Gentiles shall hope.”
Deus autem spei repleat vos omni gaudio,So may the God of hope fill you with every joyet pace in credendo:and with peace in believing,ut abundetis in spe,so that you may abound in hopeet virtute Spiritus Sancti.and in the virtue of the Holy Spirit.
Certus sum autem fratres mei et ego ipse de vobis,But I am also certain about you, my brothers, quoniam et ipsi pleni estis dilectione, that you also have been filled with love, repleti omni scientia, completed with all knowledge, ita ut possitis alterutrum monere.so that you are able to admonish one another.
Audacius autem scripsi vobis fratres ex parte,But I have written to you, brothers, more boldly than to the others, tamquam in memoriam vos reducens:as if calling you to mind again, propter gratiam, quæ data est mihi a Deo,because of the grace which has been given to me from God,
ut sim minister Christi Jesu in gentibus:so that I may be a minister of Christ Jesus among the Gentiles, sanctificans Evangelium Dei,sanctifying the Gospel of God,ut fiat oblatio gentium accepta,in order that the oblation of the Gentiles may be made acceptableet sanctificata in Spiritu Sancto.and may be sanctified in the Holy Spirit.
Habeo igitur gloriam in Christo Jesu ad Deum. Therefore, I have glory in Christ Jesus before God.
Non enim audeo aliquid loqui eorum,So I dare not speak of any of those things which Christ does not effect through me,quæ per me non efficit Christus in obedientiam gentium, unto the obedience of the Gentiles, verbo et factis:in word and deed,
in virtute signorum, et prodigiorum, with the power of signs and wonders, by power of the Holy Spirit.in virtute Spiritus Sancti:For in this way, from Jerusalem, ita ut ab Jerusalem per circuitum usque ad Illyricum repleverim Evangelium Christi.throughout its surroundings, as far as Illyricum, I have replenished the Gospel of Christ.
Sic autem prædicavi Evangelium hoc,And so I have preached this Gospel, non ubi nominatus est Christus, not where Christ was known by name,ne super alienum fundamentum ædificarem:lest I build upon the foundation of another,
sed sicut scriptum est:but just as it was written:Quibus non est annuntiatum de eo, videbunt:“Those to whom he was not announced shall perceive,et qui non audierunt, intelligent.and those who have not heard shall understand.”
Propter quodBecause of this also,et impediebar plurimum venire ad vos,I was greatly hindered in coming to you,et prohibitus sum usque adhuc.and I have been prevented until the present time.
Nunc vero ulterius locum non habens in his regionibus,Yet truly now, having no other destination in these regions, cupiditatem autem habens veniendi ad vos ex multis jam præcedentibus annis:and having already had a great desire to come to you over the past many years,
cum in Hispaniam proficisci cœpero, when I begin to set out on my journey to Spain, spero quod præteriens videam vos,I hope that, as I pass by, I may see you,et a vobis deducar illuc, and I may be guided from there by you,si vobis primum ex parte fruitus fuero.after first having borne some fruit among you.
Nunc igitur proficiscar in Jerusalem ministrare sanctis. But next I will set out for Jerusalem, to minister to the saints.
Probaverunt enim Macedonia et Achaia collationem aliquam facere in pauperes sanctorum,For those of Macedoniaqui sunt in Jerusalem.and Achaia have decided to make a collection for those of the poor among the saints who are at Jerusalem.
Placuit enim eis:And this has pleased them,et debitores sunt eorum.because they are in their debt.Nam si spiritualium eorum participes facti sunt gentiles,For,debentsince the Gentiles have become partakers of their spiritual things,et in carnalibus ministrare illis.they also ought to minister to them in worldly things.
Hoc igitur cum consummavero,Therefore, when I have completed this task,et assignavero eis fructum hunc, and have consigned to them this fruit, per vos proficiscar in Hispaniam.I shall set out, by way of you, to Spain.
Scio autem quoniam veniens ad vos, in abundantia benedictionis Evangelii Christi veniam. And I know that when I come to you I shall arrive with an abundance of the blessings of the Gospel of Christ.
Obsecro ergo vos fratres per Dominum nostrum Jesum Christum, et per caritatem Sancti Spiritus, ut adjuvetis me in orationibus vestris pro me ad Deum,Therefore, I beg you, brothers, through our Lord Jesus Christ and through the love of the Holy Spirit, that you assist me with your prayers to God on my behalf,
ut liberer ab infidelibus, qui sunt in Judæa,so that I may be freed from the unfaithful who are in Judea,et obsequii mei oblatio accepta fiat in Jerusalem sanctis, and so that the oblation of my service may be acceptable to the saints in Jerusalem.
ut veniam ad vos in gaudio per voluntatem Dei,So may I come to you with joy, through the will of God,et refrigerer vobiscum.and so may I be refreshed with you.
Deus autem pacis sit cum omnibus vobis. And may the God of peace be with you all.Amen.Amen.
