Quid ergo amplius Judæo est?So then, what more is the Jew,aut quæ utilitas circumcisionis?or what is the usefulness of circumcision?
Multum per omnem modum.Much in every way: First of all,Primum quidem quia credita sunt illis eloquia Dei.certainly, because the eloquence of God was entrusted to them.
Quid enim si quidam illorum non crediderunt? But what if some of them have not believed?numquid incredulitas illorum fidem Dei evacuabit?Shall their unbelief nullify the faith of God?Absit.Let it not be so!
Est autem Deus verax:For God is truthful, omnis autem homo mendax, but every man is deceitful;sicut scriptum est:just as it was written:Ut justificeris in sermonibus tuis:“Therefore, you are justified in your words,et vincas cum judicaris.and you will prevail when you give judgment.”
Si autem iniquitas nostra justitiam Dei commendat,But if even our injustice points to the justice of God,quid dicemus?what shall we say?Numquid iniquus est Deus, qui infert iram?Could God be unfair for inflicting wrath?
secundum hominem dico. Absit.(I am speaking in human terms.)Alioquin quomodo judicabit Deus hunc mundum?Let it not be so! Otherwise, how would God judge this world?
Si enim veritas Dei in meo mendacio abundavit in gloriam ipsius:For if the truth of God has abounded, through my falseness, unto his glory, quid adhuc et ego tamquam peccator judicor?why should I still be judged as such a sinner?
et non (sicut blasphemamur,And should we not do evil,et sicut aiunt quidam nos dicere) faciamus mala ut veniant bona:so that good may result? For so we have been slandered, and so some have claimed we said;quorum damnatio justa est.their condemnation is just.
Quid ergo? What is next?præcellimus eos?Should we try to excel ahead of them?Nequaquam.By no means!Causati enim sumus Judæos et Græcos omnes sub peccato esse,For we have accused all Jews and Greeks to be under sin,
sicut scriptum est:just as it was written:Quia non est justus quisquam:“There is no one who is just.
non est intelligens,There is no one who understands.non est requirens Deum. There is no one who seeks God.
Omnes declinaverunt,All have gone astray;simul inutiles facti sunt:together they have become useless.non est qui faciat bonum,There is no one who does good;non est usque ad unum.there is not even one.
Sepulchrum patens est guttur eorum,Their throat is an open sepulcher. With their tongues, linguis suis dolose agebant:they have been acting deceitfully.venenum aspidum sub labiis eorum:The venom of asps is under their lips.
quorum os maledictione,Their mouth is full of curseset amaritudine plenum est:and bitterness.
veloces pedes eorum ad effundendum sanguinem:Their feet are swift to shed blood.
contritio et infelicitas in viis eorum:Grief and unhappiness are in their ways.
et viam pacis non cognoverunt:And the way of peace they have not known.
non est timor Dei ante oculos eorum. There is no fear of God before their eyes.”
Scimus autem quoniam quæcumque lex loquitur,But we know that whatever the law speaks, iis, qui in lege sunt, loquitur:it speaks to those who are in the law,ut omne os obstruatur, et subditus fiat omnis mundus Deo:so that every mouth may be silenced and the entire world may be subject to God.
quia ex operibus legis non justificabitur omnis caro coram illo. For in his presence no flesh shall be justified by the works of the law.Per legem enim cognitio peccati. For knowledge of sin is through the law.
Nunc autem sine lege justitia Dei manifestata est: testificata a lege et prophetis. But now, without the law, the justice of God, to which the law and the prophets have testified, has been made manifest.
Justitia autem Dei per fidem Jesu Christi in omnes et super omnes qui credunt in eum:And the justice of God, through the faith of Jesus Christ, is in all those and over all those who believe in him.non enim est distinctio:For there is no distinction.
omnes enim peccaverunt,For all have sinnedet egent gloria Dei.and all are in need of the glory of God.
Justificati gratis per gratiam ipsius, per redemptionem quæ est in Christo Jesu,We have been justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
quem proposuit Deus propitiationem per fidem in sanguine ipsius, whom God has offered as a propitiation, through faith in his blood,ad ostensionem justitiæ suæ propter remissionem præcedentium delictorumto reveal his justice for the remission of the former offenses,
in sustentatione Dei,and by the forbearance of God,ad ostensionem justitiæ ejus in hoc tempore:to reveal his justice in this time,ut sit ipse justus, et justificans eum, qui est ex fide Jesu Christi.so that he himself might be both the Just One and the Justifier of anyone who is of the faith of Jesus Christ.
Ubi est ergo gloriatio tua?So then, where is your self-exaltation?Exclusa est.It is excluded.Per quam legem?Through what law?Factorum? That of works?Non: sed per legem fidei. No, but rather through the law of faith.
Arbitramur enim justificari hominem per fidem sine operibus legis. For we judge a man to be justified by faith, without the works of the law.
An Judæorum Deus tantum? Is God of the Jews only and not also of the Gentiles?nonne et gentium? On the contrary,Immo et gentium:of the Gentiles also.
quoniam quidem unus est Deus, qui justificat circumcisionem ex fide, et præputium per fidem. For One is the God who justifies circumcision by faith and uncircumcision through faith.
Legem ergo destruimus per fidem? Absit:Are we then destroying the law through faith? Let it not be so!sed legem statuimus.Instead, we are making the law stand.
