Veritatem dico in Christo,I am speaking the truth in Christ;non mentior:I am not lying.testimonium mihi perhibente conscientia mea in Spiritu Sancto:My conscience offers testimony to me in the Holy Spirit,
quoniam tristitia mihi magna est, because the sadness within me is great,et continuus dolor cordi meo.and there is a continuous sorrow in my heart.
Optabam enim ego ipse anathema esse a Christo pro fratribus meis,For I was desiring that I myself might be anathemized from Christ, for the sake of my brothers, qui sunt cognati mei secundum carnem, who are my kinsmen according to the flesh.
qui sunt Israëlitæ,These are the Israelites, quorum adoptio est filiorum,to whom belongs adoption as sons,et gloria, and the gloryet testamentum, and the testament,et legislatio, and the givinget obsequium, and following of the law,et promissa:and the promises.
quorum patres,Theirs are the fathers,et ex quibus est Christus secundum carnem, and from them, according to the flesh, is the Christ, qui est super omnia Deus benedictus in sæcula.who is over all things, blessed God, for all eternity.Amen.Amen.
Non autem quod exciderit verbum Dei.But it is not that the Word of God has perished.Non enim omnes qui ex Israël sunt, ii sunt Israëlitæ:For not all those who are Israelites are of Israel.
neque qui semen sunt Abrahæ, omnes filii:And not all sons are the offspring of Abraham:sed in Isaac vocabitur tibi semen:“For your offspring will be invoked in Isaac.”
id est,In other words, non qui filii carnis, hi filii Dei:those who are the sons of God are not those who are sons of the flesh, sed qui filii sunt promissionis, but those who are sons of the Promise;æstimantur in semine.these are considered to be the offspring.
Promissionis enim verbum hoc est:For the word of promise is this:Secundum hoc tempus veniam:“I will return at the proper time.et erit Saræ filius. And there shall be a son for Sarah.”
Non solum autem illa:And she was not alone.sedFor Rebecca also,et Rebecca ex uno concubitu habens, having conceived by Isaac our father,Isaac patris nostri.from one act,
Cum enim nondum nati fuissent, when the children had not yet been born, aut aliquid boni egissent, and had not yet done anything goodaut mali (ut secundum electionem propositum Dei maneret),or bad (such that the purpose of God might be based on their choice),
non ex operibus, and not because of deeds, sed ex vocante dictum est ei quia major serviet minori, but because of a calling, it was said to her: “The elder shall serve the younger.”
sicut scriptum est:So also it was written:Jacob dilexi,“I have loved Jacob,Esau autem odio habui.but I have hated Esau.”
Quid ergo dicemus? What should we say next?numquid iniquitas apud Deum?Is there unfairness with God?Absit.Let it not be so!
Moysi enim dicit:For to Moses he says:Miserebor cujus misereor:“I will pity whomever I pity.et misericordiam præstabo cujus miserebor. And I will offer mercy to whomever I will pity.”
Igitur non volentis,Therefore, it is not based on those who choose, neque currentis, nor on those who excel, sed miserentis est Dei.but on God who takes pity.
Dicit enim Scriptura Pharaoni:For Scripture says to the Pharaoh:Quia in hoc ipsum excitavi te,“I have raised you up for this purpose,ut ostendam in te virtutem meam:so that I may reveal my power by you,et ut annuntietur nomen meum in universa terra.and so that my name may be announced to all the earth.”
Ergo cujus vult miseretur,Therefore, he takes pity on whomever he wills,et quem vult indurat.and he hardens whomever he wills.
Dicis itaque mihi:And so, you would say to me:Quid adhuc queritur? voluntati enim ejus quis resistit?“Then why does he still find fault? For who can resist his will?”
O homo, tu quis es,O man, who are you to question God?qui respondeas Deo? numquid dicit figmentum ei qui se finxit:How can the thing that has been formed say to the One who formed him:Quid me fecisti sic?“Why have you made me this way?”
an non habet potestatem figulus luti ex eadem massa facere aliud quidem vas in honorem, aliud vero in contumeliam? And does not the potter have the authority over the clay to make, from the same material, indeed, one vessel unto honor, yet truly another unto disgrace?
Quod si Deus volens ostendere iram, et notum facere potentiam suam,What if God, wanting to reveal his wrath and to make his power known, sustinuit in multa patientia vasa iræ,endured, with much patience, vessels deserving wrath, apta in interitum, fit to be destroyed,
ut ostenderet divitias gloriæ suæ in vasa misericordiæ,so that he might reveal the wealth of his glory, within these vessels of mercy,quæ præparavit in gloriam.which he has prepared unto glory?
QuosAnd so it is with those of us whom he has also called,et vocavit nos non solum ex Judæis,not only from among the Jews, sed etiam in gentibus, but even from among the Gentiles,
sicut in Osee dicit:just as he says in Hosea:Vocabo non plebem meam,“I will call those who were not my people, plebem meam:‘my people,’et non dilectam, and she who was not beloved, dilectam:‘beloved,’et non misericordiam consecutam, and she who had not obtained mercy, misericordiam consecutam.‘one who has obtained mercy.’
Et erit:And this shall be:in loco, ubi dictum est eis:in the place where it was said to them,Non plebs mea vos:‘You are not my people,’ibi vocabuntur filii Dei vivi.there they shall be called the sons of the living God.”
Isaias autem clamat pro Israël:And Isaiah cried out on behalf of Israel:Si fuerit numerus filiorum Israël tamquam arena maris,“When the number of the sons of Israel is like the sand of the sea, reliquiæ salvæ fient.a remnant shall be saved.
Verbum enim consummans,For he shall complete his word,et abbrevians in æquitate:while abbreviating it out of equity.quia verbum breviatum faciet Dominus super terram:For the Lord shall accomplish a brief word upon the earth.”
et sicut prædixit Isaias:And it is just as Isaiah predicted:Nisi Dominus Sabaoth reliquisset nobis semen,“Unless the Lord of hosts had bequeathed offspring, sicut Sodoma facti essemus,we would have become like Sodom,et sicut Gomorrha similes fuissemus.and we would have been made similar to Gomorrah.”
Quid ergo dicemus? What should we say next?Quod gentes, quæ non sectabantur justitiam, apprehenderunt justitiam:That the Gentiles who did not follow justice have attained justice, justitiam autem, quæ ex fide est.even the justice that is of faith.
Israël vero sectando legem justitiæ,Yet truly, Israel, though following the law of justice,in legem justitiæ non pervenit.has not arrived at the law of justice.
Quare? Why is this?Quia non ex fide,Because they did not seek it from faith, sed quasi ex operibus:but as if it were from works.offenderunt enim in lapidem offensionis,For they stumbled over a stumbling block,
sicut scriptum est:just as it was written:Ecce pono in Sion lapidem offensionis,“Behold,et petram scandali:I am placing a stumbling block in Zion,et omnis qui credit in eum,and a rock of scandal.non confundetur. But whoever believes in him shall not be confounded.”
