Nam ipsi scitis,For you yourselves know, fratres, brothers, introitum nostrum ad vos, quia non inanis fuit:that our acceptance among you was not empty.

sed ante passi,Instead,et contumeliis affecti (sicut scitis) in Philippis, having previously suffered and been treated shamefully, as you know, fiduciam habuimus in Deo nostro,at Philippi, we had confidence in our God,loqui ad vos Evangelium Dei in multa sollicitudine.so as to speak the Gospel of God to you with much solicitude.

Exhortatio enim nostra non de errore,For our exhortation was not in error, neque de immunditia, nor from impurity, neque in dolo, nor with deception.

sed sicut probati sumus a Deo ut crederetur nobis Evangelium:But, just as we have been tested by God, so that the Gospel would be entrusted to us,ita loquimur non quasi hominibus placentes,so also did we speak, not so as to please men,sed Deo, qui probat corda nostra.but rather to please God, who tests our hearts.

Neque enim aliquando fuimus in sermone adulationis,And neither did we, at any time, become flattering in speech, sicut scitis: neque in occasione avaritiæ:as you know, nor did we seek an opportunity for avarice,Deus testis est:as God is witness.

nec quærentes ab hominibus gloriam,Nor did we seek the glory of men, neque a vobis, neither from you, neque ab aliis.nor from others.

Cum possemus vobis oneri esse ut Christi apostoli:And although we could have been a burden to you, as Apostles of Christ, sed facti sumus parvuli in medio vestrum, instead we became like little ones in your midst, tamquam si nutrix foveat filios suos.like a nurse cherishing her children.

Ita desiderantes vos,So desirous were we for you that we were willing to hand over to you, cupide volebamus tradere vobis non solum Evangelium Dei,not only the Gospel of God,sed etiam animas nostras:but even our own souls.quoniam carissimi nobis facti estis. For you have become most beloved to us.

Memores enim estis,For you remember, brothers, fratres, laboris nostri, our hardship and weariness.et fatigationis: nocte ac die operantes,We preached the Gospel of God among you,ne quem vestrum gravaremus, prædicavimus in vobis Evangelium Dei.working night and day, so that we would not be burdensome to any of you.

Vos testes estis, et Deus, quam sancte, et juste, et sine querela, vobis, qui credidistis, fuimus:You are witnesses, as is God, of how holy and just and blameless we were with you who have believed.

sicut scitis,And you know the manner, qualiter unumquemque vestrum (sicut pater filios suos)with each one of you, like a father with his sons,

deprecantes vos, et consolantes,in which we were pleading with you and consoling you, testificati sumus, ut ambularetis digne Deo,bearing witness, so that you would walk in a manner worthy of God,qui vocavit vos in suum regnum et gloriam.who has called you into his kingdom and glory.

Ideo et nos gratias agimus Deo sine intermissione:For this reason also, quoniam cum accepissetis a nobis verbum auditus Dei,we give thanks to God without ceasing:accepistis illud, because, non ut verbum hominum, when you had accepted from us the Word of the hearing of God,sed (sicut est vere) verbum Dei,you accepted it not as the word of men,qui operatur in vobis, but (as it truly is) as the Word of God,qui credidistis:who is working in you who have believed.

vos enim imitatores facti estis, fratres, ecclesiarum Dei, quæ sunt in Judæa in Christo Jesu: quia eadem passi estis et vos a contribulibus vestris, sicut et ipsi a Judæis:For you, brothers, have become imitators of the churches of God which are at Judea, in Christ Jesus. For you, too, have suffered the same things from your fellow countrymen as they have suffered from the Jews,

qui et Dominum occiderunt Jesum, who also killed both the Lord Jesus,et prophetas, and the Prophets,et nos persecuti sunt, and who have persecuted us.et Deo non placent,But they do not please God,et omnibus hominibus adversantur, and so they are adversaries to all men.

prohibentes nos gentibus loqui ut salvæ fiant,They prohibit us to speak to the Gentiles, so that they may be saved,ut impleant peccata sua semper:and thus do they continually add to their own sins.pervenit enim ira Dei super illos usque in finem. But the wrath of God will overtake them in the very end.

Nos autem fratres desolati a vobis ad tempus horæ,And we, brothers, having been deprived of you for a short time, aspectu,in sight, non corde, but not in heart, abundantius festinavimus faciem vestram videre cum multo desiderio:have hurried all the more to see your face, with a great desire.

quoniam voluimus venire ad vos,For we wanted to come to you, (indeed, I,ego quidem Paulus, et semel,Paul, attempted to do so once,et iterum: sed impedivit nos Satanas.and then again,) but Satan impeded us.

Quæ est enim nostra spes aut gaudium,For what is our hope, and our joy,aut corona gloriæ?and our crown of glory?nonne vos ante Dominum nostrum Jesum Christum estis in adventu ejus?Is it not you, before our Lord Jesus Christ at his return?

vos enim estis gloria nostra et gaudium. For you are our glory and our joy.
