Propter quod non sustinentes amplius,Because of this, willing to wait no longer, placuit nobis remanere Athenis,it was pleasing to us to remain at Athens, solis:alone.
et misimus Timotheum fratrem nostrum,And we sent Timothy,et ministrum Dei in Evangelio Christi, our brother and a minister of God in the Gospel of Christ,ad confirmandos vos,to confirm you and to exhort you,et exhortandos pro fide vestra:on behalf of your faith,
ut nemo moveatur in tribulationibus istis:so that no one would be disturbed during these tribulations.ipsi enim scitis quod in hoc positi sumus. For you yourselves know that we have been appointed to this.
Nam et cum apud vos essemus,For even while we were with you,prædicebamus vobis passuros nos tribulationes,we predicted to you that we would suffer tribulations, sicut et factum est, even as it has happened,et scitis.and as you know.
ProptereaFor this reason also,et ego amplius non sustinens,I was not willing to wait any longer, misi ad cognoscendam fidem vestram:and I sent to find out about your faith,ne forte tentaverit vos is qui tentat, lest perhaps he who tempts may have tempted you,et inanis fiat labor noster.and our labor might have been in vain.
Nunc autem veniente Timotheo ad nos a vobis,But then, when Timothy arrived to us from you,et annuntiante nobis fidem et caritatem vestram,he reported to us your faith and charity,et quia memoriam nostri habetis bonam semper, and that you keep a good remembrance of us always, desiderantes nos videre, sicut et nos quoque vos:desiring to see us, just as we likewise desire to see you.
ideo consolati sumus,As a result, fratres,we were consoled in you,in vobis in omni necessitatebrothers,et tribulatione nostra,in the midst of all our difficulties and tribulations, per fidem vestram, through your faith.
quoniam nunc vivimus, si vos statis in Domino. For we now live so that you may stand firm in the Lord.
Quam enim gratiarum actionem possumus Deo retribuere pro vobis in omni gaudio,For what thanks would we be able to repay to God because of you,quo gaudemus propter vos ante Deum nostrum, for all the joy with which we rejoice over you before our God?
nocteFor night and day,ac die abundantius orantes, ever more abundantly,ut videamus faciem vestram,we are praying that we may see your face,et compleamus ea quæ desunt fidei vestræ?and that we may complete those things that are lacking in your faith.
Ipse autem Deus, et Pater noster,But may God our Father himself,et Dominus noster Jesus Christus, and our Lord Jesus Christ, dirigat viam nostram ad vos.direct our way to you.
Vos autem Dominus multiplicet,And may the Lord multiply you,et abundare faciat caritatem vestram in invicem, and make you abound in your charity toward one anotheret in omnes, and toward all, quemadmodum et nos in vobis:just as we also do toward you,
ad confirmanda corda vestra sine querela in sanctitate,in order to confirm your hearts without blame, in sanctity, ante Deum et Patrem nostrum, before God our Father,in adventu Domini nostri Jesu Christi cum omnibus sanctis ejus.unto the return of our Lord Jesus Christ, with all his saints.Amen.Amen.
