Fidelis sermo:It is a faithful saying:si quis episcopatum desiderat,if a man desires the episcopate,bonum opus desiderat.he desires a good work.
Oportet ergo episcopum irreprehensibilem esse,Therefore, it is necessary for a bishop to be beyond reproach,unius uxoris virum, sobrium,the husband of one wife, sober,prudentem,prudent,ornatum,gracious,pudicum,chaste,hospitalem,hospitable,doctorem,a teacher,
non vinolentum,not a drunkard,non percussorem, sed modestum:not combative but restrained,non litigiosum,not quarrelsome,non cupidum, sednot covetous;
suæ domui bene præpositum:but a man who leads his own house well,filios habentem subditos cum omni castitate.having children who are subordinate with all chastity.
Si quis autem domui suæ præesse nescit,For if a man does not know how to lead his own house,quomodo ecclesiæ Dei diligentiam habebit?how will he take care of the Church of God?
Non neophytum:He must not be a new convert,ne in superbiam elatus,lest, being elated by pride,in judicium incidat diaboli.he may fall under the sentence of the devil.
Oportet autem illum et testimonium habere bonum ab iis qui foris sunt,And it is necessary for him also to have good testimony from those who are outside,ut non in opprobrium incidat,so that he may not fall into disreputeet in laqueum diaboli.and the snare of the devil.
Diaconos similiter pudicos,Similarly, deacons must be chaste,non bilingues,not double-tongued,non multo vino deditos,not given to much wine,non turpe lucrum sectantes:not pursuing tainted profit,
habentes mysterium fidei in conscientia pura.holding to the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience.
Et hi autem probentur primum:And these things should be proven first,et sic ministrent,and then they may minister,nullum crimen habentes.being without offense.
Mulieres similiter pudicas,Similarly, the women must be chaste,non detrahentes,not slanderers,sobrias, fideles in omnibus.sober, faithful in all things.
Diaconi sint unius uxoris viri,Deacons should be the husband of one wife,qui filiis suis bene præsint,men who lead their own childrenet suis domibus.and their own houses well.
Qui enim bene ministraverint, gradum bonum sibi acquirent,For those who have ministered well will acquire for themselves a good position,et multam fiduciam in fide, quæ est in Christo Jesu.and much confidence in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.
Hæc tibi scribo,I am writing these things to you,sperans me ad te venire cito:with the hope that I will come to you soon.
si autem tardavero,But,ut scias quomodo oporteat te in domo Dei conversari,if I am delayed,quæ est ecclesia Dei vivi,you should know the manner in which it is necessary to conduct yourself in the house of God,columnawhich is the Church of the living God,et firmamentum veritatis.the pillar and the foundation of truth.
Et manifeste magnum est pietatis sacramentum,And it is clearly great, this mystery of piety,quod manifestatum est in carne,which was manifested in the flesh,justificatum est in spiritu,which was justified in the Spirit,apparuit angelis,which has appeared to Angels,prædicatum est gentibus,which has been preached to the Gentiles,creditum est in mundo,which is believed in the world,assumptum est in gloria.which has been taken up in glory.
