Paulus Apostolus Jesu Christi per voluntatem Dei,Paul, secundum promissionem vitæ,an Apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God,quæ est in Christo Jesu,in accord with the promise of the life which is in Christ Jesus,

Timotheo carissimo filio:to Timothy, most beloved son.gratia,Grace, misericordia, mercy, peace, pax a Deo Patre, et Christo Jesu Domino nostro.from God the Father and from Christ Jesus our Lord.

Gratias ago Deo,I give thanks to God,cui servio a progenitoribus in conscientia pura, whom I serve, as my forefathers did, with a pure conscience.quod sine intermissione habeam tui memoriam in orationibus meis,For without ceasing I hold the remembrance of you in my prayers, nocte ac dienight and day,

desiderans te videre, desiring to see you, memor lacrimarum tuarum, ut gaudio implear, recalling your tears so as to be filled with joy,

recordationem accipiens ejus fidei, calling to mind the same faith,quæ est in te non ficta, which is in you unfeigned,quæ et habitavit primum in avia tua Loide, which also first dwelt in your grandmother, Lois,et matre tua Eunice, and in your mother, Eunice, certus sum autem quod et in te.and also, I am certain, in you.

Propter quam causam admoneo te ut resuscites gratiam Dei,Because of this, I admonish you to revive the grace of God,quæ est in te per impositionem manuum mearum.which is in you by the imposition of my hands.

Non enim dedit nobis Deus spiritum timoris:For God has not given us a spirit of fear, sed virtutis, but of virtue,et dilectionis, and of love,et sobrietatis.and of self-restraint.

Noli itaque erubescere testimonium Domini nostri,And so, do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, neque me vinctum ejus:nor of me, his prisoner. Instead, sed collabora Evangelio secundum virtutem Dei:collaborate with the Gospel in accord with the virtue of God,

qui nos liberavit, et vocavit vocatione sua sancta, who has freed us and has called us to his holy vocation, non secundum opera nostra, not according to our works, sed secundum propositum suum, et gratiam, but according to his own purpose and grace,quæ data est nobis in Christo Jesu ante tempora sæcularia.which was given to us in Christ Jesus, before the ages of time.

Manifestata est autem nunc per illuminationem Salvatoris nostri Jesu Christi,And this has now been made manifest by the illumination of our Savior Jesus Christ, qui destruxit quidem mortem, who certainly has destroyed death, illuminavit autem vitam, and who has also illuminated lifeet incorruptionem per Evangelium:and incorruption through the Gospel.

in quo positus sum ego prædicator,Of this Gospel, I have been appointed a preacher,et Apostolus, and an Apostle,et magister gentium.and a teacher of the Gentiles.

Ob quam causam etiam hæc patior,For this reason, I also suffer these things.sed non confundor. But I am not confounded.Scio enim cui credidi,For I know in whom I have believed,et certus sum quia potens est depositum meum servare in illum diem.and I am certain that he has the power to preserve what was entrusted to me, unto that day.

Formam habe sanorum verborum, quæ a me audisti in fide, et in dilectione in Christo Jesu.Hold to the kind of sound words that you have heard from me in the faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.

Bonum depositum custodi per Spiritum Sanctum,Guard the good entrusted to you through the Holy Spirit, qui habitat in nobis.who lives within us.

Scis hoc,Know this:quod aversi sunt a me omnes, qui in Asia sunt, that all those who are in Asia have turned away from me,ex quibus est Phigellus, et Hermogenes.among whom are Phigellus and Hermogenes.

Det misericordiam Dominus Onesiphori domui:May the Lord have mercy on the house of Onesiphorus, quia sæpe me refrigeravit, because he has often refreshed me,et catenam meam non erubuit:and he has not been ashamed of my chains.

sed cum Romam venisset,Instead, sollicite me quæsivit, when he had arrived in Rome,et invenit.he anxiously sought me and found me.

Det illi Dominus invenire misericordiam a Domino in illa die.May the Lord grant to him to obtain mercy from the Lord in that day.Et quanta Ephesi ministravit mihi, tu melius nosti. And you know well in how many ways he has ministered to me at Ephesus.
