Tu ergo fili mi,And as for you, confortare in gratia,my son,quæ est in Christo Jesu:be strengthened by the grace which is in Christ Jesus,

et quæ audisti a me per multos testes, and by the things which you have heard from me through many witnesses.hæc commenda fidelibus hominibus,These things encourage faithful men,qui idonei erant et alios docere.who shall then be suitable to teach others also.

Labora sicut bonus miles Christi Jesu.Labor like a good soldier of Christ Jesus.

Nemo militans Deo implicat se negotiis sæcularibus:No man, acting as a soldier for God, entangles himself in worldly matters,ut ei placeat, cui se probavit.so that he may be pleasing to him for whom he has proven himself.

Nam et qui certat in agone, non coronatur nisi legitime certaverit. Then, too, whoever strives in a competition is not crowned, unless he has competed lawfully.

Laborantem agricolam oportet primum de fructibus percipere. The farmer who labors ought to be the first to share in the produce.

Intellige quæ dico:Understand what I am saying.dabit enim tibi Dominus in omnibus intellectum. For the Lord will give you understanding in all things.

Memor esto Dominum Jesum Christum resurrexisse a mortuis ex semine David,Be mindful that the Lord Jesus Christ, who is the offspring of David, has risen again from the dead, secundum Evangelium meum, according to my Gospel.

in quo laboro usque ad vincula,I labor in this Gospel, quasi male operans:even while chained like an evildoer.sed verbum Dei non est alligatum. But the Word of God is not bound.

Ideo omnia sustineo propter electos,I endure all things for this reason:ut et ipsi salutem consequantur, for the sake of the elect, so that they, too,quæ est in Christo Jesu, cum gloria cælesti.may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus, with heavenly glory.

Fidelis sermo:It is a faithful saying:nam si commortui sumus, that if we have died with him,et convivemus:we will also live with him.

si sustinebimus,If we suffer,et conregnabimus:we will also reign with him.si negaverimus,If we deny him,et ille negabit nos:he will also deny us.

si non credimus,If we are unfaithful, ille fidelis permanet,he remains faithful:negare seipsum non potest.he is not able to deny himself.

Hæc commone,Insist on these things, testificans coram Domino.testifying before the Lord.Noli contendere verbis:Do not be contentious about words,ad nihil enim utile est,for this is useful for nothingnisi ad subversionem audientium.but the subversion of listeners.

Sollicite cura teipsum probabilem exhibere Deo, operarium inconfusibilem, recte tractantem verbum veritatis.Be solicitous in the task of presenting yourself before God as a proven and unashamed worker who has handled the Word of Truth correctly.

Profana autem et vaniloquia devita:But avoid profane or empty talk.multum enim proficiunt ad impietatem:For these things advance one greatly in impiety.

et sermo eorum ut cancer serpit:And their word spreads like a cancer:ex quibus est Hymenæus et Philetus, among these are Hymenaeus and Philetus,

qui a veritate exciderunt, dicentes resurrectionem esse jam factam, who have fallen away from the truth by saying that the resurrection is already complete.et subverterunt quorumdam fidem. And so they have subverted the faith of certain persons.

Sed firmum fundamentum Dei stat,But the firm foundation of God remains standing, habens signaculum hoc:having this seal:cognovit Dominus qui sunt ejus, the Lord knows those who are his own,et discedat ab iniquitate omnis qui nominat nomen Domini.and all who know the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.

In magna autem domo non solum sunt vasa aurea,But,et argentea,in a large house, sed et lignea, there are not only vessels of gold and of silver,et fictilia:but also those of wood and of clay;et quædam quidem in honorem, and certainly some are held in honor,quædam autem in contumeliam.but others in dishonor.

Si quis ergo emundaverit se ab istis,If anyone, then, will have cleansed himself from these things, erit vas in honorem sanctificatum,he shall be a vessel held in honor,et utile Domino ad omne opus bonum paratum.sanctified and useful to the Lord, prepared for every good work.

Juvenilia autem desideria fuge,So then, flee from the desires of your youth, sectare vero justitiam, yet truly, pursue justice, faith, fidem, spem, hope, charity, caritatem, and peace,et pacem cum iis qui invocant Dominum de corde puro.along with those who call upon the Lord from a pure heart.

Stultas autem et sine disciplina quæstiones devita:But avoid foolish and undisciplined questions, sciens quia generant lites.for you know that these produce strife.

Servum autem Domini non oportet litigare:For the servant of the Lord must not be contentious, sed mansuetum esse ad omnes, but instead he must be meek toward everyone, docibilem, teachable, patientem, patient,

cum modestia corripientem eos qui resistunt veritati, correcting with self-restraint those who resist the truth.nequando Deus det illis pœnitentiam ad cognoscendam veritatem,For at any time God may give them repentance, so as to recognize the truth,

et resipiscant a diaboli laqueis, and then they may recover from the snares of the devil,a quo captivi tenentur ad ipsius voluntatem.by whom they are held captive at his will.
