In die vigesimaOn the twenty-fourth day of the month,et quarta mensis,in the sixth month,in sexto mense,in the second year of king Darius,in anno secundo Darii regis.they began.

In septimo mense,And in the seventh month, vigesimaon the twenty-first of the month,et prima mensis, the word of the Lord came, factum est verbum Domini in manu Aggæi prophetæ,by the hand of Haggai the prophet, dicens:saying:

Loquere ad Zorobabel, filium Salathiel,Speak to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, ducem Juda, the governor of Judah,et ad Jesum, filium Josedec, and to Jesus the son of Jehozadak, sacerdotem magnum, et ad reliquos populi, the high priest, and to the remainder of the people, dicens:saying:

Quis in vobis est derelictus,Who is left among you,qui vidit domum istam in gloria sua prima?who saw this house in its first glory?et quid vos videtis hanc nunc? And how do you see it now? Is it not, numquid non ita est,in comparison to that, quasi non sit in oculis vestris?as nothing in your eyes?

Et nunc confortare,And now be strengthened,Zorobabel,Zerubbabel, dicit Dominus;says the Lord.et confortare, Jesu,And be strengthened, fili Josedec, sacerdos magne;Jesus the son of Jehozadak,et confortare, the high priest.omnis populus terræ,And be strengthened, dicit Dominus exercituum:all people of the land,et facite (quoniam ego vobiscum sum, says the Lord of hosts. For I am with you, dicit Dominus exercituum)says the Lord of hosts.

verbum quod pepigi vobiscum cum egrederemini de terra Ægypti:And act according to the word that I planted with you when you departed from the land of Egypt.et spiritus meus erit in medio vestrum:And my Spirit will be in your midst.nolite timere.Do not be afraid.

Quia hæc dicit Dominus exercituum:For thus says the Lord of hosts:Adhuc unum modicum est,There is yet one brief time,et ego commovebo cælum, and I will move heavenet terram, and earth,et mare, and the seaet aridam.and the dry land.

Et movebo omnes gentes,And I will move all nations.et veniet desideratus cunctis gentibus:And the Desired of all nations will arrive.et implebo domum istam gloria,And I will fill this house with glory, dicit Dominus exercituum.says the Lord of hosts.

Meum est argentum,Mine is the silver,et meum est aurum, and mine is the gold, dicit Dominus exercituum.says the Lord of hosts.

Magna erit gloria domus istius novissimæ plus quam primæ,Great shall be the glory of this house, the last more than the first, dicit Dominus exercituum:says the Lord of hosts.et in loco isto dabo pacem,And in this place, I will bestow peace, dicit Dominus exercituum.says the Lord of hosts.

In vigesima et quarta noni mensis,On the twenty-fourth of the ninth month,in anno secundo Darii regis,in the second year of king Darius, factum est verbum Domini ad Aggæum prophetam, the word of the Lord came to Haggai the prophet, dicens:saying:

Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum:Thus says the Lord of hosts:Interroga sacerdotes legem, the priests question the law, dicens:saying:

Si tulerit homo carnem sanctificatam in ora vestimenti sui,If a man will have carried sanctified flesh in the pocket of his garment,et tetigerit de summitate ejus panem, and the top of it touches his bread, aut pulmentum,or appetizer, aut vinum,or wine, aut oleum,or oil,aut omnem cibum,or any food, numquid sanctificabitur?shall it be sanctified?Respondentes autem sacerdotes, dixerunt:But the priests responded by saying,Non.“No.”

Et dixit Aggæus:And Haggai said,Si tetigerit pollutus in anima ex omnibus his,“If the polluted in soul will have touched any of all these things, numquid contaminabitur?shall it be contaminated?”Et responderunt sacerdotes,And the priests respondedet dixerunt:and said,Contaminabitur.“It shall be contaminated.”

Et respondit Aggæus, et dixit:And Haggai answered and he said:Sic populus iste,Such is this people,et sic gens ista ante faciem meam, and such is this nation before my face, dicit Dominus, says the Lord,et sic omne opus manuum eorum:and such is all the work of their hands.et omnia quæ obtulerunt ibi, contaminata erunt. And so all that they have offered there has been contaminated.

Et nunc ponite corda vestra a die hac et supra,And now, consider in your hearts, from this day and beyond, antequam poneretur lapis super lapidem in templo Domini.before stone may be placed upon stone in the temple of the Lord:

Cum accederetis ad acervum viginti modiorum, when you approached a pile of twenty measures,et fierent decem;and they became ten,et intraretis ad torcular, and you entered to the press,ut exprimeretis quinquaginta lagenas,to press out fifty bottles,et fiebant viginti.and they became twenty,

Percussi vos vento urente, how I struck you with a burning wind,et aurugine, and a mildew,et grandine omnia opera manuum vestrarum:and a hailstorm, all the works of your hand,et non fuit in vobis qui reverteretur ad me,yet there was no one among you who returned to me,dicit Dominus.says the Lord.

Ponite corda vestra ex die ista,Set your hearts from this dayet in futurum, and into the future,a die vigesima et quarta noni mensis:from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month,a die qua fundamenta jacta sunt templi Domini, from the day that the foundations of the temple of the Lord have been uttered, ponite super cor vestrum.and place it upon your heart.

Numquid jam semen in germine est,Has the seed been germinated yet?et adhuc vinea, et ficus,And has the vine, and the fig tree,et malogranatum, and the pomegranate,et lignum olivæ non floruit?and the olive tree still not flourished?ex die ista benedicam. From this day on, I will bless you.

Et factum est verbum Domini secundo ad Aggæum in vigesimaAnd the word of the Lord came a second time to Haggai,et quarta mensis,on the twenty-fourth of the month, dicens:saying:

Loquere ad Zorobabel ducem Juda,Speak to Zerubbabel the governor of Judah, dicens:saying:Ego movebo cælum pariter et terram,I will move both heaven and earth.

et subvertam solium regnorum,And I will overturn the throne of kingdoms,et conteram fortitudinem regni gentium:and I will crush the strength of the kingdom of the Gentiles.et subvertam quadrigam et ascensorem ejus,And I will overturn the four-horse chariot,et descendent equi, and its rider;et ascensores eorum, and the horses and their riders shall be brought down, vir in gladio fratris sui.a man by the sword of his brother.

In die illa,In that day, dicit Dominus exercituum, assumam te,says the Lord of hosts, I will take you,Zorobabel, fili Salathiel,Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, serve meus,my servant, dicit Dominus:says the Lord,et ponam te quasi signaculum, and will set you like a seal, quia te elegi, dicit Dominus exercituum.for I have chosen you, says the Lord of hosts.
