In mense octavo,In the eighth month,in anno secundo Darii regis,in the second year of king Darius, factum est verbum Domini ad Zachariam filium Barachiæ filii Addo prophetam, the word of the Lord came to Zechariah the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo, the prophet, dicens:saying:
Iratus est Dominus super patres vestros iracundia. The Lord has become angry over the resentful anger of your fathers.
Et dices ad eos:And you shall say to them:Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum:Thus says the Lord of hosts:Convertimini ad me,Turn to me,ait Dominus exercituum, says the Lord of hosts,et convertar ad vos,and I will turn to you, dicit Dominus exercituum.says the Lord of hosts.
Ne sitis sicut patres vestri,Do not be like your fathers,ad quos clamabant prophetæ priores,to whom the former prophets cried out, dicentes:saying:Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum:Thus says the Lord of hosts:Convertimini de viis vestris malis,Turn from your evil wayset de cogitationibus vestris pessimis:and from your wicked thoughts.et non audierunt,But they did not heed, neque attenderunt ad me,and neither did they pay attention to me,dicit Dominus.says the Lord.
Patres vestri,Your fathers, ubi sunt?where are they?et prophetæ numquid in sempiternum vivent? And will the prophets live unceasingly?
Verumtamen verba mea, et legitima mea,Yet truly my words and my lawfulness,quæ mandavi servis meis prophetis, which I entrusted to my servants the prophets, numquid non comprehenderunt patres vestros, et conversi sunt, were indeed comprehended by your fathers, and so they were converted,et dixerunt:and they said:Sicut cogitavit Dominus exercituum facere nobis secundum vias nostras, et secundum adinventiones nostras,Just as the Lord of hosts decided to do to us, according to our ways and according to our inventions, fecit nobis?so has he done to us.
In die vigesima et quarta undecimi mensis Sabath,On the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month, which is called Shevat,in anno secundo Darii,in the second year of Darius, factum est verbum Domini ad Zachariam filium Barachiæ filii Addo prophetam, the word of the Lord came to Zechariah the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo, the prophet, dicens:saying:
Vidi per noctem,I saw by night,et ecce vir ascendens super equum rufum, and behold, a man riding on a red horse,et ipse stabat inter myrteta, and he stood among the myrtle trees,quæ erant in profundo, which were in the chasm.et post eum equi rufi,And behind him were horses: red, varii, speckled,et albi.and white.
Et dixi:And I said,Quid sunt isti,“What are these, domine mi?my lord?”Et dixit ad me angelus qui loquebatur in me:And the angel, who was speaking with me, said to me,Ego ostendam tibi quid sint hæc.“I will reveal to you what these are.”
Et respondit vir qui stabat inter myrteta,And the man that stood among the myrtle trees answered and said,et dixit:“These are they,Isti sunt quos misit Dominus ut perambulent terram.whom the Lord has sent in order to walk through the earth.”
Et responderunt angelo Domini,And those who stood among the myrtle trees answered the angel of the Lord, qui stabat inter myrteta, and they said,et dixerunt:“We have walked through the earth,Perambulavimus terram, and behold,et ecce omnis terra habitatur, all the earth is inhabitedet quiescit.and is at rest.”
Et respondit angelus Domini,And the angel of the Lord answeredet dixit:and said,Domine exercituum,“Lord of hosts, usquequo tu non misereberis Jerusalem, how long will you not have mercy on Jerusalemet urbium Juda, and on the cities of Judah, quibus iratus es?with which you have been angry?iste jam septuagesimus annus est. This is now the seventieth year.”
Et respondit Dominus angelo qui loquebatur in me verba bona,And the Lord answered the angel, who had been speaking with me,verba consolatoria.good words, consoling words.
Et dixit ad me angelus qui loquebatur in me:And the angel, who was speaking with me, said to me:Clama,Cry out, dicens:saying:Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum: Zelatus sum Jerusalem et Sion zelo magno,Thus says the Lord of hosts: I have been zealous for Jerusalem and for Zion with a great zeal.
et ira magna ego irascor super gentes opulentas,And, with a great anger, I am angry with the wealthy nations.quia ego iratus sum parum,Though I had been angry a little, ipsi vero adjuverunt in malum.truly they advanced further in evil.
Propterea hæc dicit Dominus:Because of this, thus says the Lord:Revertar ad Jerusalem in misericordiis,I will be turned back, towards Jerusalem, with mercies;et domus mea ædificabitur in ea,and my house will be built upon this, ait Dominus exercituum, says the Lord of hosts.et perpendiculum extendetur super Jerusalem. And the building line will be extended over Jerusalem.
Adhuc clama, dicens:Until then, cry out saying:Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum:Thus says the Lord of hosts: Until then,Adhuc affluent civitates meæ bonis,my cities will flow with good things, and,et consolabitur adhuc Dominus Sion, until then, the Lord will comfort Zion, and,et eliget adhuc Jerusalem.until then, he will single out Jerusalem.
Et levavi oculos meos,And I lifted up my eyes,et vidi, and I saw.et ecce quatuor cornua. And behold: four horns.
Et dixi ad angelum qui loquebatur in me:And I said to the angel, who was speaking with me,Quid sunt hæc?“What are these?”Et dixit ad me:And he said to me,Hæc sunt cornua quæ ventilaverunt Judam, et Israël, et Jerusalem.“These are the horns that have winnowed Judah and Israel and Jerusalem.”
Et ostendit mihi Dominus quatuor fabros. And the Lord showed me four workmen.
Et dixi:And I said,Quid isti veniunt facere?“What have these come to do?”Qui ait,He spoke, dicens:saying,Hæc sunt cornua quæ ventilaverunt Judam per singulos viros,“These are the horns that have winnowed Judah, through every single man,et nemo eorum levavit caput suum:and none of them lifted up his head.et venerunt isti deterrere ea,And these have come to frighten them away,ut dejiciant cornua gentium,so as to cast down the horns of the Gentiles,quæ levaverunt cornu super terram Juda ut dispergerent eam.which have lifted up a horn over the land of Judah, so as to scatter it.”
