Væ qui opulenti estis in Sion,Woe to you who have been wealthy in Zion,et confiditis in monte Samariæ:and to you who have confidence in the mountain of Samaria:optimates capita populorum, aristocrats, heads of the people, ingredientes pompatice domum Israël!who advance with a retinue into the house of Israel.

Transite in Chalane,Cross over to Calnehet videte, and see,et ite inde in Emath magnam, and go from there into Hamath the great,et descendite in Geth Palæstinorum, and descend into Gath of the Philistines,et ad optima quæque regna horum:and to the best kingdoms of these,si latior terminus eorum termino vestro est.if their limits are wider than your limits.

Qui separati estis in diem malum,You have been set aside for the day of disaster,et appropinquatis solio iniquitatis;and you approach the throne of iniquity.

qui dormitis in lectis eburneis,You sleep on beds of ivory,et lascivitis in stratis vestris;and you are lustful on your couches.qui comeditis agnum de grege,You devour lambs from the flocket vitulos de medio armenti;and calves from the midst of the herd.

qui canitis ad vocem psalterii,You sing to the sound of stringed instruments;sicut David putaverunt se habere vasa cantici, they consider themselves to have the musical abilities of David.

bibentes vinum in phialis,You drink wine in bowls,et optimo unguento delibuti, and you anoint with the best ointments;et nihil patiebantur super contritione Joseph.and they suffer nothing over the grief of Joseph.

Quapropter nunc migrabunt in capite transmigrantium,Because of this, now they will depart at the head of those who go into captivity;et auferetur factio lascivientium.and the faction of the lustful will be removed.

Juravit Dominus Deus in anima sua,The Lord God has sworn by his own soul, dicit Dominus Deus exercituum:the Lord God of hosts says:Detestor ego superbiam Jacob,I detest the arrogance of Jacob,et domos ejus odi,and I hate his houses,et tradam civitatem cum habitatoribus suis.and I will hand over the city with its inhabitants.

Quod si reliqui fuerint decem viri in domo una,For if there were ten men remaining in one house,et ipsi morientur.even they will die.

Et tollet eum propinquus suus, et comburet eum,And his closest relative will steal him away and will burn him,ut efferat ossa de domo;so that he may carry the bones out of the house.et dicet ei, qui in penetralibus domus est:And he will say to him that is in the inner most rooms of the house,Numquid adhuc est penes te?“Now is there any left that still belongs to you?”

Et respondebit:And he will answer,Finis est.“It is finished.”Et dicet ei:And he will say to him,Tace,“Be silentet non recorderis nominis Domini.and do not call to mind the name of the Lord.”

Quia ecce Dominus mandabit,For behold, the Lord has commanded,et percutiet domum majorem ruinis, and he will strike the greater house with catastrophes,et domum minorem scissionibus.and the lesser house with divisions.

Numquid currere queunt in petris equi,Can horses gallop across rocks, aut arari potest in bubalis?or is anyone able to plough with gazelles?quoniam convertistis in amaritudinem judicium,For you have turned judgment into bitternesset fructum justitiæ in absinthium.and the fruit of justice into wormwood.

Qui lætamini in nihilo; qui dicitis:You rejoice in emptiness. You say,Numquid non in fortitudine nostra assumpsimus nobis cornua?“Have we not, by our own strength, taken horns for ourselves?”

Ecce enim suscitabo super vos,For behold, domus Israël,house of Israel, dicit Dominus Deus exercituum,I will raise up a people over you, gentem, says the Lord God of hosts,et conteret vos ab introitu Emath usque ad torrentem deserti.and they will crush you from the entrance of Hamath all the way to the burning of the desert.
