Audite verbum istud,Listen to this word, quod ego levo super vos planctum:which I lift over you in lamentation.domus Israël cecidit,The house of Israel has fallen,et non adjiciet ut resurgat.and it will no longer rise again.
Virgo Israël projecta est in terram suam,The virgin of Israel has been thrown onto her land, non est qui suscitet eam.there is no one who can raise her up.
Quia hæc dicit Dominus Deus:For thus says the Lord God:Urbs de qua egrediebantur mille,In the city from which a thousand departed, relinquentur in ea centum; et de qua egrediebantur centum,a hundred will remain, and in that from which a hundred departed, relinquentur in ea decem in domo Israël.ten will remain, in the house of Israel.
Quia hæc dicit Dominus domui Israël:For thus says the Lord to the house of Israel:Quærite me,Seek meet vivetis.and you will live.
Et nolite quærere Bethel,But do not be willing to seek Bethel,et in Galgalam nolite intrare, and do not be willing to enter Gilgal,et in Bersabee non transibitis, and you will not cross into Beer-sheba.quia Galgala captiva ducetur,For Gilgal will be led into captivity,et Bethel erit inutilis.and Bethel will be useless.
Quærite Dominum,Seek the Lord and live.et vivite (ne forte comburatur ut ignis domus Joseph,Otherwise, the house of Joseph may be destroyed with fire,et devorabit, and it will devour,et non erit qui extinguat Bethel:and there will be no one who can extinguish Bethel.
qui convertitis in absinthium judicium,You turn judgment into wormwood,et justitiam in terra relinquitis):and you abandon justice on earth.
facientem Arcturum et Orionem,The Maker of Arcturus and Orion,et convertentem in mane tenebras, et diem in noctem mutantem;who turns darkness into daybreak and who changes day into night;qui vocat aquas maris, et effundit eas super faciem terræ;who calls forth the waters of the sea and who pours them out over the face of the earth:Dominus nomen est ejus:The Lord is his name.
qui subridet vastitatem super robustum,It is he who smiles destruction on the healthy,et depopulationem super potentem affert.and who brings pillaging upon the powerful.
Odio habuerunt corripientem in porta,They held hatred for the one who corrects at the gate,et loquentem perfecte abominati sunt.and they have abhorred the one who speaks perfectly.
Idcirco,Therefore, pro eo quod diripiebatis pauperem, et prædam electam tollebatis ab eo,on his behalf, because you have torn apart the poor and stolen choice prey from him:domos quadro lapide ædificabitis, et non habitabitis in eis;you will build houses with square stones and you will not dwell in them;vineas plantabis amantissimas, you will plant the most delightful vineyards,et non bibetis vinum earum.and you will not drink wine from them.
Quia cognovi multa scelera vestra,For I know your many wicked deedset fortia peccata vestra:and the strength of your sins, hostes justi, you enemies of the just, accipientes munus, accepting bribes,et pauperes deprimentes in porta.and depriving the poor at the gate.
Ideo prudens in tempore illo tacebit,Therefore, the prudent will be silent at that time, quia tempus malum est.for it is an evil time.
Quærite bonum,Seek goodet non malum, and not evil,ut vivatis;so that you may live.et erit Dominus Deus exercituum vobiscum,And the Lord God of hosts will be with you, sicut dixistis.just as you have asked.
Odite malum et diligite bonum,Hate evil and love good,et constituite in porta judicium:and establish judgment at the gate.si forte misereatur Dominus Deus exercituum reliquiis Joseph.Perhaps then the Lord God of hosts may have mercy on the remnant of Joseph.
Propterea hæc dicit Dominus Deus exercituum,Therefore, thus says the Lord God of hosts, dominator:the Sovereign:In omnibus plateis planctus; In all the streets, there will be wailing.et in cunctis quæ foris sunt,And in every place where they are outdoors, dicetur: Væ,they will say,væ!“Woe,et vocabunt agricolam ad luctum, woe!” And they will call the farmer to mourn,et ad planctum eos qui sciunt plangere.and those who know mourning to lamentation.
Et in omnibus vineis erit planctus,And in all the vineyards there will be wailing.quia pertransibo in medio tui,For I will cross through your midst, dicit Dominus.says the Lord.
Væ desiderantibus diem Domini!Woe to those who desire the day of the Lord.ad quid eam vobis? What is it to you?Dies Domini ista,The day of the Lord is this:tenebræ,darknesset non lux.and not light.
Quomodo si fugiat vir a facie leonis,It is as if a man flees from the face of a lion,et occurrat ei ursus;only to have a bear meet him;et ingrediatur domum,or,et innitatur manu sua super parietem,he enters a house and leans with his hand against the wall,et mordeat eum coluber.only to have a snake bite him.
Numquid non tenebræ dies Domini, et non lux; Will not the day of the Lord be darkness and not light,et caligo, et non splendor in ea?and gloom with no brightness in it?
Odi,I hateet projeci festivitates vestras, and have rejected your feasts;et non capiam odorem cœtuum vestrorum.and I will not accept the odor from your gatherings.
Quod si obtuleritis mihi holocautomata,For if you offer me holocaustset munera vestra, and your gifts, non suscipiam;I will not receive them;et vota pinguium vestrorum non respiciam.and I will not look upon the vows of your fatness.
Aufer a me tumultum carminum tuorum;Take away from me the tumult of your songs,et cantica lyræ tuæ non audiam.and I will not listen to the canticles of your lyre.
Et revelabitur quasi aqua judicium,And judgment will be revealed like water,et justitia quasi torrens fortis.and justice like a mighty torrent.
Numquid hostias et sacrificium obtulistis mihi in deserto quadraginta annis,Was it you who offered victims and sacrifices to me in the desert for forty years, domus Israël?house of Israel?
et portastis tabernaculum Moloch vestro,And you carried a tabernacle for your Molochet imaginem idolorum vestrorum, and the image of your idols:sidus dei vestri, the star of your god,quæ fecistis vobis.which you made for yourselves.
Et migrare vos faciam trans Damascum,And I will cause you to go into captivity across Damascus, dicit Dominus:says the Lord.Deus exercituum nomen ejus. The God of hosts is his name.
