Hic liber mandatorum Dei,“‘This is the book of the commandments of God and of the law,et lex quæ est in æternum:which exists in eternity.omnes qui tenent eam pervenient ad vitam:All those who keep it will attain to life, qui autem dereliquerunt eam,but those who have forsaken it,in mortem.to death.
Convertere, Jacob,Convert, O Jacob,et apprehende eam:and embrace it,ambula per viam ad splendorem ejus contra lumen ejus.walk in the way of its splendor, facing its light.
Ne tradas alteri gloriam tuam,Do not surrender your glory to another,et dignitatem tuam genti alienæ.nor your value to a foreign people.
Beati sumus,We have been happy,Israël,O Israel, quia quæ Deo placent manifesta sunt nobis.because the things that are pleasing to God have been made clear to us.
Animæquior esto,Be ever more peaceful in soul, populus Dei,O people of God,memorabilis Israël:the memorial of Israel.
venundati estis gentibus non in perditionem:You have been sold to the nations, not into destruction, sed propter quod in ira ad iracundiam provocastis Deum, but because of this, in resentment, you provoked God to wrath, traditi estis adversariis.and so you have been delivered to adversity.
Exacerbastis enim eum qui fecit vos,For you have exasperated him who made you,Deum æternum, the eternal God,immolantes dæmoniis,by sacrificing to evil spirits,et non Deo.and not to God.
Obliti enim estis Deum qui nutrivit vos,For you have forgotten God, who nurtured you,et contristastis nutricem vestram Jerusalem.and you have saddened Jerusalem, your nurse.
Vidit enim iracundiam a Deo venientem vobis,For she saw the wrath of God approaching you,et dixit:and she said,Audite,“Listen, confines Sion:region of Zion, adduxit enim mihi Deus luctum magnum.for God has brought upon me great sorrow.
Vidi enim captivitatem populi mei,For I have seen the captivity of my people, filiorum meorum et filiarum,my sons and daughters, quam superduxit illis Æternus.which the Eternal has led over them.
Nutrivi enim illos cum jucunditate; For I nurtured them with joy, dimisi autem illos cum fletu et luctu.but I sent them away with weeping and sorrow.
Nemo gaudeat super me viduamLet no one rejoice over me,et desolatam:a widow and a desolation,a multis derelicta sum propter peccata filiorum meorum, for I am forsaken by many because of the sins of my sons, quia declinaverunt a lege Dei.because they strayed from the law of God.
Justitias autem ipsius nescierunt,And they have not known his righteousness, nec ambulaverunt per vias mandatorum Dei,nor walked in the ways of the commandments of God,neque per semitas veritatis ejus cum justitia ingressi sunt.nor have they advanced with justice along the paths of his truth.
Veniant confines Sion,Let the region of Zion approach,et memorentur captivitatem filiorum et filiarum mearum, and remember the captivity of my sons and daughters, quam superduxit illis Æternus.which the Eternal led over them.
Adduxit enim super illos gentem de longinquo,For he has brought a far away people upon them, gentem improbam,a guilty people,et alterius linguæ,and of another language,
qui non sunt reveriti senem, who have not reverenced the aged, neque puerorum miserti sunt, et abduxerunt dilectos viduæ,nor had mercy on the children, and who have led away the beloved of the widow,et a filiis unicam desolaverunt.leaving me deserted and alone, without sons.
Ego autem,But as for me,quid possum adjuvare vos?how am I able to help you?
qui enim adduxit super vos mala,For he who has brought these evils upon you, ipse vos eripiet de manibus inimicorum vestrorum.will rescue you from the hands of your enemies.
Ambulate,Walk on,filii, sons, ambulate:walk on,ego enim derelicta sum sola.for I have been abandoned and I am alone.
Exui me stola pacis,I have taken off the garment of peaceindui autem me sacco obsecrationis, and have put on the sackcloth of supplication,et clamabo ad Altissimum in diebus meis.and I will cry out to the most High in my days.
Animæquiores estote,Be ever more peaceful, filii;sons.clamate ad Dominum,Cry out to the Lord,et eripiet vos de manu principum inimicorum.and he will rescue you from the hand of the hostile leaders.
Ego enim speravi in æternum salutem vestram,For I have placed my hope in your eternal salvation,et venit mihi gaudium a Sancto, and joy approaches me from the Holy One,super misericordia quæ veniet vobis ab æterno salutari nostro.over the mercy which will come to you by our eternal salvation.
Emisi enim vos cum luctu et ploratu:For I sent you forth with sorrow and weeping, reducet autem vos mihi Dominus cum gaudio et jucunditate in sempiternum.but the Lord will restore you to me with joy and gladness for eternity.
Sicut enim viderunt vicinæ Sion captivitatem vestram a Deo,For just as the neighbors of Zion have seen your captivity from God,sic videbunt et in celeritate salutem vestram a Deo,so also will they soon see your salvation from God,quæ superveniet vobis cum honore magno et splendore æterno.which will overcome you with great honor and eternal splendor.
Filii,Sons, patienter sustinete iram quæ supervenit vobis:endure patiently the wrath that has come upon you, persecutus est enim te inimicus tuus:for your enemy has persecuted you,sed cito videbis perditionem ipsius, but you will quickly see his destructionet super cervices ipsius ascendes.and you will climb over his neck.
Delicati mei ambulaverunt vias asperas:My delicate ones have walked rough ways, ducti sunt enim ut grex direptus ab inimicis.for they were regarded as a flock torn apart by enemies.
Animæquiores estote,Be ever more peaceful in soul, filii, sons,et proclamate ad Dominum:and call out to the Lord, erit enim memoria vestra ab eo qui duxit vos.for you will be remembered by him who led you away.
Sicut enim fuit sensus vester ut erraretis a Deo,For as much as you thought to go astray from God,decies tantum iterum convertentes requiretis eum:ten times as much again he will require of you when converting.
qui enim induxit vobis mala,For he who led you into evil, ipse rursum adducet vobis sempiternam jucunditatem cum salute vestra.he himself will again lead you to eternal happiness with your salvation.”
Animæquior esto,Be ever more peaceful in soul,Jerusalem:Jerusalem, exhortatur enim te,for he who has named you,qui te nominavit.has been affected by you.
Nocentes peribunt,The criminals who have troubled you,qui te vexaverunt:will perish,et qui gratulati sunt in tua ruina, and those who rejoiced in your ruin, punientur.will be punished.
Civitates quibus servierunt filii tui, punientur,The cities that your sons have served, will be punished,et quæ accepit filios tuos.and also, she who received your sons.
Sicut enim gavisa est in tua ruina,For just as she was glad at your ruin,et lætata est in casu tuo,and she rejoiced in your fall, sic contristabitur in sua desolatione,so also will she be grieved in her own desolation,
et amputabitur exsultatio multitudinis ejus, and the exaltation of her multitude will be cut off,et gaudimonium ejus erit in luctum.and her gladness will be turned to sorrow.
Ignis enim superveniet ei ab Æterno in longiturnis diebus,For fire will overcome her from the Eternal for many days,et habitabitur a dæmoniis in multitudine temporis.and she will be inhabited by evil spirits for a long time.
Circumspice,Look around,Jerusalem,Jerusalem,ad orientem, towards the east,et vide jucunditatem a Deo tibi venientem.and see the happiness that comes to you from God.
Ecce enim veniunt filii tui,For behold, your sons approach, quos dimisisti dispersos:whom you sent away scattered.veniunt collecti ab oriente usque ad occidentem,They approach, gathering together, from the east all the way to the west,in verbo Sancti,at the word of the Holy One,gaudentes in honorem Dei.rejoicing in the honor of God.
