Et nunc,“‘And now,Domine omnipotens,O Lord Almighty,Deus Israël,the God of Israel, anima in angustiis, the soul in anguishet spiritus anxius clamat ad te.and the troubled spirit cry out to you.
Audi,Listen,Domine,O Lord,et miserere, and be merciful, quia Deus es misericors:for you are a merciful God,et miserere nostri, and so be merciful to us,quia peccavimus ante te:for we have sinned before you.
quia tu sedes in sempiternum,For you are enthroned in eternity,et nos, peribimus in ævum?but we will pass away in time.
Domine omnipotens, Deus Israël,O Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, audi nunc orationem mortuorum Israël,listen now to the prayer of the dead of Israel and of their sons,et filiorum ipsorum qui peccaverunt ante te, et non audierunt vocem Domini Dei sui,who have sinned before you and have not listened to the voice of the Lord their God,et agglutinata sunt nobis mala.and have joined themselves to evil.
Noli meminisse iniquitatum patrum nostrorum,Remember not the iniquities of our fathers, sed memento manus tuæ et nominis tui in tempore isto:but remember your hand and your name at this time.
quia tu es Dominus Deus noster,For you are the Lord our God,et laudabimus te,and we will praise you,Domine:O Lord.
quia propter hoc dedisti timorem tuum in cordibus nostris,And for this reason, you have imparted your fear into our hearts,et ut invocemus nomen tuum, et laudemus te in captivitate nostra, and also, so that we may call upon your name and may praise you in our captivity, quia convertimur ab iniquitate patrum nostrorum, for we are converted from the iniquity of our fathers, qui peccaverunt ante te.who sinned before you.
Et ecce nos in captivitate nostra sumus hodie,And, behold, we are still in our captivity on this day,qua nos dispersisti in improperium, where you have scattered us into disgrace,et in maledictum, and into slander,et in peccatum, and into sin, secundum omnes iniquitates patrum nostrorum, according to all the iniquities of our fathers, qui recesserunt a te,who withdrew from you,Domine Deus noster.O Lord our God.
Audi,Listen,Israël,O Israel,mandata vitæ:to the commandments of life!auribus percipe,Pay attention,ut scias prudentiam.so that you may learn prudence!
Quid est,How is it,Israël,O Israel, quod in terra inimicorum es,that you are in the land of your enemies,
inveterasti in terra aliena, that you have grown old in a foreign land, coinquinatus es cum mortuis, that you are defiled with the dead, deputatus es cum descendentibus in infernum?that you are regarded as among those who are descending into hell?
Dereliquisti fontem sapientiæ:You have forsaken the fountain of wisdom.
nam si in via Dei ambulasses,For if you had walked in the way of God,habitasses utique in pace sempiterna.you would certainly have lived in everlasting peace.
Disce ubi sit prudentia,Learn where prudence is,ubi sit virtus, where virtue is,ubi sit intellectus, where understanding is,ut scias simul ubi sit longiturnitas vitæ et victus,so that you may know at the same time where long life and prosperity are,ubi sit lumen oculorum, et pax.where the light of the eyes and peace are.
Quis invenit locum ejus?Who has discovered its place?et quis intravit in thesauros ejus? And who has entered its treasure chamber?
Ubi sunt principes gentium,Where are the leaders of the peoples,et qui dominantur super bestias quæ sunt super terram?and those who rule over the beasts that are upon the earth,
qui in avibus cæli ludunt, who play among the birds of the air,
qui argentum thesaurizant, who store up treasures of silveret aurum, and gold,in quo confidunt homines,in which men trust,et non est finis acquisitionis eorum?and with whom there is no end to their acquiring, qui argentum fabricant, who work with silveret solliciti sunt, and are anxious about it,nec est inventio operum illorum?and whose works are inexplicable?
Exterminati sunt,They have been banishedet ad inferos descenderunt, and have descended to hell,et alii loco eorum surrexerunt.and others are risen up in their place.
Juvenes viderunt lumen,The youth have seen the lightet habitaverunt super terram, and have dwelt upon the earth, viam autem disciplinæ ignoraverunt, yet they are ignorant of the way of instruction.
neque intellexerunt semitas ejus,They have neither understood the paths of it,neque filii eorum susceperunt eam:nor have their sons accepted it.a facie ipsorum longe facta est;It is far from their face.
non est audita in terra Chanaan,It has not been heard of in the land of Canaan, neque visa est in Theman.nor has it been seen in Teman.
Filii quoque Agar,It is likewise with the sons of Hagar, qui exquirunt prudentiam quæ de terra est,who search for the practicality that is of the earth, negotiatores Merrhæ et Theman, the negotiators of Merran and Teman,et fabulatores, and the storytellers,et exquisitores prudentiæ et intelligentiæ:and the searchers of discretion and intelligence.viam autem sapientiæ nescierunt,Yet the way of wisdom they have not known, neque commemorati sunt semitas ejus.nor have they called to mind its paths.
O Israël,O Israel, quam magna est domus Dei,how great is the house of God,et ingens locus possessionis ejus!and how vast is the place of his possession!
magnus est,It is greatet non habet finem:and has no end!excelsus,It is exaltedet immensus.and immense!
Ibi fuerunt gigantes nominati illi,There were those who were called giants, qui ab initio fuerunt, who existed from the beginning, statura magna,of great stature, scientes bellum.expert in war.
Non hos elegit Dominus,The Lord did not choose them, neque viam disciplinæ invenerunt:nor did they discover the way of instruction;propterea perierunt, for this reason they perished,
et quoniam non habuerunt sapientiam, and, because they did not have wisdom, interierunt propter suam insipientiam.they passed away as a result of their foolishness.
Quis ascendit in cælum,Who has gone up into heaven,et accepit eam,and taken her,et eduxit eam de nubibus?and brought her down from the clouds?
Quis transfretavit mare,Who has crossed the sea,et invenit illam, and found her,et attulit illam super aurum electum?and brought her, chosen instead of gold?
Non est qui possit scire vias ejus,There is no one who is able to know her ways, neque qui exquirat semitas ejus:nor any who can search out her paths.
sed qui scit universa novit eam,Yet he who knows the universe is familiar with her,et adinvenit eam prudentia sua qui præparavit terram in æterno tempore:and in his foresight he invented her,et replevit eam pecudibushe who prepared the earth for time without end,et quadrupedibusand filled it with cattle and four-footed beasts,
qui emittit lumen, who sends out the light,et vadit, and it goes,et vocavit illud, and who summoned it,et obedit illi in tremore.and it obeyed him in fear.
Stellæ autem dederunt lumen in custodiis suis,Yet the stars have given light from their posts,et lætatæ sunt:and they rejoiced.
vocatæ sunt,They were called,et dixerunt:and so they said,Adsumus,“Here we are,”et luxerunt ei cum jucunditate, qui fecit illas.and they shined with cheerfulness to him who made them.
Hic est Deus noster,This is our God,et non æstimabitur alius adversus eum.and no other can compare to him.
Hic adinvenit omnem viam disciplinæ,He invented the way of all instruction,et tradidit illam Jacob puero suo,and delivered it to Jacob his child,et Israël dilecto suo.and to Israel his beloved.
Post hæc in terris visus est,After this, he was seen on earth,et cum hominibus conversatus est.and he conversed with men.
