Erat autem Daniel conviva regis,And so Daniel was living with the king,et honoratus super omnes amicos ejus.and he was honored above all his friends.

Erat quoque idolum apud Babylonios nomine Bel:Now there was an idol with the Babylonians named Bel.et impendebantur in eo per dies singulos similæ artabæ duodecim,And each day there was expended on him twelve great measures of fine flour,et oves quadraginta, and forty sheep, vinique amphoræ sex.and six vessels of wine.

Rex quoque colebat eum,The king likewise worshipped himet ibat per singulos dies adorare eum:and went each day to adore him, porro Daniel adorabat Deum suum.but Daniel adored his God.Dixitque ei rex:And the king said to him,Quare non adoras Bel?“Why do you not adore Bel?”

Qui respondens ait ei:And answering,Quia non colo idola manufacta,he said to him,sed viventem Deum,“Because I do not worship idols made with hands, qui creavit cælum, but the living God,et terram, who created heaven and earth,et habet potestatem omnis carnis.and who holds power over all flesh.”

Et dixit rex ad eum:And the king said to him,Non videtur tibi esse Bel vivens deus?“Does not Bel seem to you to be a living god?an non vides quanta comedat et bibat quotidie?Do you not see how much he eats and drinks every day?”

Et ait Daniel arridens:Then Daniel said,Ne erres, smiling, rex:“O king, iste enim intrinsecus luteus est,do not make a mistake,et forinsecus æreus, for this one is clay on the inside and brass on the outside, neque comedit aliquando.and he has never eaten.”

Et iratus rex vocavit sacerdotes ejus,And the king, being angry, called for his priests and said to them,et ait eis: Nisi dixeritis mihi quis est qui comedat impensas has,“If you do not tell me who it is that has eaten these expenses, moriemini.you will die.

Si autem ostenderitis quoniam Bel comedat hæc,But if you can show that Bel has eaten these, morietur Daniel,Daniel will die, quia blasphemavit in Bel.because he has blasphemed against Bel.”Et dixit Daniel regi:And Daniel said to the king,Fiat juxta verbum tuum.“Let it be according to your word.”

Erant autem sacerdotes Bel septuaginta,Now the priests of Bel were seventy, exceptis uxoribus, besides their wives,et parvulis, and little ones,et filiis.and sons.Et venit rex cum Daniele in templum Bel.And the king went with Daniel into the temple of Bel.

Et dixerunt sacerdotes Bel:And the priests of Bel said,Ecce nos egredimur foras:“Behold, we are going out, and you,et tu,O king, rex, pone escas, set out the meats,et vinum misce, and mix the wine,et claude ostium, and close the door,et signa annulo tuo:and seal it with your ring.

et cum ingressus fueris mane,And when you have entered in the morning, nisi inveneris omnia comesta a Bel,if you have not found that Bel has consumed all, morte moriemur,we will suffer death, vel Daniel qui mentitus est adversum nos.or else Daniel will, who has lied against us.”

Contemnebant autem, quia fecerant sub mensa absconditum introitum,But they had no concern because they had made a secret entrance under the table,et per illum ingrediebantur semper, et devorabant ea.and they always went in through it and devoured those things.

Factum est igitur postquam egressi sunt illi,And so it happened, after they had departed, rex posuit cibos ante Bel:that the king set the foods before Bel,præcepit Daniel pueris suis, and Daniel commanded his servants,et attulerunt cinerem, and they brought ashes,et cribravit per totum templum coram rege:and he sifted them throughout the temple in the sight of the king,et egressi clauserunt ostium, and, as they left, they shut the door,et signantes annulo regis abierunt.and after sealing it with the king’s ring, they departed.

Sacerdotes autem ingressi sunt nocte juxta consuetudinem suam,But the priests entered by night,et uxoresaccording to their custom,et filii eorum, with their wives,et comederunt omnia, and their sons,et biberunt.and they ate and drank everything.

Surrexit autem rex primo diluculo,But the king arose at first light,et Daniel cum eo.and Daniel with him.

Et ait rex:And the king said,Salvane sunt signacula,“Are the seals unbroken,Daniel?Daniel?”Qui respondit:And he answered,Salva,“They are unbroken,rex.O king.”

Statimque cum aperuisset ostium,And as soon as he had opened the door, intuitus rex mensam, the king stared at the table, exclamavit voce magna:and cried out with a loud voice,Magnus es,“Great are you,Bel,O Bel,et non est apud te dolus quisquam.and there is not any deceit with you.”

Et risit Daniel,And Daniel laughed,et tenuit regem ne ingrederetur intro:and he held back the king, so that he would not enter,et dixit:and he said,Ecce pavimentum:“Look at the pavement, animadverte cujus vestigia sint hæc.notice whose footsteps these are.”

Et dixit rex:And the king said,Video vestigia virorum,“I see the footsteps of men,et mulierum, and women,et infantium.and children.”Et iratus est rex.And the king was angry.

Tunc apprehendit sacerdotes,Then he apprehended the priests,et uxores, et filios eorum:and their wives, and their sons,et ostenderunt ei abscondita ostiola, per quæ ingrediebantur, et consumebant quæ erant super mensam.and they showed him the secret doors through which they entered and consumed the things that were on the table.

Occidit ergo illos rex, et tradidit Bel in potestatem Danielis:Therefore, the king slaughtered them and delivered Bel into the power of Daniel, qui subvertit eum, et templum ejus.who overturned him and his temple.

Et erat draco magnus in loco illo,And there was a great dragon in that place,et colebant eum Babylonii.and the Babylonians worshipped him.

Et dixit rex Danieli:And the king said to Daniel,Ecce nunc non potes dicere quia iste non sit deus vivens:“Behold, now you cannot say that this is not a living god;adora ergo eum.therefore, adore him.”

Dixitque Daniel:And Daniel said,Dominum Deum meum adoro,“I adore the Lord, my God,quia ipse est Deus vivens:for he is the living God.iste autem non est deus vivens. But that one is not a living god.

Tu autem,Therefore, rex, you give me the power,da mihi potestatem,O king,et interficiam draconem absque gladio et fuste.and I will execute this dragon without sword or club.”Et ait rex:And the king said,Do tibi.“I give it to you.”

Tulit ergo Daniel picem,And so Daniel took pitch,et adipem, and fat,et pilos, and hair,et coxit pariter:and cooked them together.fecitque massas,And he made lumps and put them into the dragon’s mouth,et dedit in os draconis, and the dragon burst open.et diruptus est draco. And he said,Et dixit:“Behold,Ecce quem colebatis.this is what you worship.”

Quod cum audissent Babylonii,When the Babylonians had heard this, indignati sunt vehementer:they were greatly indignant.et congregati adversum regem,And gathering together against the king, dixerunt:they said,Judæus factus est rex:“The king has become a Jew.Bel destruxit,He has destroyed Bel,draconem interfecit,he has executed the dragon,et sacerdotes occidit.and he has slaughtered the priests.”

Et dixerunt cum venissent ad regem:And when they came to the king,Trade nobis Danielem, they said, alioquin interficiemus te,“Deliver Daniel to us,et domum tuam.otherwise we will execute you and your house.”

Vidit ergo rex quod irruerent in eum vehementer:Thus the king saw that they pressured him vehemently, and so,et necessitate compulsus, being compelled by necessity, tradidit eis Danielem.he delivered Daniel to them.

Qui miserunt eum in lacum leonum,And they cast him into the den of lions,et erat ibi diebus sex.and he was there for six days.

Porro in lacu erant leones septem,Furthermore, in the den there were seven lions,et dabantur eis duo corpora quotidie, and they had given to them two carcasses every day,et duæ oves:and two sheep,et tunc non data sunt eis,but then they were not given to them,ut devorarent Danielem.so that they would devour Daniel.

Erat autem Habacuc propheta in Judæa,Now there was in Judea a prophet called Habakkuk,et ipse coxerat pulmentum, and he had cooked a small meal and had broken bread in a bowl,et intriverat panes in alveolo:and he was going into the field,et ibat in campum ut ferret messoribus.to bring it to the harvesters.

Dixitque angelus Domini ad Habacuc:And the angel of the Lord said to Habakkuk,Fer prandium quod habes in Babylonem Danieli,“Carry the meal that you have into Babylon, to Daniel, qui est in lacu leonum.who is in the lions’ den.”

Et dixit Habacuc:And Habakkuk said,Domine,“Lord,Babylonem non vidi,I have not seen Babylon,et lacum nescio.and I do not know the den.”

Et apprehendit eum angelus Domini in vertice ejus,And the angel of the Lord seized him by the top of his head,et portavit eum capillo capitis sui,and carried him by the hair of his head, posuitque eum in Babylone supra lacum in impetu spiritus sui.and set him in Babylon, over the den, by the force of his spirit.

Et clamavit Habacuc,And Habakkuk shouted, dicens:saying,Daniel serve Dei,“Daniel, servant of God,tolle prandium quod misit tibi Deus.take the dinner that God has sent you.”

Et ait Daniel:And Daniel said,Recordatus es mei,“You have remembered me,Deus,O God,et non dereliquisti diligentes te.and you have not abandoned those who love you.”

Surgensque Daniel comedit. And Daniel arose and ate.Porro angelus Domini restituit Habacuc confestim in loco suo.And then the angel of the Lord immediately returned Habakkuk to his place.

Venit ergo rex die septimo ut lugeret Danielem:And so, on the seventh day, the king came to mourn Daniel.et venit ad lacum,And he came to the den,et introspexit, and gazed in, and behold,et ecce Daniel sedens in medio leonum.Daniel was sitting in the midst of the lions.

Et exclamavit voce magna rex,And the king cried out with a loud voice, dicens: Magnus es,saying, “Great are you,Domine Deus Danielis.O Lord, the God of Daniel.”Et extraxit eum de lacu leonum. And he pulled him out of the lions’ den.

Porro illos,Furthermore, qui perditionis ejus causa fuerant, those who had been the cause of his downfall, intromisit in lacum,he hurled into the den,et devorati sunt in momento coram eo.and they were devoured in a moment before him.

Tunc rex ait:Then the king said,Paveant omnes habitantes in universa terra Deum Danielis:“Let all the inhabitants of the whole earth fear the God of Daniel.quia ipse est salvator,For he is the Savior, faciens signa et mirabilia in terra:working signs and miracles on earth, qui liberavit Danielem de lacu leonum.who has freed Daniel from the lions’ den.”
