In anno primo Darii filii Assueri de semine Medorum,In the first year of Darius, the son of Ahasuerus, of the offspring of the Medes, qui imperavit super regnum Chaldæorum, who ruled over the kingdom of the Chaldeans,
anno uno regni ejus,in year one of his reign, ego Daniel intellexi in libris numerum annorum,I, Daniel, understood in the books the number of the years,de quo factus est sermo Domini ad Jeremiam prophetam, concerning the word of the Lord which came to Jeremiah, the prophet,ut complerentur desolationis Jerusalem septuaginta anni.that the desolation of Jerusalem would be completed in seventy years.
Et posui faciem meam ad Dominum Deum meum rogare et deprecari in jejuniis,And I set my face to the Lord, my God, to ask and make supplication with fasting, sacco, et cinere.and sackcloth, and ashes.
Et oravi Dominum Deum meum,And I prayed to the Lord,et confessus sum,my God,et dixi:and I confessed,Obsecro, and I said,Domine Deus magne et terribilis,“I beg you, custodiens pactum,O Lord God,et misericordiam diligentibus te,great and terrible,et custodientibus mandata tua:preserving the covenant and mercy for those who love you and keep your commandments.
peccavimus,We have sinned, iniquitatem fecimus,we have committed iniquity, impie egimus,we acted impiouslyet recessimus:and have withdrawn,et declinavimus a mandatis tuis ac judiciis.and we have turned aside from your commandments as well as your judgments.
Non obedivimus servis tuis prophetis,We have not obeyed your servants, qui locuti sunt in nomine tuo regibus nostris, the prophets, who have spoken in your name to our kings, principibus nostris, our leaders, our fathers, patribus nostris, omnique populo terræ.and all the people of the land.
Tibi,To you,Domine,O Lord, justitia:is justice, nobis autem confusio faciei, but to us is confusion of face, sicut est hodie viro Juda, just as it is on this day for the men of Judah,et habitatoribus Jerusalem, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem,et omni Israël,and all Israel, his qui prope sunt, for those who are nearet his qui procul in universis terris, and those who are far off,ad quas ejecisti eos propter iniquitates eorum,in all the lands to which you have driven them,in quibus peccaverunt in te.because of their iniquities by which they have sinned against you.
Domine,O Lord,nobis confusio faciei,to us belongs confusion of face:regibus nostris,to our kings,principibus nostris,our leaders,et patribus nostris,and our fathers,qui peccaverunt.who have sinned.
Tibi autem Domino Deo nostro misericordia et propitiatio,But to you, the Lord our God, is mercy and atonement, quia recessimus a te,for we have withdrawn from you,
et non audivimus vocem Domini Dei nostri ut ambularemus in lege ejus, and we have not listened to the voice of the Lord, our God, so as to walk in his law, quam posuit nobis per servos suos prophetas.which he established for us by his servants, the prophets.
Et omnis Israël prævaricati sunt legem tuam,And all Israel has transgressed your law and has turned away,et declinaverunt ne audirent vocem tuam:not listening to your voice, and so the condemnation and the curse,et stillavit super nos maledictio et detestatio quæ scripta est in libro Moysi servi Dei,which is written in the book of Moses, servant of God, has rained down upon us,quia peccavimus ei.because we have sinned against him.
Et statuit sermones suos,And he has fulfilled his words, quos locutus est super nos et super principes nostros, which he has spoken over usqui judicaverunt nos,and over our leaders who judged us,ut superinduceret in nos magnum malum, that he would lead over us a great evil, quale numquam fuit sub omni cælo,such as has never before existed under all of heaven, secundum quod factum est in Jerusalem.according to what has been done in Jerusalem.
Sicut scriptum est in lege Moysi,Just as it has been written in the law of Moses, omne malum hoc venit super nos:all this evil has come upon us,et non rogavimus faciem tuam, and we did not entreat your face,Domine Deus noster,O Lord our God,ut reverteremur ab iniquitatibus nostris,so that we might turn back from our iniquitieset cogitaremus veritatem tuam.and consider your truth.
Et vigilavit Dominus super malitiam, et adduxit eam super nos.And the Lord kept watch over the evil and has led it over us; the Lord,Justus Dominus Deus noster in omnibus operibus suis, our God, is just in all his works, which he has accomplished,quæ fecit: non enim audivimus vocem ejus.for we have not listened to his voice.
Et nunc Domine Deus noster,And now, O Lord, our God,qui eduxisti populum tuum de terra Ægypti in manu forti, et fecisti tibi nomen secundum diem hanc:who has led your people out of the land of Egypt with a strong hand and has made yourself a name in accordance with this day:peccavimus,we have sinned, iniquitatem fecimus.we have done wrong.
Domine,O Lord,in omnem justitiam tuam avertatur, for all your righteousness, obsecro, turn away, ira tuaI beg you,et furor tuus a civitate tua Jerusalem, your anger and your fury from your city,et monte sancto tuo.Jerusalem,Propter peccata enim nostra, and from your holy mountain.et iniquitates patrum nostrorum,For,Jerusalembecause of our sins and the iniquities of our fathers,et populus tuus in opprobrium sunt omnibus per circuitum nostrum.Jerusalem and your people are a reproach to all who surround us.
Nunc ergo exaudi,Now, therefore,Deus noster, heed, O God,orationem servi tui, et preces ejus:the prayer of your servant and his requests,et ostende faciem tuam super sanctuarium tuum, and reveal your face over your sanctuary, quod desertum est propter temetipsum.which is desolate, for your own sake.
Inclina, Deus meus,Incline your ear, aurem tuam,O my God,et audi:and hear, aperi oculos tuos, et vide desolationem nostram, et civitatem super quam invocatum est nomen tuum:open your eyes and see our desolation and the city over which your name is invoked.neque enim in justificationibus nostris prosternimus preces ante faciem tuam,For it is not through our justifications that we offer requests before your face, sed in miserationibus tuis multis.but through the fullness of your compassion.
Exaudi,Heed,Domine;O Lord.placare Domine:Be pleased, attendeO Lord.et fac:Turn and act.ne moreris propter temetipsum,Do not delay,Deus meus, for your own sake, quia nomen tuum invocatum est super civitatemO my God,et super populum tuum.because your name is invoked over your city and over your people.”
Cumque adhuc loquerer, et orarem, et confiterer peccata mea,And while I was still speaking and praying and confessing my sins,et peccata populi mei Israël,and the sins of my people, Israel,et prosternerem preces meas in conspectu Dei mei, pro monte sancto Dei mei:and offering my prayers in the sight of my God, on behalf of the holy mountain of my God,
adhuc me loquente in oratione,as I was still speaking in prayer, ecce vir Gabriel, behold, the man Gabriel, quem videram in visione a principio, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, cito volans tetigit me in tempore sacrificii vespertini.flying swiftly, touched me at the time of the evening sacrifice.
Et docuit me,And he instructed me,et locutus est mihi, dixitque:and he spoke to me and said, “Now,Daniel,Daniel, nunc egressus sum ut docerem te, et intelligeres.I have come forth to teach you and to help you understand.
Ab exordio precum tuarum egressus est sermo:At the beginning of your prayers, ego autem veni ut indicarem tibi, the message came forth, quia vir desideriorum es:yet I have come to explain it to you because you are a man who is seeking.tu ergo animadverte sermonem,Therefore,et intellige visionem.you must pay close attention to the message and understand the vision.
Septuaginta hebdomades abbreviatæ sunt super populum tuum et super urbem sanctam tuam,Seventy weeks of years are concentrated on your people and on your holy city,ut consummetur prævaricatio,so that transgression shall be finished,et finem accipiat peccatum, and sin shall reach an end,et deleatur iniquitas, and iniquity shall be wiped away,et adducatur justitia sempiterna, and so that everlasting justice shall be brought in,et impleatur visio et prophetia, and vision and prophecy shall be fulfilled,et ungatur Sanctus sanctorum.and the Saint of saints shall be anointed.
Scito ergo,Therefore,et animadverte:know and take heed:ab exitu sermonis, from the going forth of the word to build up Jerusalem again,ut iterum ædificetur Jerusalem, until the Christ leader, usque ad christum ducem, there will be seven weeks of years, hebdomades septem, and sixty-two weeks of years;et hebdomades sexaginta duæ erunt:and the wide path will be built again,et rursum ædificabitur platea, and the walls,et muri in angustia temporum.in a time of anguish.
Et post hebdomades sexaginta duas occidetur christus:And after sixty-two weeks of years, the Christ leader will be slain.et non erit ejus populus qui eum negaturus est.And the people who have denied him will not be his.Et civitatem et sanctuarium dissipabit populus cum duce venturo:And the people, when their leader arrives, will destroy the city and the sanctuary.et finis ejus vastitas,And its end will be devastation,et post finem belli statuta desolatio.and, after the end of the war, the desolation will be set up.
Confirmabit autem pactum multis hebdomada una:But he will confirm a covenant with many for one week of years;et in dimidio hebdomadis deficiet hostia et sacrificium:and for half of the week of years, victim and sacrifice will nearly cease;et erit in templo abominatio desolationis:but there will be in the temple the abomination of desolation.et usque ad consummationem et finem perseverabit desolatio. And the desolation will continue even to the consummation and the end.”
