Hæc sunt verba quæ locutus est Moyses ad omnem Israël trans Jordanem in solitudine campestri,These are the words which Moses spoke to all of Israel, across the Jordan, in the plain of the wilderness opposite the Red Sea,contra mare Rubrum, inter Pharan et Tophel et Laban et Haseroth, between Paran and Tophel and Laban and Hazeroth, ubi auri est plurimum:where gold is very plentiful,

undecim diebus de Horeb per viam montis Seir usque ad Cadesbarne.eleven days from Horeb, by way of Mount Seir as far as Kadesh-barnea.

Quadragesimo anno,In the fortieth year, undecimo mense,on the eleventh month, prima die mensis,on the first day of the month, locutus est Moyses ad filios Israël omnia quæ præceperat illi Dominus,Moses told the sons of Israel all that the Lord had instructed him.ut diceret eis,And so he spoke to them,

postquam percussit Sehon regem Amorrhæorum, after he had struck down Sihon, the king of the Amorites, qui habitabat in Hesebon, who lived at Heshbon, and Og,et Og regem Basan, the king of Bashan, qui mansit in Astaroth, et in Edrai, who resided at Ashtaroth and at Edrei,

trans Jordanem in terra Moab.across the Jordan in the land of Moab.Cœpitque Moyses explanare legem,And so, Moses began to explain the law,et dicere:and to say:

Dominus Deus noster locutus est ad nos in Horeb,“The Lord our God spoke to us at Horeb, dicens:saying:Sufficit vobis quod in hoc monte mansistis:‘You have remained long enough on this mountain.

revertimini, et venite ad montem Amorrhæorum,Turn back and go to the mountain of the Amorites, and to the other places which are near it:et ad cetera quæ ei proxima sunt campestria atque montana et humiliora loca contra meridiem, et juxta littus maris, the plains as well as the mountainous regions, and the low-lying places opposite the south and along the shore of the sea, terram Chananæorum, the land of the Canaanites,et Libani usque ad flumen magnum Euphraten.and Lebanon, as far as the great river Euphrates.’

En,‘Lo,’inquit,he said, tradidi vobis:‘I have delivered it to you.ingredimini et possidete eam,Enter and possess that which the Lord swore to your fathers, super qua juravit Dominus patribus vestris Abraham,Abraham,Isaac,Isaac,et Jacob, and Jacob,ut daret illam eis, that he would give it to them,et semini eorum post eos.and to their offspring after them.’

Dixique vobis illo in tempore:And I said to you, at that time:

Non possum solus sustinere vos:‘I alone am not able to sustain you.quia Dominus Deus vester multiplicavit vos,For the Lord, your God, has multiplied you,et estis hodie sicut stellæ cæli,and you are today like the stars of heaven, plurimi.very many.

(Dominus Deus patrum vestrorum addat ad hunc numerum multa millia,May the Lord, the God of your fathers, add to this number many thousands more,et benedicat vobis sicut locutus est.)and may he bless you, just as he has said.

Non valeo solus negotia vestra sustinere,Alone,et pondus ac jurgia.I do not have the strength to endure your arbitrations and judgments and disputes.

Date ex vobis viros sapientes et gnaros,Offer, from among you, wise and experienced men,et quorum conversatio sit probata in tribubus vestris, those whose conversation has been proven within your tribes,ut ponam eos vobis principes.so that I may appoint them as your rulers.’

Tunc respondistis mihi:Then you responded to me:Bona res est, quam vis facere.‘What you intend to do is a good thing.’

Tulique de tribubus vestris viros sapientes et nobiles,And so, I took from your tribes men, wise and noble,et constitui eos principes, and I appointed them as rulers, tribunos, et centuriones,as tribunes and centurions,et quinquagenarios ac decanos, and as leaders over fifty and over ten,qui docerent vos singula.who would teach you each thing.

Præcepique eis,And I instructed them, dicens:saying:Audite illos,‘Listen to them,et quod justum est judicate:and judge what is just, sive civis sit ille, whether he is one of your citizenssive peregrinus.or a sojourner.

Nulla erit distantia personarum:There shall be no favoritism to any persons.ita parvum audietis ut magnum,So you shall listen to the little as well as to the great.nec accipietis cujusquam personam,And you shall not accept anyone’s reputation, quia Dei judicium est.for this is the judgment of God.Quod si difficile vobis visum aliquid fuerit,But if anything seems difficult to you, referte ad me,then refer it to me,et ego audiam.and I will hear it.’

Præcepique omnia quæ facere deberetis. And I instructed you in all that you were obliged to do.

Profecti autem de Horeb,Then, transivimus per eremum terribilem et maximam, setting out from Horeb, quam vidistis,we crossed through a terrible and great wasteland, per viam montis Amorrhæi,which you saw along the way of the mountain of the Amorite, sicut præceperat Dominus Deus noster nobis.just as the Lord our God had instructed us.Cumque venissemus in Cadesbarne,And when we had arrived at Kadesh-barnea,

dixi vobis:I said to you:Venistis ad montem Amorrhæi,‘You have arrived at the mountain of the Amorite, quem Dominus Deus noster daturus est nobis:which the Lord our God will give to us.

vide terram,Gaze upon the land that the Lord your God gives to you.quam Dominus Deus tuus dat tibi:Ascendascende et posside eam,and possess it,sicut locutus est Dominus Deus noster patribus tuis:just as the Lord our God has spoken to your fathers.noli timere,Do not be afraid, nec quidquam paveas.and do not become terrified by anything.’

Et accessistis ad me omnes,And you all approached meatque dixistis:and said:Mittamus viros qui considerent terram:‘Let us send men who may consider the land,et renuntient per quod iter debeamus ascendere, and who may report as to the way by which we ought to ascend,et ad quas pergere civitates.and as to which cities we ought to travel.’

Cumque mihi sermo placuisset,And since the word was pleasing to me,misi ex vobis duodecim viros,I sent from among you twelve men, singulos de tribubus suis.one from each tribe.

Qui cum perrexissent,These,et ascendissent in montana, when they had set out and had ascended the mountains, venerunt usque ad Vallem botri:arrived as far as the valley of the cluster of grapes.et considerata terra,And having considered the land,

sumentes de fructibus ejus, ut ostenderent ubertatem, having taken from its fruits in order to show its fertility, attulerunt ad nos, they brought these to us,atque dixerunt:and they said:Bona est terra, quam Dominus Deus noster daturus est nobis.‘The land that the Lord our God will give to us is good.’

Et noluistis ascendere,Yet you were not willing to go there.sed increduli ad sermonem Domini Dei nostri,Instead, being incredulous to the word of the Lord our God,

murmurastis in tabernaculis vestris, you murmured in your tents, atque dixistis:and you said:Odit nos Dominus,‘The Lord hates us,et idcirco eduxit nos de terra Ægypti, and therefore he has led us away from the land of Egypt,ut traderet nos in manu Amorrhæi,so that he might deliver us into the hand of the Amoriteatque deleret.and destroy us.

Quo ascendemus? To where should we ascend?nuntii terruerunt cor nostrum, dicentes:The messengers have terrified our heart by saying:Maxima multitudo est,“The multitude is very great,et nobis statura procerior; urbes magnæ,and taller than us. And the cities are great,et ad cælum usque munitæ:and the walls extend even to the sky.filios Enacim vidimus ibi.We have seen the sons of the Anakim there.”’

Et dixi vobis:And I said to you:Nolite metuere,‘Do not be apprehensive, nec timeatis eos:nor should you fear them.

Dominus Deus,The Lord God himself, qui ductor est vester, who is your leader, pro vobis ipse pugnabit, will fight on your behalf, sicut fecit in Ægypto cunctis videntibus.just as he did in Egypt in the sight of all.

Et in solitudine (ipse vidisti) portavit te Dominus Deus tuus,And in the wilderness (as you yourselves saw), the Lord your God carried you,ut solet homo gestare parvulum filium suum, like a man who is accustomed to carrying his little son,in omni via per quam ambulastis, along all the way that you walked, donec veniretis ad locum istum.until you arrived at this place.’

Et nec sic quidem credidistis Domino Deo vestro,And yet, despite all of this, you did not believe the Lord your God,

qui præcessit vos in via,who went before you on the way,et metatus est locum in quo tentoria figere deberetis, and who marked out the place where you should pitch your tents, nocte ostendens vobis iter per ignem, showing you the way by fire in the night,et die per columnam nubis.and by a pillar of cloud in the day.

Cumque audisset Dominus vocem sermonum vestrorum,And when the Lord had heard the voice of your words, iratus juravit, becoming angry,et ait:he swore and said:

Non videbit quispiam de hominibus generationis hujus pessimæ terram bonam,‘None of the men of this wicked generation will see the good land, quam sub juramento pollicitus sum patribus vestris, which I have promised by oath to your fathers,

præter Caleb filium Jephone:except Caleb the son of Jephuneh.ipse enim videbit eam,For he himself will see it,et ipsi dabo terram, quam calcavit, et filiis ejus, and I will give the land on which he has walked to him and to his sons, quia secutus est Dominum.because he has followed the Lord.’

Nec miranda indignatio in populum,Neither is his indignation with the people a wonder, cum mihi quoque iratus Dominus propter vos dixerit:since the Lord also became angry with me because of you, and so he said:Nec tu ingredieris illuc:‘Neither will you enter into that place.

sed Josue filius Nun minister tuus,But Joshua, the son of Nun, your minister, ipse intrabit pro te.shall himself enter on your behalf.Hunc exhortare et robora,Exhort and strengthen this man,et ipse sorte terram dividet Israëli.and he himself shall divide the land by lot to Israel.

Parvuli vestri,Your little ones,de quibus dixistis quod captivi ducerentur, about whom you said that they would be led away as captives,et filii qui hodie boniand your sons,ac mali ignorant distantiam, who to this day are ignorant of the difference between good and evil, ipsi ingredientur:they shall enter.et ipsis dabo terram,And I will give the land to them,et possidebunt eam.and they will possess it.

Vos autem revertimini,But as for you,et abite in solitudinem per viam maris Rubri.turn back and go out to the wilderness, by way of the Red Sea.’

Et respondistis mihi:And you responded to me:Peccavimus Domino:‘We have sinned against the Lord.ascendemusWe will ascend and fight,et pugnabimus, just as the Lord our God has instructed.’sicut præcepit Dominus Deus noster. And having been equipped with weapons,Cumque instructi armis pergeretis in montem, when you were setting out for the mountain,

ait mihi Dominus:the Lord said to me:Dic ad eos:‘Say to them:Nolite ascendere,Do not ascend and do not fight.neque pugnetis:For I am not with you.non enim sum vobiscum:Otherwise,ne cadatis coram inimicis vestris.you may fall in the sight of your enemies.’

Locutus sum, et non audistis:I spoke, and you did not listen.sed adversantes imperio Domini,But, opposing the order of the Lord,et tumentes superbia, and swelling with pride, ascendistis in montem.you ascended onto the mountain.

Itaque egressus Amorrhæus,And so, having gone forth, the Amorite, qui habitabat in montibus, who was living in the mountains,et obviam veniens, persecutus est vos, came against you and pursued you, sicut solent apes persequi:just as a swarm of bees would do.et cecidit de Seir usque Horma. And he struck you down from Seir all the way to Hormah.

Cumque reversi ploraretis coram Domino,And when you returned and were weeping in the sight of the Lord, non audivit vos,he would not hear you,nec voci vestræ voluit acquiescere.nor was he willing to agree to your voice.

Sedistis ergo in Cadesbarne multo tempore. Therefore, you camped at Kadesh-barnea for a long time.”
