Accesserunt autem et principes familiarum Galaad filii Machir filii Manasse,Then the leaders of the families of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh,de stirpe filiorum Joseph:from the stock of the sons of Joseph,locutique sunt Moysi coram principibus Israël,approached and spoke to Moses before the leaders of Israel,atque dixerunt:and they said:
Tibi domino nostro præcepit Dominus ut terram sorte divideres filiis Israël,“The Lord has instructed you, our ruler, so that you would divide the land by lot to the sons of Israel,et ut filiabus Salphaad fratris nostri dares possessionem debitam patri:and so that you would give to the daughters of Zelophehad, our brother, the possession owed to their father.
quas si alterius tribus homines uxores acceperint,But if men of another tribe receive them as wives,sequetur possessio sua,their possession will follow them,et translata ad aliam tribum,and having been transferred to another tribe,de nostra hæreditate minuetur.there will be a reduction in our inheritance.
Atque ita fiet,And so it may be that,ut cum jubilæus, id est,when the Jubilee of remission,quinquagesimus annus remissionis advenerit,that is, the fiftieth year, has arrived,confundatur sortium distributio,the distribution by lots shall be confounded,et aliorum possessio ad alios transeat.and the possession of the one shall be transferred to others.”
Respondit Moyses filiis Israël,Moses answered the sons of Israel, and,et Domino præcipiente ait:at the instruction of the Lord, he said:Recte tribus filiorum Joseph locuta est.“The tribe of the sons of Joseph has spoken correctly.
Et hæc lex super filiabus Salphaad a Domino promulgata est:And so, this is the law which has been promulgated by the Lord about the daughters of Zelophehad:nubant quibus volunt,Let them marry whomever they may wish,tantum ut suæ tribus hominibus:but only among the men of their own tribe,
ne commisceatur possessio filiorum Israël de tribu in tribum.lest the possession of the sons of Israel become commingled,Omnes enim viri ducent uxores de tribufrom tribe to tribe.et cognatione sua:For all men shall take wives from their own tribe and kinship;
et cunctæ feminæ de eadem tribu maritos accipient:and all women shall take husbands from their same tribe,ut hæreditas permaneat in familiis,so that the inheritance may remain within the families,
nec sibi misceantur tribus,and so that the tribes may not be mingled together,sed ita maneantbut may remain such as they were separated by the Lord.”
ut a Domino separatæ sunt. Feceruntque filiæ Salphaad ut fuerat imperatum:And the daughters of Zelophehad acted according to what was ordered.
et nupserunt Maala,And Mahlah, and Tirzah,et Thersa,and Hoglah,et Hegla,and Milcah,et Melcha, et Noa, filiis patrui suiand Noa were wed to the sons of their paternal uncle,
de familia Manasse,from the family of Manasseh,qui fuit filius Joseph:who was a son of Joseph.et possessio, quæ illis fuerat attributa, mansit in tribu et familia patris earum.And the possession which had been distributed to them remained in the tribe and family of their father.
