Si surrexerit in medio tui prophetes,“If there will have arisen in your midst a prophet, aut qui somnium vidisse se dicat,or someone who claims that he had seen a dream,et prædixerit signum atque portentum, and if he will have predicted sign and portent,

et evenerit quod locutus est,and if what he has spoken happens,et dixerit tibi:and he says to you,Eamus,‘Let us go and follow strange gods,’et sequamur deos alienos quos ignoras, which you have not known,et serviamus eis:‘and let us serve them,’

non audies verba prophetæ illius aut somniatoris:you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer.quia tentat vos Dominus Deus vester,For the Lord your God is testing you,ut palam fiat utrum diligatis eum an non, in toto corde, et in tota anima vestra.so that it may become clear whether or not you love him with all your heart and with all your soul.

Dominum Deum vestrum sequimini,Follow the Lord your God,et ipsum timete, and fear him,et mandata illius custodite, and keep his commandments,et audite vocem ejus:and listen to his voice.ipsi servietis,Him shall you serve,et ipsi adhærebitis.and to him shall you cling.

Propheta autem ille aut fictor somniorum interficietur:But that prophetquia locutus est ut vos averteret a Domino Deo vestro,or forger of dreams shall be put to death.qui eduxit vos de terra Ægypti,For he has spoken so as to turn you away from the Lord your God,et redemit vos de domo servitutis:who led you away from the land of Egyptut errare te faceret de via,and who redeemed you from the house of servitude, quam tibi præcepit Dominus Deus tuus:and so as to cause you to wander from the way that the Lord your God has entrusted to you.et auferes malum de medio tui.And so shall you remove the evil from your midst.

Si tibi voluerit persuadere frater tuus filius matris tuæ,If your brother, aut filius tuusthe son of your mother, vel filia,or your own son or daughter, sive uxor quæ est in sinu tuo,or your wife who is in your bosom, aut amicus,or your friend, quem diligis ut animam tuam, whom you love like your own soul, clam dicens:were willing to persuade you secretly,Eamus, saying:et serviamus diis alienis,‘Let us go,quos ignoras tu,and serve foreign gods,’et patres tui, which neither you nor your fathers have known,

cunctarum in circuitu gentium, gods from any of the surrounding nations,quæ juxta vel procul sunt, whether these are near or far away,ab initio usque ad finem terræ,from the beginning even to the end of the earth,

non acquiescas ei,you should neither agree with him,nec audias, nor listen to him.neque parcat ei oculus tuus ut miserearis et occultes eum,And your eye should not spare him so that you take pity on him and conceal him.

sed statim interficies:Instead, you shall put him to death promptly.sit primum manus tua super eum,Let your hand be upon him first, and after that,et postea omnis populus mittat manum.let the hands of all the people be sent forth.

Lapidibus obrutus necabitur:He shall be killed by being overwhelmed with stones.quia voluit te abstrahere a Domino Deo tuo,For he was willing to draw you away from the Lord your God,qui eduxit te de terra Ægypti, who led you away from the land of Egypt,de domo servitutis:from the house of servitude.

ut omnis Israël audiens timeat,So may all of Israel, upon hearing this,et nequaquam ultra faciat quippiam hujus rei simile.be afraid, so that nothing like this will ever be done again.

Si audieris in una urbium tuarum,If,quas Dominus Deus tuus dabit tibi ad habitandum,in one of your cities which the Lord your God will give to you as a habitation, dicentes aliquos:you hear someone say:

Egressi sunt filii Belial de medio tui,‘The sons of Belial have departed from your midst,et averterunt habitatores urbis suæ,and they have persuaded the inhabitants of their city, atque dixerunt:and they have said:Eamus,“Let us go,et serviamus diis alienis quos ignoratis:and serve strange gods,”’ which you have not known:

quære sollicite et diligenter, inquire carefully and diligently, rei veritate perspecta, seeking the truth of the matter.si inveneris certum esse quod dicitur,And if you find that what was said is certain,et abominationem hanc opere perpetratam, and that this abomination is a work which has been perpetrated,

statim percuties habitatores urbis illius in ore gladii, you shall promptly strike down the inhabitants of that city with the edge of the sword.et delebis eamAnd you shall destroy it,ac omnia quæ in illa sunt, along with all the things that are in it,usque ad pecora.even the flocks.

Quidquid etiam supellectilis fuerit,Then all the household goods which are there, congregabis in medio platearum ejus, you shall gather together in the midst of its streets,et cum ipsa civitate succendes, and you shall set fire to these, along with the city itself, ita ut universa consumas Domino Deo tuo,so that you may consume everything for the Lord your God,et sit tumulus sempiternus.and so that it may be an everlasting tomb.Non ædificabitur amplius,It shall no longer be built up.

et non adhærebit de illo anathemate quidquam in manu tua:And there shall remain nothing of that anathema in your hand,ut avertatur Dominus ab ira furoris sui,so that the Lord may turn from the wrath of his fury,et misereatur tui,and may take pity on you, multiplicetque te sicut juravit patribus tuis, and may multiply you, just as he swore to your fathers,

quando audieris vocem Domini Dei tui custodiens omnia præcepta ejus, when you will heed the voice of the Lord your God, keeping all his precepts,quæ ego præcipio tibi hodie, which I am entrusting to you this day,ut facias quod placitum est in conspectu Domini Dei tui.so that you may do what is pleasing in the sight of the Lord your God.”
