1Si acceperit homo uxorem,“If a man takes a wife,et habuerit eam,and he has her,et non invenerit gratiam ante oculos ejus propter aliquam fœditatem:and she does not find favor before his eyes because of some vileness,scribet libellum repudii,then he shall write a bill of divorce,et dabit in manu illius,and he shall give it to her hand,et dimittet eam de domo sua.and he shall dismiss her from his house.
2Cumque egressa alterum maritum duxerit,And when, having departed, she has married another,
3et ille quoque oderit eam,and if he likewise hates her,dederitque ei libellum repudii,and has given her a bill of divorce,et dimiserit de domo sua,and has dismissed her from his house,vel certe mortuus fuerit:or if indeed he has died,
4non poterit prior maritus recipere eam in uxorem:then the former husband cannot take her back as a wife.quia polluta est, et abominabilis facta est coram Domino:For she has been polluted and has become abominable in the sight of the Lord.ne peccare facias terram tuam,Otherwise, you may cause your land,quam Dominus Deus tuus tradiderit tibi possidendam.which the Lord your God will deliver to you as a possession, to sin.
5Cum acceperit homo nuper uxorem,When a man has recently taken a wife,non procedet ad bellum,he shall not go out to war,nec ei quippiam necessitatis injungetur publicæ,nor shall any public office be enjoined upon him. Instead,sed vacabit absque culpa domi suæ,he shall be free at home without guilt,ut uno anno lætetur cum uxore sua.so that for one year he may rejoice with his wife.
6Non accipies loco pignoris inferiorem,You shall not accept an upperet superiorem molam:or lower millstone as collateral.quia animam suam opposuit tibi.For then he will have placed his life with you.
7Si deprehensus fuerit homo sollicitans fratrem suum de filiis Israël,If a man has been caught soliciting his brother among the sons of Israel,et vendito eo acceperit pretium,and selling him in order to receive a price,interficietur,then he shall be put to death.et auferes malum de medio tui.And so shall you take away the evil from your midst.
8Observa diligenter ne incurras plagam lepræ,Observe diligently, lest you incur the wound of leprosy.sed facies quæcumque docuerint te sacerdotes Levitici generis,But you shall do whatever the priests of the Levitical stock shall teach you to do,juxta id quod præcepi eis,according to what I have instructed them.et imple sollicite.And you shall fulfill it carefully.
9Mementote quæ fecerit Dominus Deus vester Mariæ in via cum egrederemini de Ægypto.Remember what the Lord your God did to Miriam, along the way, as you were departing from Egypt.
10Cum repetes a proximo tuo rem aliquam, quam debet tibi,When you require from your neighbor anything that he owes to you,non ingredieris domum ejus ut pignus auferas:you shall not enter into his house in order to take away the collateral.
11sed stabis foris,Instead, you shall stand outside,et ille tibi proferet quod habuerit.and he will carry out to you what he has.
12Sin autem pauper est,But if he is poor,non pernoctabit apud te pignus,then the collateral shall not remain with you through the night.
13sed statim reddes ei ante solis occasum:Instead, you shall return it to him promptly, before the setting of the sun,ut dormiens in vestimento suo,so that, sleeping in his own garment,benedicat tibi,he may bless you,et habeas justitiam coram Domino Deo tuo.and you may have justice in the presence of the Lord your God.
14Non negabis mercedem indigentis,You shall not refuse the pay of the indigentet pauperis fratris tui,and the poor,sive advenæ,whether he is your brother,qui tecum moratur in terra,or he is a new arrival who dwells with you in the landet intra portas tuas est:and is within your gates.
15sed eadem die reddes ei pretium laboris sui ante solis occasum,Instead, you shall pay him the price of his labor on the same day, before the setting of the sun.quia pauper est,For he is poor,et ex eo sustentat animam suam:and with it he sustains his life. Otherwise,ne clamet contra te ad Dominum,he may cry out against you to the Lord,et reputetur tibi in peccatum.and it would be charged to you as a sin.
16Non occidentur patres pro filiis,The fathers shall not be put to death on behalf of the sons,nec filii pro patribus,nor the sons on behalf of the fathers,sed unusquisque pro peccato suo morietur.but each one shall die for his own sin.
17Non pervertes judicium advenæ et pupilli,You shall not pervert the judgment of the new arrival or the orphan,nec auferes pignoris loco viduæ vestimentum.nor shall you take away the widow’s garment as collateral.
18Memento quod servieris in Ægypto,Remember that you served in Egypt,et eruerit te Dominus Deus tuus inde.and that the Lord your God rescued you from there.Idcirco præcipio tibi ut facias hanc rem.Therefore, I am instructing you to act in this way.
19Quando messueris segetem in agro tuo,When you have reaped the grain in your field, and,et oblitus manipulum reliqueris,having forgotten, you leave behind a sheaf,non reverteris, ut tollas illum:you shall not return to take it away. Instead,sed advenam, et pupillum,you shall permit the new arrival,et viduam auferre patieris,and the orphan, and the widow to take it away,ut benedicat tibi Dominus Deus tuus in omni opere manuum tuarum.so that the Lord your God may bless you in all the works of your hands.
20Si fruges collegeris olivarum,If you have gathered the fruit of your olive trees,quidquid remanserit in arboribus,you shall not return in order to gather whatever may remain on the trees.non reverteris ut colligas:Instead,sed relinques advenæ,you shall leave it behind for the new arrival,pupillo,the orphan,ac viduæ.and the widow.
21Si vindemiaveris vineam tuam,If you harvest the vintage of your vineyard,non colliges remanentes racemos:you shall not gather the remaining clusters. Instead,sed cedent in usus advenæ,they shall fall to the use of the stranger,pupilli,the orphan,ac viduæ.and the widow.
22Memento quod et tu servieris in Ægypto,Remember that you also served in Egypt, and so,et idcirco præcipio tibi ut facias hanc rem.for this reason, I am instructing you to act in this way.”
