Si fuerit causa inter aliquos,“If there is a case between persons,et interpellaverint judices:and they apply to the judges, quem justum esse perspexerint, illi justitiæ palmam dabunt:they shall give the palm of justice to the one whom they perceive to be just, quem impium, condemnabunt impietatis.and they shall condemn of impiety the one who is impious.

Sin autem eum, qui peccavit, dignum viderint plagis:But if they see that the one who has sinned is worthy of stripes, prosternent, et coram se facient verberari.they shall prostrate him and cause him to be beaten before them.Pro mensura peccati erit et plagarum modus:According to the measure of the sin, so shall the measure of the stripes be.

ita dumtaxat,Even so,ut quadragenarium numerum non excedant:these shall not exceed the number of forty. Otherwise,ne fœde laceratus ante oculos tuos abeat frater tuus.your brother may depart, having been wounded shamefully before your eyes.

Non ligabis os bovis terentis in area fruges tuas. You shall not muzzle an ox as it is treading out your crops in the field.

Quando habitaverint fratres simul,When brothers are living together,et unus ex eis absque liberis mortuus fuerit, uxor defuncti non nubet alteri:and one of them dies without children, the wife of the deceased shall not marry another.sed accipiet eam frater ejus,Instead, his brother shall take her,et suscitabit semen fratris sui:and he shall raise up offspring for his brother.

et primogenitum ex ea filium nomine illius appellabit,And the first son from her, he shall call by his brother’s name,ut non deleatur nomen ejus ex Israël.so that his name will not be abolished from Israel.

Sin autem noluerit accipere uxorem fratris sui,But if he is not willing to take his brother’s wife,quæ ei lege debetur, who by law must go to him, perget mulier ad portam civitatis, the woman shall go to the gate of the city,et interpellabit majores natu, and she shall call upon those greater by birth, dicetque:and she shall say:Non vult frater viri mei suscitare nomen fratris sui in Israël,‘The brother of my husband is not willing to raise up his brother’s name in Israel;nec me in conjugem sumere.nor will he join with me.’

Statimque accersiri eum facient,And immediately, they shall summon him to be sent,et interrogabunt.and they shall question him.Si responderit: Nolo eam uxorem accipere:If he responds, ‘I am not willing to accept her as a wife,’

accedet mulier ad eum coram senioribus, then the woman shall approach him in the sight of the elders,et tollet calceamentum de pede ejus, and she shall remove his shoe from his foot, spuetque in faciem illius, et dicet:and she shall spit in his face, and she shall say:Sic fiet homini, qui non ædificat domum fratris sui.‘So shall it be done to the man who was not willing to build up his brother’s house.’

Et vocabitur nomen illius in Israël,And his name shall be called in Israel:Domus discalceati. The House of the Unshod.

Si habuerint inter se jurgium viri duo,If two men have a conflict between themselves,et unus contra alterum rixari cœperit, and one begins to do violence to the other, volensque uxor alterius eruere virum suum de manu fortioris, and if the other’s wife, miseritque manum, wanting to rescue her husband from the hand of the stronger one,et apprehenderit verenda ejus:extends her hand and grasps him by his private parts,

abscides manum illius, then you shall cut off her hand.nec flecteris super eam ulla misericordia.Neither shall you weep over her with any mercy.

Non habebis in sacculo diversa pondera,You shall not have differing weights, majusgreater and lesser,et minus:in your bag.

nec erit in domo tua modius major,Neither shall there be in your house a greateret minor.and a lesser measure.

Pondus habebis justum et verum,You shall have a just and a true weight,et modius æqualis et verus erit tibi:and your measure shall be equal and true,ut multo vivas tempore super terram,so that you may live for a long time upon the land, quam Dominus Deus tuus dederit tibi.which the Lord your God will give to you.

Abominatur enim Dominus tuus eum qui facit hæc,For the Lord your God abominates him who does these things,et aversatur omnem injustitiam.and he loathes all injustice.

Memento quæ fecerit tibi Amalec in via quando egrediebaris ex Ægypto:Remember what Amalek did to you, along the way, when you were departing from Egypt:

quomodo occurrerit tibi, et extremos agminis tui,how he met you and cut down the stragglers of the troops, qui lassi residebant, who were sitting down, ceciderit, exhausted, quando tu eras fame et labore confectus:when you were consumed by hunger and hardship,et non timuerit Deum.and how he did not fear God.

Cum ergo Dominus Deus tuus dederit tibi requiem,Therefore, when the Lord your God will give you rest,et subjecerit cunctas per circuitum nationes in terra, quam tibi pollicitus est:and you will have subdued all the surrounding nations, in the land which he has promised to you, delebis nomen ejus sub cælo.you shall delete his name from under heaven.Cave ne obliviscaris.Take care not to forget this.”
