Itaque conversi ascendimus per iter Basan: egressusque est Og rex Basan in occursum nobis cum populo suo ad bellandum in Edrai.“And so, having turned back, we ascended by the way of Bashan. And Og, the king of Bashan, went forth with his people to meet us in warfare at Edrei.

Dixitque Dominus ad me: Ne timeas eum:And the Lord said to me: ‘You should not fear him.quia in manu tua traditus est cum omni populo ac terra sua:For he has been delivered into your hand, with all his people as well as his land.faciesque ei sicut fecisti Sehon regi Amorrhæorum,And you shall do to him just as you have done to Sihon, qui habitavit in Hesebon.the king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon.’

Tradidit ergo Dominus Deus noster in manibus nostris etiam Og regem Basan,Therefore, the Lord our God delivered into our hands, now Og,et universum populum ejus:the king of Bashan, and all his people.percussimusque eos usque ad internecionem,And we struck them down unto utter annihilation,

vastantes cunctas civitates illius uno tempore.laying waste to all his cities at one time.Non fuit oppidum, quod nos effugeret:There was not a village which escaped from us:sexaginta urbes, sixty cities, omnem regionem Argob regni Og in Basan.the entire region of Argob, the kingdom of Og, in Bashan.

Cunctæ urbes erant munitæ muris altissimis,All the cities were fortified with very high walls, portisque et vectibus, and with gatesabsque oppidis innumeris, and bars,quæ non habebant muros.in addition to innumerable villages which had no walls.

Et delevimus eos,And we wiped them out, sicut feceramus Sehon regi Hesebon, just as we had done to Sihon, disperdentes omnem civitatem, the king of Heshbon, virosquedestroying every city,ac mulieresand its men,et parvulos:as well as women and children.

jumenta autemBut the cattle and the spoils of the cities,et spolia urbium diripuimus.we plundered.

Tulimusque illo in tempore terram de manu duorum regum Amorrhæorum,And at that time, we took the land from the hand of the two kings of the Amorites, qui erant trans Jordanem:who were across the Jordan:a torrente Arnon usque ad montem Hermon, from the torrent Arnon as far as Mount Hermon,

quem Sidonii Sarion vocant, which the Sidonians call Sirion,et Amorrhæi Sanir:and the Amorites call Senir,

omnes civitates, all the cities that are situated in the plain,quæ sitæ sunt in planitie, and the entire land of Gilead and Bashan,et universam terram Galaad et Basan usque ad Selcha, all the way to Salecah and Edrei,et Edrai civitates regni Og in Basan.cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan.

Solus quippe Og rex Basan restiterat de stirpe gigantum. For only Og, the king of Bashan, was left behind out of the race of the giants.Monstratur lectus ejus ferreus,His bed of iron is on display, qui est in Rabbath filiorum Ammon, novem cubitos habens longitudinis,(it is in Rabbah, among the sons of Ammon) being nine cubits in length,et quatuor latitudinis ad mensuram cubiti virilis manus.and four in width, according to the measure of the cubit of a man’s hand.

Terramque possedimus tempore illo ab Aroër,And we possessed the land, at that time, from Aroer,quæ est super ripam torrentis Arnon, which is above the bank of the torrent Arnon, usque ad mediam partem montis Galaad:as far as the middle of Mount Gilead.et civitates illius dedi Ruben et Gad.And I gave its cities to Ruben and Gad.

Reliquam autem partem Galaad,Then I delivered the remaining part of Gilead,et omnem Basan regni Og,and all of Bashan, the kingdom of Og,tradidi mediæ tribui Manasse, which is the entire region of Argob, omnem regionem Argob:to one half of the tribe of Manasseh.cunctaque Basan vocatur Terra gigantum. And all of Bashan is called the land of the giants.

Jair filius Manasse possedit omnem regionem Argob usque ad terminos Gessuri et Machati.Jair, the son of Manasseh, possessed all the region of Argob,Vocavitque ex nomine suo Basan,as far as the borders of Geshur and Maacath. And he called Bashan by his own name,Havoth Jair,Havvoth Jair,id est, that is,Villas Jair, usque in præsentem diem.the villages of Jair, even to the present day.

Machir quoque dedi Galaad.Likewise, to Machir, I gave Gilead.

Et tribubus Ruben et Gad dedi de terra Galaad usque ad torrentem Arnon medium torrentis,And to the tribes of Ruben and Gad, I gave from the land of Gilead as far as the torrent Arnon,et confinium usque ad torrentem Jeboc, one half of the torrent and its confines, even to the torrent Jabbok, qui est terminus filiorum Ammon:which is along the border of the sons of Ammon,

et planitiem solitudinis, and the plain of the wilderness, atque Jordanem,as well as the Jordan,et terminos Cenereth usque ad mare deserti, and the borders of Chinnereth, all the way to the sea of the desert, quod est salsissimum, which is very salty,ad radices montis Phasga contra orientem.to the base of Mount Pisgah toward the east.

Præcepique vobis in tempore illo,And I instructed you at that time, dicens:saying:Dominus Deus vester dat vobis terram hanc in hæreditatem:‘The Lord your God gives to you this land as an inheritance. Having armed yourselves, expediti præcedite fratres vestros filios Israël omnes viri robusti,go before your brothers, the sons of Israel, all you strong men.

absque uxoribus, et parvulis,Leave behind your wives and little ones, atque jumentis.as well as the cattle.Novi enim quod plura habeatis pecora,For I know that you have many cattle,et in urbibus remanere debebunt, quas tradidi vobis, and they should remain in the cities which I have delivered to you,

donec requiem tribuat Dominus fratribus vestris, sicut vobis tribuit:until the Lord provides rest to your brothers, just as he has provided for you.et possideant ipsi etiam terram,And they, too, shall possess the land, quam daturus est eis trans Jordanem:which he will give to them beyond the Jordan.tunc revertetur unusquisque in possessionem suam, quam dedi vobis. Then each one shall return to his possession, which I have allotted to you.’

Josue quoque in tempore illo præcepi,Likewise, dicens:I instructed Joshua at that time,Oculi tui viderunt quæ fecit Dominus Deus vester duobus his regibus:saying:sic faciet omnibus regnis,‘Your eyes have seen what the Lord your God has done to these two kings.ad quæ transiturus es.So also will he do to all the kingdoms through which you shall pass.

Ne timeas eos:You should not fear them.Dominus enim Deus vester pugnabit pro vobis. For the Lord your God will fight on your behalf.’

Precatusque sum Dominum in tempore illo,And I beseeched the Lord at that time, dicens:saying:

Domine Deus,‘Lord God,tu cœpisti ostendere servo tuo magnitudinem tuam, manumque fortissimam:you have begun to reveal your greatness and your very strong hand to your servant.neque enim est alius deus vel in cælo, vel in terra,For there is no other god, either in heaven or on earth, qui possit facere opera tua,who is able to accomplish your works,et comparari fortitudini tuæ.or to be compared to your strength.

Transibo igitur,Therefore, I will cross over,et videbo terram hanc optimam trans Jordanem, and I will view this excellent land beyond the Jordan,et montem istum egregium, and this singular mountain,et Libanum.and Lebanon.’

Iratusque est Dominus mihi propter vos,And the Lord became angry with me because of you,nec exaudivit me,and he would not heed me.sed dixit mihi:But he said to me:Sufficit tibi:‘It is enough for you.nequaquam ultra loquaris de hac re ad me.You shall no longer speak to me at all about this matter.

Ascende cacumen Phasgæ,Ascend to the summit of Pisgah,et oculos tuos circumfer ad occidentem, and look around with your eyes to the west,et ad aquilonem, and to the north, austrumqueand to the south,et orientem, and to the east,et aspice;and behold it.nec enim transibis Jordanem istum. For you shall not cross this Jordan.

Præcipe Josue,Instruct Joshua,et corrobora eum atque conforta:and encourage and strengthen him.quia ipse præcedet populum istum,For he shall go before this people,et dividet eis terram quam visurus es.and he shall distribute to them the land that you will see.’

Mansimusque in valle contra fanum Phogor. And we remained in the valley, opposite the shrine of Peor.”
