Et nunc,“And now,Israël,O Israel, audi præcepta et judicia, quæ ego doceo te:listen to the precepts and judgments which I am teaching to you, so that,ut faciens ea, vivas,by doing these, you may live,et ingrediens possideas terram, and you may enter and possess the land, quam Dominus Deus patrum vestrorum daturus est vobis.which the Lord, the God of your fathers, will give to you.

Non addetis ad verbum, quod vobis loquor,You shall not add to the word which I speak to you,nec auferetis ex eo:neither shall you take away from it.custodite mandata Domini Dei vestri, quæ ego præcipio vobis.Preserve the commandments of the Lord your God which I am teaching to you.

Oculi vestri viderunt omnia quæ fecit Dominus contra Beelphegor,Your eyes have seen all that the Lord has done against Baal-peor,quomodo contriverit omnes cultores ejus de medio vestri.in what manner he has crushed all of his worshippers from among you.

Vos autem qui adhæretis Domino Deo vestro,But you who adhere to the Lord your God are all still alive, vivitis universi usque in præsentem diem.to the present day.

Scitis quod docuerim vos præcepta atque justitias,You know that I have taught you precepts as well as justices, sicut mandavit mihi Dominus Deus meus:just as the Lord my God has commanded me.sic facietis ea in terra, quam possessuri estis:And so shall you do in the land that you will possess.

et observabitis et implebitis opere. And you shall observe and fulfill these in practice.Hæc est enim vestra sapientia, et intellectus coram populis,For this is your wisdom and understanding in the sight of the peoples, so that,ut audientes universa præcepta hæc, dicant:upon hearing all these precepts, they may say:En populus sapiens et intelligens,‘Lo, a wise and understanding people, gens magna.a great nation.’

Nec est alia natio tam grandis,Neither is there any other nation so great,quæ habeat deos appropinquantes sibi, which has its gods so near to them, sicut Deus noster adest cunctis obsecrationibus nostris.as our God is present to all our petitions.

Quæ est enim alia gens sic inclyta, ut habeat cæremonias,For what other nation is there so renowned as to have ceremonies, justaque judicia, and just judgments,et universam legem, quam ego proponam hodie ante oculos vestros?and the entire law that I will set forth today before your eyes?

Custodi igitur temetipsum,And so,et animam tuam sollicite.guard yourself and your soul carefully.Ne obliviscaris verborum,You should not forget the words that your eyes have seen,quæ viderunt oculi tui,and do not let them be cut away from your heart,et ne excidant de corde tuo cunctis diebus vitæ tuæ.throughout all the days of your life.Docebis ea filios ac nepotes tuos,You shall teach them to your sons and to your grandsons,

a die in quo stetisti coram Domino Deo tuo in Horeb, from the day on which you stood before the Lord your God at Horeb, quando Dominus locutus est mihi, when the Lord spoke to me,dicens:saying:Congrega ad me populum,‘Gather the people to me,ut audiant sermones meos,so that they may listen to my words,et discant timere me omni tempore quo vivunt in terra, and may learn to fear me, throughout all the time that they are alive on earth, doceantque filios suos.and so that they may teach their children.’

Et accessistis ad radices montis,And you approached the base of the mountain, qui ardebat usque ad cælum:which was burning even toward heaven.erantque in eo tenebræ,And there was a darkness upon it,et nubes, and a cloud,et caligo.and a mist.

Locutusque est Dominus ad vos de medio ignis. And the Lord spoke to you from the midst of fire.Vocem verborum ejus audistis,You heard the voice of his words,et formam penitus non vidistis.but you did not see any form at all.

Et ostendit vobis pactum suum,And he revealed his covenant to you, quod præcepit ut faceretis, which he instructed you to carry out,et decem verba, quæ scripsit in duabus tabulis lapideis.and the ten words which he wrote on two tablets of stone.

Mihique mandavit in illo tempore ut docerem vos cæremoniasAnd he commanded me,et judicia,at that time,quæ facere deberetis in terra, that I should teach you the ceremonies and judgments which you must carry out, quam possessuri estis.in the land that you shall possess.

Custodite igitur sollicite animas vestras. And so,Non vidistis aliquam similitudinem in die, guard your souls carefully.qua locutus est vobis Dominus in Horeb de medio ignis:You saw no likeness on the day that the Lord God spoke to you on Horeb from the midst of fire.

ne forte decepti faciatis vobis sculptam similitudinem,Otherwise, perhaps being deceived, you might have made a graven image, aut imaginem masculi vel feminæ:or an image of male or female,

similitudinem omnium jumentorum,a likeness of any of the beasts,quæ sunt super terram, which are upon the earth, vel avium sub cælo volantium,or of birds, which fly under heaven,

atque reptilium,or of reptiles,quæ moventur in terra, which move across the earth, sive piscium qui sub terra morantur in aquis:or of fish, which abide in the waters under the earth.

ne forte elevatis oculis ad cælum,Otherwise, videas solemperhaps lifting up your eyes to heaven,et lunam, you might look upon the sun and the moon and all the stars of heaven,et omnia astra cæli,and being deceived by error,et errore deceptus adores ea,you might adore and worship these things,et colas quæ creavit Dominus Deus tuus in ministerium cunctis gentibus, which the Lord your God created for the service of all the nations,quæ sub cælo sunt.which are under heaven.

Vos autem tulit Dominus,But the Lord has taken you up,et eduxit de fornace ferrea Ægypti, and led you away from the iron furnaces of Egypt,ut haberet populum hæreditarium,in order to have a people of inheritance, sicut est in præsenti die.just as it is to the present day.

Iratusque est Dominus contra me propter sermones vestros,And the Lord became angry against me because of your words,et juravit ut non transirem Jordanem, and he swore that I would not cross over the Jordan, nec ingrederer terram optimam, nor enter into the excellent land, quam daturus est vobis.which he will give to you.

Ecce morior in hac humo;Behold, I shall die on this soil.non transibo Jordanem:I shall not cross over the Jordan.vos transibitis,You shall cross it,et possidebitis terram egregiam.and you shall possess the singular land.

Cave nequando obliviscaris pacti Domini Dei tui,Be careful, quod pepigit tecum, lest you at some time forget the covenant of the Lord your God,et facias tibi sculptam similitudinem eorum, which he has formed with you,quæ fieri Dominus prohibuit:and lest you make for yourselves a graven likeness of those things which the Lord has prohibited to be made.

quia Dominus Deus tuus ignis consumens est,For the Lord your God is a consuming fire,Deus æmulator.a jealous God.

Si genueritis filiosWhen you will have conceived sons and grandsons while abiding in the land,ac nepotes, and if,et morati fueritis in terra, having been deceived, deceptique feceritis vobis aliquam similitudinem, you make for yourselves any likeness, patrantes malum coram Domino Deo vestro, accomplishing evil in the sight of the Lord your God,ut eum ad iracundiam provocetis:so as to provoke him to wrath,

testes invoco hodie cælum et terram,I call heaven and earth as witnesses this day, cito perituros vos esse de terra, that you shall quickly perish from the land, which, quam transito Jordane possessuri estis:when you have crossed over the Jordan, you will possess.non habitabitis in ea longo tempore,You will not live in it for a long time; instead, sed delebit vos Dominus, the Lord will destroy you.

atque disperget in omnes gentes,And he will scatter you among all the nations,et remanebitis pauci in nationibus, and few of you will remain among those nations,ad quas vos ducturus est Dominus.to which the Lord will lead you.

Ibique servietis diis,And there, qui hominum manu fabricati sunt, you will serve gods which were fabricated by the hands of men:lignogods of wood and of stone,et lapidi qui non vident, who neither see,nec audiunt, nor hear, nec comedunt, nor eat,nec odorantur.nor smell.

Cumque quæsieris ibi Dominum Deum tuum,And when you will seek the Lord your God in that place, invenies eum:you shall find him,si tamen toto corde quæsieris,if only you seek him with all your heart,et tota tribulatione animæ tuæ.and in all the tribulation of your soul.

Postquam te invenerint omnia quæ prædicta sunt,After all these things which have been foretold have found you, novissimo tempore reverteris ad Dominum Deum tuum,in the end time, you shall return to the Lord your God,et audies vocem ejus.and you will hear his voice.

Quia Deus misericors Dominus Deus tuus est:For the Lord your God is a merciful God.non dimittet te,He will not abandon you,nec omnino delebit, nor will he entirely destroy you, neque obliviscetur pacti, nor will he forget the covenant,in quo juravit patribus tuis.which he swore to your fathers.

Interroga de diebus antiquis,Inquire concerning the days of antiquity, qui fuerunt ante te ex die quo creavit Deus hominem super terram, which were before you, from the day when God created man upon the earth,a summo cælo usque ad summum ejus, from one end of heaven to another,si facta est aliquando hujuscemodi res, aut umquam cognitum est,if anything similar has ever occurred, or whether any such thing has ever been known,

ut audiret populus vocem Dei loquentis de medio ignis, that a people would hear the voice of God, speaking from the midst of fire, sicut tu audisti, et vixisti:just as you have heard it, and live,

si fecit Deus ut ingrederetur, whether God has acted so as to enter and take for himself a nation from the midst of the nations,et tolleret sibi gentem de medio nationum,by means of tests, per tentationes, signs, signaand wonders, atque portenta,by means of fighting, per pugnamand a strong hand,et robustam manum, and an outstretched arm, extentumque brachium, and terrible visions,et horribiles visiones juxta omnia quæ fecit pro vobis Dominus Deus vester in Ægypto,in accord with all the things which the Lord your God has accomplished for you in Egypt, videntibus oculis tuis:in the sight of your eyes.

ut scires quoniam Dominus ipse est Deus,So may you know that the Lord himself is God,et non est alius præter eum.and there is no other beside him.

De cælo te fecit audire vocem suam,He has caused you to hear his voice from heaven,ut doceret te,so that he might teach you.et in terra ostendit tibi ignem suum maximum,And he showed you his exceedingly great fire on earth,et audisti verba illius de medio ignis:and you heard his words from the midst of the fire.

quia dilexit patres tuos,For he loved your fathers,et elegit semen eorum post eos.and he chose their offspring after them.Eduxitque te præcedens in virtute sua magna ex Ægypto,And he led you away from Egypt, advancing before you with his great power,

ut deleret nationes maximas et fortiores te in introitu tuo:so as to wipe away, upon your arrival, nations,et introduceret te,very great and stronger than you, daretque tibi terram earum in possessionem, and so as to lead you in, and to present to you their land as a possession, sicut cernis in præsenti die.just as you discern in the present day.

Scito ergo hodie,Therefore,et cogitato in corde tuo quod Dominus ipse sit Deus in cælo sursum, know on this day and consider in your heart, that the Lord himself is God in heaven above,et in terra deorsum, and on earth below,et non sit alius.and there is no other.

Custodi præcepta ejus atque mandata,Keep his precepts and commandments,quæ ego præcipio tibi:which I am teaching to you,ut bene sit tibi,so that it may be well with you,et filiis tuis post te,and with your sons after you,et permaneas multo tempore super terram, and so that you may remain for a long time upon the land, quam Dominus Deus tuus daturus est tibi.which the Lord your God will give to you.”

Tunc separavit Moyses tres civitates trans Jordanem ad orientalem plagam,Then Moses set aside three cities, across the Jordan toward the eastern region,

ut confugiat ad eas qui occiderit nolens proximum suum,so that anyone might flee to these if he has killed his neighbor unwillingly, nec sibi fuerit inimicus ante unum et alterum diem, who was not his enemy a day or two earlier,et ad harum aliquam urbium possit evadere:and so that he would be able to escape to one of these cities:

Bosor in solitudine,Bezer in the wilderness,quæ sita est in terra campestri de tribu Ruben:which is situated in the plains of the tribe of Ruben;et Ramoth in Galaad, and Ramoth in Gilead,quæ est in tribu Gad:which is in the tribe of Gad;et Golan in Basan, and Golan in Bashan,quæ est in tribu Manasse.which is in the tribe of Manasseh.

Ista est lex,This is the law, quam proposuit Moyses coram filiis Israël:which Moses set forth before the sons of Israel.

et hæc testimonia et cæremoniæ atque judicia,And these are the testimonies and ceremonies as well as judgments,quæ locutus est ad filios Israël,which he spoke to the sons of Israel, quando egressi sunt de Ægypto, when they departed from Egypt,

trans Jordanem in valle contra fanum Phogor in terra Sehon regis Amorrhæi,across the Jordan, in the valley opposite the shrine of Peor, in the land of Sihon, qui habitavit in Hesebon, the king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon, quem percussit Moyses.whom Moses struck down. Accordingly,Filii quoque Israël egressi ex Ægyptothe sons of Israel, having departed from Egypt,

possederunt terram ejus, possessed his land, and the land of Og,et terram Og regis Basan, duorum regum Amorrhæorum, the king of Bashan, the land of the two kings of the Amorites, qui erant trans Jordanem ad solis ortum:who were beyond the Jordan, toward the rising of the sun:

ab Aroër,from Aroer,quæ sita est super ripam torrentis Arnon, which is situated above the bank of the torrent Arnon, usque ad montem Sion,as far as Mount Zion, qui est et Hermon, which is also called Hermon,

omnem planitiem trans Jordanem ad orientalem plagam, the entire plain across the Jordan, from its eastern region, usque ad mare solitudinis,as far as the sea of the wilderness,et usque ad radices montis Phasga.and even to the base of Mount Pisgah.
