Abiit itaque Moyses,And so, Moses went out,et locutus est omnia verba hæc ad universum Israël,and he spoke all these words to all of Israel.
et dixit ad eos:And he said to them:Centum viginti annorum sum hodie;“Today, I am one hundred and twenty years old.non possum ultra egredi et ingredi,I am no longer able to go out and return,præsertim cum et Dominus dixerit mihi:especially since the Lord has also said to me,Non transibis Jordanem istum.‘You shall not cross this Jordan.’
Dominus ergo Deus tuus transibit ante te:Therefore, the Lord your God will go across before you.ipse delebit omnes gentes has in conspectu tuo,He himself will abolish all these nations in your sight,et possidebis eas:and you shall possess them.et Josue iste transibit ante te,And this man Joshua shall go across before you, sicut locutus est Dominus.just as the Lord has spoken.
Facietque Dominus eis sicut fecit SehonAnd the Lord will do to them just as he did to Sihon and Og,et Og regibus Amorrhæorum, the kings of the Amorites,et terræ eorum, and to their land, delebitque eos.and he will wipe them away.
Cum ergoTherefore,et hos tradiderit vobis, when the Lord will have delivered these to you also, similiter facietis eis,you shall act similarly toward them, sicut præcepi vobis.just as I have instructed you.
Viriliter agite,Act manfullyet confortamini:and be strengthened.nolite timere,Do not be afraid, nec paveatis ad conspectum eorum:and do not dread at the sight of them.quia Dominus Deus tuus ipse est ductor tuus,For the Lord your God himself is your commander,et non dimittet, and he will neither dismissnec derelinquet te.nor abandon you.”
Vocavitque Moyses Josue,And Moses called Joshua,et dixit ei coram omni Israël:and,Confortare, before all of Israel,et esto robustus:he said to him:tu enim introduces populum istum in terram,‘Be strong and valiant.quam daturum se patribus eorum juravit Dominus,For you shall lead this people into the land which the Lord swore that he would give to their fathers,et tu eam sorte divides.and you shall divide it by lot.
Et Dominus qui ductor est vester,And the Lord, ipse erit tecum:who is your commander, non dimittet, will himself be with you.nec derelinquet te:He will neither renounce nor abandon you.noli timere,Do not be afraid, nec paveas.and do not dread.”
Scripsit itaque Moyses legem hanc,And so, Moses wrote this law,et tradidit eam sacerdotibus filiis Levi, and he handed it to the priests, the sons of Levi, qui portabant arcam fœderis Domini, who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord,et cunctis senioribus Israël.and to all the elders of Israel.
Præcepitque eis,And he instructed them, dicens:saying:Post septem annos,“After seven years, anno remissionis,in the year of remission,in solemnitate tabernaculorum,at the solemnity of the Feast of Tabernacles,
convenientibus cunctis ex Israël,when all of Israel has convened in order to appear in the sight of the Lord your God,ut appareant in conspectu Domini Dei tui in loco quem elegerit Dominus,in the place which the Lord will choose, leges verba legis hujus coram omni Israël,you shall read the words of this law before all of Israel, audientibus eis,in their hearing.
et in unum omni populo congregato,And when the people have gathered together, tam viris quam mulieribus, parvulis, men as well as women and little children,et advenis, qui sunt intra portas tuas:and the new arrivals who are within your gates,ut audientes discant, et timeant Dominum Deum vestrum, they shall listen so that they may learn, and may fear the Lord your God,et custodiant, impleantque omnes sermones legis hujus.and may keep and fulfill all the words of this law,
Filii quoque eorum qui nunc ignorant, and also so that their sons, who are now ignorant,ut audire possint, may be able to listen,et timeant Dominum Deum suum cunctis diebus quibus versantur in terra, ad quam vos,and may fear the Lord their God all the days that they live in the land to which you will travel,Jordane transmisso, pergitis obtinendam.crossing the Jordan in order to obtain it.”
Et ait Dominus ad Moysen:And the Lord said to Moses:Ecce prope sunt dies mortis tuæ:“Behold, voca Josue, the days of your death draw near.et state in tabernaculo testimonii,Call Joshua,ut præcipiam ei.and stand in the tabernacle of the testimony,Abierunt ergo Moysesso that I may instruct him.”et Josue,Therefore,et steterunt in tabernaculo testimonii:Moses and Joshua went and stood in the tabernacle of the testimony.
apparuitque Dominus ibi in columna nubis,And the Lord appeared there, in a pillar of cloud,quæ stetit in introitu tabernaculi.which stood at the entrance of the tabernacle.
Dixitque Dominus ad Moysen:And the Lord said to Moses: “Behold,Ecce tu dormies cum patribus tuis, you shall sleep with your fathers,et populus iste consurgens fornicabitur post deos alienos in terra, ad quam ingreditur ut habitet in ea:and this people will rise up and will fornicate after foreign gods, in the land which they will enter so that they may live in it.ibi derelinquet me,In that place, they will forsake me,et irritum faciet fœdus, quod pepigi cum eo.and they will make void the covenant that I have formed with them.
Et irascetur furor meus contra eum in die illo:And my fury will be enraged against them in that day.et derelinquam eum,And I will abandon them,et abscondam faciem meam ab eo,and I will hide my face from them,et erit in devorationem:and they shall be devoured.invenient eum omnia mala et afflictiones,Every evil and affliction will find them, ita ut dicat in illo die:so much so that they will say in that day:Vere quia non est Deus mecum,‘Truly, invenerunt me hæc mala.it is because God is not with me that these evils have found me.’
Ego autem abscondam,But I will hide myself,et celabo faciem meam in die illo propter omnia mala, and I will conceal my face in that day,quæ fecit, because of all the evils that they have done, quia secutus est deos alienos.because they have followed strange gods.
Nunc itaque scribite vobis canticum istud,And so, write this canticle now, and teach it to the sons of Israel,et docete filios Israël:so that they may retain it in memory,ut memoriter teneant, and may chant it by mouth,et ore decantent, et sit mihi carmen istud pro testimonio inter filios Israël.and so that this verse may be a testimony to me among the sons of Israel.
Introducam enim eum in terram,For I will lead them into the land, pro qua juravi patribus ejus, about which I swore to their fathers, lacte et melle manantem.a land flowing with milk and honey.Cumque comederint,And when they have eaten,et saturati, crassique fuerint, and have been satiated and fattened, avertentur ad deos alienos, they will turn aside to foreign gods,et servient eis:and they will serve them.detrahentque mihi,And they will disparage me,et irritum facient pactum meum.and they will nullify my covenant.
Postquam invenerint eum mala multa et afflictiones,And after many evils and afflictions have overwhelmed them, respondebit ei canticum istud pro testimonio, this canticle will answer them as a testimony;quod nulla delebit oblivio ex ore seminis sui.it shall never pass into oblivion, away from the mouths of their offspring.Scio enim cogitationes ejus, quæ facturus sit hodie,For I know their thoughts and what they are about to do today, antequam introducam eum in terram, quam ei pollicitus sum.even before I lead them into the land which I have promised to them.”
Scripsit ergo Moyses canticum,Therefore, Moses wrote the canticle,et docuit filios Israël.and he taught it to the sons of Israel.
Præcepitque Dominus Josue filio Nun,And the Lord instructed Joshua,et ait:the son of Nun,Confortare, and he said:et esto robustus:“Be strongtu enim introduces filios Israël in terram, and valiant.quam pollicitus sum,For you shall lead the sons of Israel into the land which I have promised,et ego ero tecum.and I will be with you.”
Postquam ergo scripsit Moyses verba legis hujus in volumine,Therefore, after Moses had written the words of this law in a volume, atque complevit, and had finished it,
præcepit Levitis,he instructed the Levites, qui portabant arcam fœderis Domini, who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord, dicens:saying:
Tollite librum istum,“Take this book,et ponite eum in latere arcæ fœderis Domini Dei vestri:and place it inside the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God,ut sit ibi contra te in testimonium.so that it may be there as a testimony against you.
Ego enim scio contentionem tuam, et cervicem tuam durissimam. For I know your contentiousness and your very stiff neck.Adhuc vivente me et ingrediente vobiscum,Even while I am still living and entering with you, semper contentiose egistis contra Dominum:you have always acted with contention against the Lord.quanto magis cum mortuus fuero? How much more so when I will be dead?
Congregate ad me omnes majores natu per tribus vestras,Gather to me all those greater by birth throughout your tribes, atque doctores,as well as your teachers,et loquar audientibus eis sermones istos, and I will speak these words in their hearing,et invocabo contra eos cælum et terram.and I will call heaven and earth as witnesses against them.
Novi enim quod post mortem meam inique agetis,For I know that, after my death, you will act with iniquity,et declinabitis cito de via, quam præcepi vobis:and you will quickly depart from the way that I have instructed to you.et occurrent vobis mala in extremo tempore,And so, evils will meet you in the end time, quando feceritis malum in conspectu Domini, ut irritetis eum per opera manuum vestrarum.when you will have done evil in the sight of the Lord so as to provoke him through the works of your hands.”
Locutus est ergo Moyses,Thus did Moses speak, audiente universo cœtu Israël,in the hearing of the entire assembly of Israel, verba carminis hujus, the words of this canticle,et ad finem usque complevit.and he completed it to its very end.
