Audite,“Listen,cæli,O heavens,quæ loquor:to what I am saying.audiat terra verba oris mei.Let the earth hear the words of my mouth.

Concrescat ut pluvia doctrina mea,Let my doctrine accumulate like the rain.fluat ut ros eloquium meum,Let my eloquence form like the dew, quasi imber super herbam, like a mist upon the plants,et quasi stillæ super gramina.and like water droplets upon the grass.

Quia nomen Domini invocabo:For I will invoke the name of the Lord.date magnificentiam Deo nostro.Acknowledge the magnificence of our God!

Dei perfecta sunt opera,The works of God are perfect,et omnes viæ ejus judicia:and all his ways are judgments.Deus fidelis, et absque ulla iniquitate,God is faithful and without any iniquity.justus et rectus. He is just and upright.

Peccaverunt ei,They have sinned against him,et non filii ejus in sordibus:and in their filth they are not his sons.generatio prava atque perversa. They are a depraved and perverse generation.

Hæccine reddis Domino,How can this be the return you would offer to the Lord, popule stulte et insipiens?O foolish and senseless people?numquid non ipse est pater tuus,Is he himself not your Father, qui possedit te,who has possessed you,et fecit, and made you,et creavit te?and created you?

Memento dierum antiquorum,Remember the days of antiquity.cogita generationes singulas:Consider each generation.interroga patrem tuum,Question your father,et annuntiabit tibi:and he will declare it to you.majores tuos,Question your elders,et dicent tibi.and they will tell it to you.

Quando dividebat Altissimus gentes,When the Most High divided the nations, quando separabat filios Adam, when he separated the sons of Adam, constituit terminos populorum juxta numerum filiorum Israël.he appointed the limits of the peoples according to the number of the sons of Israel.

Pars autem Domini,But the Lord’s portion is his people:populus ejus:Jacob,Jacob funiculus hæreditatis ejus.the lot of his inheritance.

Invenit eum in terra deserta,He discovered him in a desert land,in loco horroris,in a place of horroret vastæ solitudinis:and a vast wilderness.circumduxit eum,He led him aroundet docuit:and taught him,et custodivit quasi pupillam oculi sui.and he guarded him like the pupil of his eye,

Sicut aquila provocans ad volandum pullos suos, just as an eagle encourages its young to fly,et super eos volitans, and, flying above them, expandit alas suas, stretches out its wings,et assumpsit eum,and takes them up,atque portavit in humeris suis.and carries them on its shoulders.

Dominus solus dux ejus fuit,The Lord alone was his leader,et non erat cum eo deus alienus:and there was no strange god with him.

constituit eum super excelsam terram,He stood him upon an exalted land,ut comederet fructus agrorum:so that he might eat the fruits of the fields,ut sugeret mel de petra,so that he might eat honey from the rock, oleumque de saxo durissimo;and oil from the hardest stone,

butyrum de armento, butter from the herd,et lac de ovibus cum adipe agnorum, and milk from the sheep, with fat from the lambs,et arietum filiorum Basan: et hircos cum medulla tritici, and with rams and goats from the sons of Bashan, with the kernel of the wheat,et sanguinem uvæ biberet meracissimum.and so that he might drink the undiluted blood of the grape.

Incrassatus est dilectus,The beloved grew fat,et recalcitravit:and he kicked.incrassatus,Having grown fat and thick and wide, impinguatus,he abandoned God,dilatatus, his Maker, dereliquit Deum factorem suum, and he withdrew from God,et recessit a Deo salutari suo.his Savior.

Provocaverunt eum in diis alienis,They provoked him with strange gods,et in abominationibus ad iracundiam concitaverunt.and they stirred him to anger by their abominations.

Immolaverunt dæmoniis et non Deo,They immolated to demons and not to God,diis quos ignorabant:to gods whom they did not know, novi recentesque venerunt, who were new and recent arrivals, quos non coluerunt patres eorum:whom their fathers did not worship.

Deum qui te genuit dereliquisti,You have forsaken the God who conceived you,et oblitus es Domini creatoris tui.and you have forgotten the Lord who created you.

Vidit Dominus,The Lord saw,et ad iracundiam concitatus est:and he was stirred to anger.quia provocaverunt eum filii sui et filiæ.For his own sons and daughters provoked him.

Et ait:And he said:Abscondam faciem meam ab eis,‘I will hide my face from them,et considerabo novissima eorum:and I will consider their very end.generatio enim perversa est,For this is a perverse generation,et infideles filii.and they are unfaithful sons.

Ipsi me provocaverunt in eo qui non erat Deus,They have provoked me with that which was not God,et irritaverunt in vanitatibus suis:and they have angered me with their emptiness.et ego provocabo eos in eo qui non est populus,And so, I will provoke them with that which is not a people,et in gente stulta irritabo illos.and I will anger them with a foolish nation.

Ignis succensus est in furore meo,A fire has been kindled in my fury,et ardebit usque ad inferni novissima:and it will burn even to the deepest Hell, devorabitque terram cum germine suo,and it will devour the earth with its produce,et montium fundamenta comburet.and it will burn the foundations of the mountains.

Congregabo super eos mala,I will heap evils upon them,et sagittas meas complebo in eis.and I will expend my arrows among them.

Consumentur fame,They will be consumed by famine,et devorabunt eos aves morsu amarissimo:and birds with a very bitter bite will devour them.dentes bestiarum immittam in eos,I will send forth the teeth of wild beasts among them, cum furore trahentium super terram, along with the fury of creatures that scurry across the ground, atque serpentium.and of serpents.

Foris vastabit eos gladius,Outside, the sword will devastate them; and inside,et intus pavor, there will be dread, juvenem simul ac virginem,as much for the young man as for the maiden, lactentem cum homine sene.and as much for the newborn as for the old man.

Dixi:I said:Ubinam sunt?Where are they?cessare faciam ex hominibus memoriam eorum.I will cause their memory to cease from among men.

Sed propter iram inimicorum distuli:But because of the wrath of the enemies, I have delayed it.ne forte superbirent hostes eorum, et dicerent:Otherwise, perhaps their enemies would be arrogant and would say:Manus nostra excelsa,“Our exalted hand,et non Dominus, fecit hæc omnia.and not the Lord, has done all these things.”

Gens absque consilio est,They are a nation without counselet sine prudentia.and without prudence.

Utinam saperent,I wish that they would be wiseet intelligerent, and understanding,ac novissima providerent.and would provide for the very end.’

Quomodo persequatur unus mille,How is it that one pursues a thousand,et duo fugent decem millia?and two chases ten thousand?nonne ideo, quia Deus suus vendidit eos,Is it not because their God has sold them,et Dominus conclusit illos?and because the Lord has enclosed them?

Non enim est Deus noster ut dii eorum:For our God is not like their gods.et inimici nostri sunt judices. And our enemies are judges.

De vinea Sodomorum, vinea eorum,Their vines are of the vines of Sodom,et de suburbanis Gomorrhæ:but from the suburbs of Gomorrah.uva eorum, uva fellis,Their grapes are the grapes of gall,et botri amarissimi.and their grape clusters are most bitter.

Fel draconum vinum eorum,Their wine is the gall of snakes,et venenum aspidum insanabile.and it is the incurable venom of asps.

Nonne hæc condita sunt apud me,‘Have not these things been stored up with me,et signata in thesauris meis?and sealed up amid my treasures?

Mea est ultio,Vengeance is mine,et ego retribuam in tempore, and I will repay them in due time,ut labatur pes eorum:so that their foot may slip and fall.juxta est dies perditionis,The day of perdition is near,et adesse festinant tempora.and the time rushes to appear.’

Judicabit Dominus populum suum,The Lord will judge his people,et in servis suis miserebitur:and he will take pity on his servants.videbit quod infirmata sit manus,He will see that their hand has been weakened,et clausi quoque defecerunt, and that those who have been enclosed have likewise failed, residuique consumpti sunt.and that those who have been left behind have been consumed.

Et dicet:And he shall say:Ubi sunt dii eorum,‘Where are their gods,in quibus habebant fiduciam?in whom they had confidence?

de quorum victimis comedebant adipes,They ate the fat of their victims,et bibebant vinum libaminum:and they drank the wine of their libations.surgant,So let these rise up,et opitulentur vobis, and bring relief to you,et in necessitate vos protegant.and protect you in your distress.

Videte quod ego sim solus,See that I am alone,et non sit alius deus præter me:and there is no other god beside me.ego occidam,I will kill,et ego vivere faciam:and I will cause to live.percutiam,I will strike,et ego sanabo, and I will heal.et non est qui de manu mea possit eruere. And there is no one who is able to rescue from my hand.

Levabo ad cælum manum meam,I will lift up my hand to heaven,et dicam:and I will say:Vivo ego in æternum.I live in eternity.

Si acuero ut fulgur gladium meum,When I sharpen my sword like lightning,et arripuerit judicium manus mea:and my hand takes hold of judgment, reddam ultionem hostibus meis, then I will render vengeance to my enemies,et his qui oderunt me retribuam.and I will repay those who hate me.

Inebriabo sagittas meas sanguine,I will inebriate my arrows with blood,et gladius meus devorabit carnes;and my sword will devour flesh:de cruore occisorum et de captivitate, from the blood of the slain and from the captive, nudati inimicorum capitis.from the exposed head of the enemies.’

Laudate,You nations, gentes, populum ejus, praise his people!quia sanguinem servorum suorum ulciscetur:For he will avenge the blood of his servants.et vindictam retribuet in hostes eorum,And he will distribute vengeance to their enemies.et propitius erit terræ populi sui.And he will be merciful to the land of his people.”

Venit ergo Moyses,Therefore,et locutus est omnia verba cantici hujus in auribus populi,Moses went and spoke all the words of this canticle to the ears of the people, ipseboth he and Joshua,et Josue filius Nun.the son of Nun.

Complevitque omnes sermones istos,And he completed all these words, loquens ad universum Israël,speaking to all of Israel.

et dixit ad eos:And he said to them:Ponite corda vestra in omnia verba,“Set your hearts upon all the words which I am testifying to you this day.quæ ego testificor vobis hodie:So shall you command your sons,ut mandetis ea filiis vestris custodireto keep,et facere, and to do,et implere universa quæ scripta sunt legis hujus:and to fulfill all the things that have been written in this law.

quia non incassum præcepta sunt vobis,For these things have not been entrusted to you to no purpose, sed ut singuli in eis viverent:but so that each one would live by them,quæ facientes longo perseveretis tempore in terra, and so that,ad quam,in doing these,Jordane transmisso, you may continue for a long time in the land, ingredimini possidendam.which you will enter upon crossing the Jordan in order to possess it.”

Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen in eadem die,And the Lord spoke to Moses on the same day, dicens:saying:

Ascende in montem istum Abarim,“Ascend this mountain, Abarim,id est,(that is,transitum, in montem Nebo,of crossings) onto Mount Nebo, qui est in terra Moab contra Jericho:which is in the land of Moab, opposite Jericho,et vide terram Chanaan, and look upon the land of Canaan, quam ego tradam filiis Israël obtinendam, which I will deliver to the sons of Israel to obtain it.et morere in monte. And you shall die upon the mountain.

Quem conscendens jungeris populis tuis,After climbing it, you will be joined to your people, sicut mortuus est Aaron frater tuus in monte Hor,just as your brother Aaron died on Mount Hor,et appositus populis suis:and was placed with his people.

quia prævaricati estis contra me in medio filiorum Israël ad aquas contradictionis in Cades deserti Sin:For you trespassed against me in the midst of the sons of Israel, at the Waters of Contradiction, in Kadesh,et non sanctificastis me inter filios Israël.in the desert of Sin. And you did not sanctify me among the sons of Israel.

E contra videbis terram,You shall see the land opposite you,et non ingredieris in eam, which I will give to the sons of Israel, quam ego dabo filiis Israël.but you shall not enter into it.”
