Vocavitque Moyses omnem Israëlem,And Moses summoned all of Israel,et dixit ad eum:and he said to them:Audi,“Listen,Israël,O Israel,cæremonias atque judicia,to the ceremonies and judgments,quæ ego loquor in auribus vestris hodie:which I am speaking to your ears on this day.discite ea,Learn them,et opere complete.and fulfill them in deed.

Dominus Deus noster pepigit nobiscum fœdus in Horeb. The Lord our God formed a covenant with us at Horeb.

Non cum patribus nostris iniit pactum,He did not make the covenant with our fathers, sed nobiscum qui in præsentiarum sumus, but with us,et vivimus.who are alive and in the present time.

Facie ad faciem locutus est nobis in monte de medio ignis. He spoke to us face to face on the mountain, from the midst of fire.

Ego sequesterI was the mediator,et medius fui inter Dominumfor I was in the middle between the Lord and you,et vos in tempore illo,at that time,ut annuntiarem vobis verba ejus:to announce his words to you.timuistis enim ignem,For you were afraid of the fire,et non ascendistis in montem.and so you did not ascend to the mountain.Et ait:And he said:

Ego Dominus Deus tuus,‘I am the Lord your God,qui eduxi te de terra Ægypti, who led you away from the land of Egypt,de domo servitutis.from the house of servitude.

Non habebis deos alienos in conspectu meo.You shall not have strange gods in my sight.

Non facies tibi sculptile,You shall not make for yourself a graven image, nec similitudinem omnium, nor the likeness of anything,quæ in cælo sunt desuper, which is in heaven above,et quæ in terra deorsum,or on earth below,et quæ versantur in aquis sub terra.or which abides in the waters under the earth.

Non adorabis ea, et non coles. You shall not adore and you shall not worship these things.Ego enim sum Dominus Deus tuus:For I am the Lord your God,Deus æmulator,a jealous God,reddens iniquitatem patrum super filios in tertiam et quartam generationem his qui oderunt me:repaying the iniquity of the fathers upon the sons to the third and fourth generation to those who hate me,

et faciens misericordiam in multa millia diligentibus me,and acting with mercy in thousands of ways to those who love meet custodientibus præcepta mea.and keep my precepts.

Non usurpabis nomen Domini Dei tui frustra:You shall not use the name of the Lord your God in vain.quia non erit impunitus qui super re vana nomen ejus assumpserit. For he will not go unpunished who takes up his name over an unimportant matter.

Observa diem sabbati,Observe the day of the Sabbath,ut sanctifices eum,so that you may sanctify it,sicut præcepit tibi Dominus Deus tuus.just as the Lord your God has instructed you.

Sex diebus operaberis,For six days,et facies omnia opera tua.you shall labor and do all your work.

Septimus dies sabbati est,The seventh is the day of the Sabbath,id est, that is,requies Domini Dei tui.the rest of the Lord your God.Non facies in eo quidquam operis tu,You shall not do any work in it,et filius tuus, nor shall your son,et filia, nor daughter, servus et ancilla, nor man servant,et bos,nor woman servant,et asinus, nor ox,et omne jumentum tuum, nor donkey,et peregrinus qui est intra portas tuas:nor any of your cattle,ut requiescat servus tuus, nor the sojourner who is within your gates,et ancilla tua,so that your men and woman servants may rest, sicut et tu.just as you do.

Memento quod et ipse servieris in Ægypto,Remember that you also were servants in Egypt,et eduxerit te inde Dominus Deus tuus in manu forti, and the Lord your God led you away from that place with a strong hand and an outstretched arm.et brachio extento.Because of this,Idcirco præcepit tibi ut observares diem sabbati.he has instructed you so that you would observe the Sabbath day.

Honora patrem tuum et matrem,Honor your father and mother, sicut præcepit tibi Dominus Deus tuus, just as the Lord your God has instructed you,ut longo vivas tempore,so that you may live a long time,et bene sit tibi in terra, and so that it may be well with you in the land, quam Dominus Deus tuus daturus est tibi.which the Lord your God will give to you.

Non occides,You shall not murder.

neque mœchaberis,And you shall not commit adultery.

furtumque non facies:And you shall not commit theft.

nec loqueris contra proximum tuum falsum testimonium.Neither shall you speak false testimony against your neighbor.

Non concupisces uxorem proximi tui:You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, non domum, nor his house, non agrum, nor his field, non servum, nor his man servant, non ancillam, nor his woman servant, non bovem, nor his ox,non asinum, nor his donkey,et universa quæ illius sunt.nor anything out of all that is his.’

Hæc verba locutus est Dominus ad omnem multitudinem vestram in monte de medio ignis et nubis,The Lord spoke these words to the entire multitude of you on the mountain,et caliginis, from the midst of the fire and the cloud and the darkness, voce magna, with a loud voice, nihil addens amplius:adding nothing more.et scripsit ea in duabus tabulis lapideis,And he wrote them on two tablets of stone, quas tradidit mihi.which he delivered to me.

Vos autem postquam audistis vocem de medio tenebrarum,Then, after you heard the voice from the midst of the darkness,et montem ardere vidistis, and you saw the mountain burning, accessistis ad me omnes principes tribuum et majores natu, you approached me, all you leaders of the tribes and those greater by birth.atque dixistis:And you said:

Ecce ostendit nobis Dominus Deus noster majestatem‘Behold,et magnitudinem suam:the Lord our God has revealed to us his majesty and his greatness.vocem ejus audivimus de medio ignis,We have heard his voice from the midst of fire,et probavimus hodie, and we have proven today that, quod loquente Deo cum homine, though God is speaking with man, vixerit homo.man has lived.

Cur ergo moriemur,Therefore, why should we die,et devorabit nos ignis hic maximus?and why should this very great fire devour us?si enim audierimus ultra vocem Domini Dei nostri,For if we hear the voice of the Lord our God any longer, moriemur.we will die.

Quid est omnis caro, ut audiat vocem Dei viventis,What is all flesh, that it would hear the voice of the living God,qui de medio ignis loquitur sicut nos audivimus, who speaks from the midst of fire, just as we have heard it,et possit vivere?and be able to live?

Tu magis accede:Instead,et audi cuncta quæ dixerit Dominus Deus noster tibi:you should approach and listen to all the things that the Lord our God will say to you.loquerisque ad nos,And you will speak to us,et nos audientes faciemus ea.and we will listen and do these things.’

Quod cum audisset Dominus,But when the Lord had heard this, ait ad me:he said to me:Audivi vocem verborum populi hujus quæ locuti sunt tibi:‘I have heard the voice of the words of this people, which they spoke to you.bene omnia sunt locuti. All this, they have spoken well.

Quis det talem eos habere mentem,Who will grant to them to have such a mind,ut timeant me,so that they may fear me,et custodiant universa mandata mea in omni tempore, and may keep all my commandments at all times,ut bene sit eis et filiis eorum in sempiternum?so that it may be well with them and with their sons forever?

Vade et dic eis:Go and say to them:Revertimini in tentoria vestra.Return to your tents.

Tu vero hic sta mecum,But as for you, stand here with me,et loquar tibi omnia mandata mea, et cæremonias atque judicia:and I will speak to you all my commandments and ceremonies, as well as judgments.quæ docebis eos,These, you shall teach them,ut faciant ea in terra,so that they may do them in the land, quam dabo illis in possessionem.which I will give to them as a possession.

Custodite igiturAnd so,et facite quæ præcepit Dominus Deus vobis:keep and do the things which the Lord God has commanded you.non declinabitisYou shall not turn aside, neque ad dexteram, neither to the right, neque ad sinistram:nor to the left.

sed per viam, quam præcepit Dominus Deus vester,For you shall walk in the way that the Lord your God has instructed, ambulabitis, ut vivatis,so that you may live,et bene sit vobis, and it may be well with you,et protelentur dies in terra possessionis vestræ.and your days may be extended in the land of your possession.’”
