Fortis in bello Jesus Nave,Joshua, the son of Nun, was valiant in warfare;successor Moysi in prophetis, qui fuit magnus secundum nomen suum,he was the successor of Moses among the prophets. He was great in accord with his name,

maximus in salutem electorum Dei,very great in saving the elect of God.expugnare insurgentes hostes,He fought against the insurgent enemies,ut consequeretur hæreditatem Israël.so that he might obtain the inheritance for Israel.

Quam gloriam adeptus est in tollendo manus suas,What great glory he secured,et jactando contra civitates rhomphæas!by lifting up his hands and throwing his spears against the cities!

Quis ante illum sic restitit?Who before him has stood so firmly?nam hostes ipse Dominus perduxit. For the Lord himself led forward the enemies.

An non in iracundia ejus impeditus est sol,Was not the sun halted by his wrath,et una dies facta est quasi duo?and one day made as if two?

Invocavit Altissimum potentem,He called upon the Most High Power,in oppugnando inimicos undique:when the enemies assailed him on every side.et audivit illum magnus et sanctus Deus,And the greatin saxis grandinis virtutis valde fortis.and holy God answered him with hailstones of exceedingly great force.

Impetum fecit contra gentem hostilem,He made a violent assault against a hostile nation,et in descensu perdidit contrarios:and at his descent, he destroyed his adversaries,

ut cognoscant gentes potentiam ejus,so that the nations would acknowledge his power:quia contra Deum pugnare non est facile.that it is not easy to fight against God.Et secutus est a tergo potentis:And he followed the Almighty.

et in diebus Moysi misericordiam fecit, ipse,And in the days of Moses, he accomplished a work of mercy.et Caleb filius Jephone,He and Caleb, the son of Jephuneh, stare contra hostem, stood against the enemy,et prohibere gentem a peccatis, and forbid the people from sin,et perfringere murmur malitiæ.and broke their wicked murmuring.

Et ipsi duo constituti a periculo liberati sunt a numero sexcentorum millium peditum, inducere illos in hæreditatem, in terram quæ manat lac et mel.And these two, having been appointed, were freed from peril, from foot soldiers numbering six hundred thousand, so as to lead them into their inheritance, into a land flowing with milk and honey.

Et dedit Dominus ipsi Caleb fortitudinem,And the Lord gave strength to Caleb also,et usque in senectutem permansit illi virtus, and his strength remained even in his old age,ut ascenderet in excelsum terræ locum,so that he ascended to the high places of the land,et semen ipsius obtinuit hæreditatem, and his offspring obtained it as an inheritance.

ut viderent omnes filii Israël quia bonum est obsequi sancto Deo.This was so that all the sons of Israel would see that it is good to obey the holy God.

Et judices singuli suo nomine,Then there were the judges, each one called by name, quorum non est corruptum cor, whose heart was not corrupted.qui non aversi sunt a Domino,They did not turn away from the Lord,

ut sit memoria illorum in benedictione,so that their memory might be blessed,et ossa eorum pullulent de loco suo:and their bones might spring forth from their place,

et nomen eorum permaneat in æternum, and their name might remain forever, permanens ad filios illorum, continuing in their sons, sanctorum virorum gloria.holy men of glory.

Dilectus a Domino Deo suo Samuel,Samuel, prophet of the Lord, propheta Domini, beloved by the Lord his God,renovavit imperium, established a new government,et unxit principes in gente sua.and he anointed leaders over his people.

In lege Domini congregationem judicavit,By the law of the Lord, he judged the congregation,et vidit Deus Jacob:and the God of Jacob saw it,et in fide sua probatus est propheta, and so, by his fidelity, he was proven to be a prophet.

et cognitus est in verbis suis fidelis,And he was known to be faithful in his words.quia vidit Deum lucis. For he saw the God of light.

Et invocavit Dominum omnipotentem,And when fighting against the enemies,in oppugnando hostes circumstantes undique, who stood against him on every side, he called upon the name of the Almighty Lord,in oblatione agni inviolati.with an offering of an inviolate lamb.

Et intonuit de cælo Dominus,And the Lord thundered from heaven,et in sonitu magno auditam fecit vocem suam:and with a great noise, he made his voice to be heard.

et contrivit principes Tyriorum,And he crushed the leaders of the Tyrians,et omnes duces Philisthiim:and all the commanders of the Philistines.

et ante tempus finis vitæ suæ et sæculi,And before the time of the end of his life in the world, testimonium præbuit in conspectu Domini et christi:he offered testimony in the sight of the Lord and of his Christ, pecunias et usque ad calceamenta ab omni carne non accepit, that he had not taken a bribe from any flesh, not even so much as a shoe,et non accusavit illum homo.and that no man made an accusation against him.

Et post hoc dormivit:And after this,et notum fecit regi,he slept.et ostendit illi finem vitæ suæ:And he made known to the king and revealed to him the end of his life.et exaltavit vocem suam de terra in prophetia,And he lifted up his voice from the earth in prophecy, delere impietatem gentis.to abolish the impiety of the people.
