Postquam autem hæc completa sunt,Then,accesserunt ad me principes,after these things were completed,dicentes:the leaders came to me,Non est separatus populus Israël,saying:sacerdotes“The people of Israel,et Levitæ,the priests,a populis terrarumand the Levites,et abominationibus eorum:have not been separated from the peoples of the lands and from their abominations,Chananæi videlicet,especially those of the Canaanites,et Hethæi,and Hittites,et Pherezæi,and Perizzites,et Jebusæi,and Jebusites,et Ammonitarum,and Ammonites,et Moabitarum,and Moabites,et Ægyptiorum,and Egyptians,et Amorrhæorum:and Amorites.
tulerunt enim de filiabus eorum sibi et filiis suis,For they have taken from their daughters for themselves and for their sons,et commiscuerunt semen sanctum cum populis terrarum:and they have mixed a holy lineage with the peoples of the lands.manus etiam principum et magistratuum fuit in transgressione hac prima. And even the hand of the leaders and the magistrates has been first in this transgression.”
Cumque audissem sermonem istum,And when I had heard this word, scidi pallium meum et tunicam,I tore my cloak and my tunic,et evelli capillos capitis mei et barbæ,and I pulled out the hairs of my head and beard,et sedi mœrens.and I sat in mourning.
Convenerunt autem ad me omnes qui timebant verbum Dei Israël,Then all those who feared the word of the God of Israel gathered to me,pro transgressione eorum qui de captivitate venerant, because of the transgression of those who had arrived from the captivity.et ego sedebam tristis usque ad sacrificium vespertinum:And I sat in sorrow, until the evening sacrifice.
et in sacrificio vespertino,And at the evening sacrifice, surrexi de afflictione mea,I rose up from my affliction, and,et scisso pallio et tunica, having torn my cloak and my tunic, curvavi genua mea,I fell to my knees,et expandi manus meas ad Dominum Deum meum.and I reached out my hands to the Lord, my God.
Et dixi:And I said:Deus meus,“My God,confundorI am confounded and ashamed to lift up my face to you.et erubesco levare faciem meam ad te:For our iniquities have been multiplied over our heads, quoniam iniquitates nostræ multiplicatæ sunt super caput nostrum, and our offenses have increased,et delicta nostra creverunt usque ad cælum, even up to heaven,
a diebus patrum nostrorum:from the days of our fathers.sedBut also,et nos ipsi peccavimus graviter usque ad diem hanc,we ourselves have sinned gravely,et in iniquitatibus nostris traditi sumus ipsi, even to this day.et reges nostri,And for our iniquities,et sacerdotes nostri,we ourselves,in manum regum terrarum, and our kings and our priests,et in gladium, have been delivered into the hands of the kings of the lands,et in captivitatem, and to the sword,et in rapinam, and to captivity,et in confusionem vultus, and to plunder, sicutand to confusion of face,et die hac.just as it is also in this day.
Et nunc quasi parum et ad momentum facta est deprecatio nostra apud Dominum Deum nostrum,And now, to a small extent and for a moment, our petition has been made with the Lord our God,ut dimitterentur nobis reliquiæ,so that they may leave us a remnant,et daretur nobis paxillus in loco sancto ejus, and so that a secure place in his holy land may be given to us,et illuminaret oculos nostros Deus noster, and so that our God may illuminate our eyes,et daret nobis vitam modicam in servitute nostra:and may give us a little life in our servitude.
quia servi sumus,For we are servants,et in servitute nostra non dereliquit nos Deus noster, yet in our servitude our God has not forsaken us,sed inclinavit super nos misericordiam coram rege Persarum, but he has inclined mercy upon us in the sight of the king of the Persians,ut daret nobis vitam,so that he may give us life,et sublimaret domum Dei nostri, and may raise up the house of our God,et exstrueret solitudines ejus, and repair its desolations,et daret nobis sepem in Juda et Jerusalem.and give us a hedge in Judah and Jerusalem.
Et nunc quid dicemus,And now,Deus noster, our God,post hæc?what should we say after these things?Quia dereliquimus mandata tua,For we abandoned your commandments,
quæ præcepisti in manu servorum tuorum prophetarum, which you instructed by the hand of your servants, the prophets, dicens: Terra, saying: ‘The land,ad quam vos ingredimini ut possideatis eam, which you shall enter so that you may possess it,terra immunda est juxta immunditiam populorum, ceterarumque terrarum,is an unclean land, due to the uncleanness of the peoples and of the other lands, abominationibus eorum qui repleverunt eam ab ore usque ad os in coinquinatione sua.the abominations of those who have filled it, from mouth to mouth, with their filth.’
Nunc ergo filias vestras ne detis filiis eorum,Now therefore, you should not give your daughters to their sons,et filias eorum ne accipiatis filiis vestris, nor should you receive their daughters for your sons.et non quæratis pacem eorum et prosperitatem eorum usque in æternum:And you should not seek their peace, nor their prosperity, even forever.ut confortemini,So shall you be strengthened,et comedatis quæ bona sunt terræ,and so shall you eat the good things of the land,et hæredes habeatis filios vestros usque in sæculum.and have your sons as your heirs, even for all time.
Et post omnia quæ venerunt super nos in operibus nostris pessimis,And after all that has happened to us because of our very wicked works and our great offense,et in delicto nostro magno, you, quia tu,our God,Deus noster, have freed us from our iniquity, liberasti nos de iniquitate nostra, and you have given us salvation,et dedisti nobis salutem sicut est hodie, just as it is this day,
ut non converteremur,so that we would not turn awayet irrita faceremus mandata tua,and make your commandments void, neque matrimonia jungeremus cum populis abominationum istarum.and so that we would not unite in marriage with the peoples of these abominations.Numquid iratus es nobis usque ad consummationem,Could you be angry with us even to the very end,ne dimitteres nobis reliquias ad salutem?so that you would not leave us a remnant to be saved?
Domine Deus Israël,O Lord, the God of Israel, justus es tu:you are just.quoniam derelicti sumus, qui salvaremur sicut die hac.For we have been left behind to be saved, just as it is this day.Ecce coram te sumus in delicto nostro:Behold, we are before your sight in our offense.non enim stari potest coram te super hoc.And it is not possible to withstand you in this matter.”
