Profectique sunt de Elim,And they set out from Elim.et venit omnis multitudo filiorum Israël in desertum Sin,And the entire multitude of the sons of Israel arrived at the desert of Sin,quod est inter Elim et Sinai, which is between Elim and Sinai, quintodecimo die mensis secundi,on the fifteenth day of the second month, postquam egressi sunt de terra Ægypti.after they departed from the land of Egypt.

Et murmuravit omnis congregatio filiorum Israël contra Moysen et Aaron in solitudine. And the entire congregation of the sons of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness.

Dixeruntque filii Israël ad eos:And the sons of Israel said to them:Utinam mortui essemus per manum Domini in terra Ægypti,“If only we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, quando sedebamus super ollas carnium, when we sat around bowls of meat and ate bread until filled.et comedebamus panem in saturitate:Why have you led us away, cur eduxistis nos in desertum istud, into this desert,ut occideretis omnem multitudinem fame?so that you might kill the entire multitude with famine?”

Dixit autem Dominus ad Moysen:Then the Lord said to Moses:Ecce ego pluam vobis panes de cælo:“Behold, egrediatur populus,I will rain down bread from heaven for you.et colligat quæ sufficiunt per singulos dies:Let the people go out and collect what is sufficient for each day,ut tentem eum utrum ambulet in lege mea,so that I may test them,an non.as to whether or not they will walk in my law.

Die autem sexto parent quod inferant:But on the sixth day, let them prepare what they use for carrying,et sit duplum quam colligere solebant per singulos dies.and let there be double what they were accustomed to collect on a single day.”

Dixeruntque MoysesAnd Moses and Aaron said to the sons of Israel:et Aaron ad omnes filios Israël:“In the evening,Vespere scietis quod Dominus eduxerit vos de terra Ægypti, you will know that the Lord has led you away from the land of Egypt.

et mane videbitis gloriam Domini:And in the morning, you will see the glory of the Lord.audivit enim murmur vestrum contra Dominum:For he has heard your murmuring against the Lord.nos vero quid sumus,But as for us, truly what are we,quia mussitastis contra nos?that you would whisper against us?”

Et ait Moyses:And Moses said:Dabit vobis Dominus vespere carnes edere,“In the evening, the Lord will give you flesh to eat,et mane panes in saturitate:and in the morning, bread in fullness.eo quod audierit murmurationes vestras quibus murmurati estis contra eum:For he has heard your murmurings that you have murmured against him.nos enim quid sumus? For what are we?nec contra nos est murmur vestrum,Your murmuring is not against us,sed contra Dominum.but against the Lord.”

Dixit quoque Moyses ad Aaron:Moses also said to Aaron:Dic universæ congregationi filiorum Israël:“Say to the whole congregation of the sons of Israel,Accedite coram Domino:‘Approach before the Lord.audivit enim murmur vestrum. For he has heard your murmuring.’”

Cumque loqueretur Aaron ad omnem cœtum filiorum Israël,And when Aaron spoke to the entire assembly of the sons of Israel, respexerunt ad solitudinem:they looked out toward the wilderness.et ecce gloria Domini apparuit in nube. And behold, the glory of the Lord appeared in a cloud.

Locutus est autem Dominus ad Moysen,Then the Lord spoke to Moses, dicens:saying:

Audivi murmurationes filiorum Israël.“I have heard the murmuring of the sons of Israel.Loquere ad eos:Say to them: ‘In the evening,Vespere comedetis carnes, you will eat flesh, and in the morning,et mane saturabimini panibus:you will be filled with bread.scietisque quod ego sum Dominus Deus vester. And you shall know that I am the Lord your God.’”

Factum est ergo vespere,Therefore, it happened in the evening:et ascendens coturnix, quails, rising up,cooperuit castra:covered the camp.mane quoque ros jacuit per circuitum castrorum.Likewise, in the morning, a dew lay all around the camp.

Cumque operuisset superficiem terræ,And when it had covered the face of the earth, apparuit in solitudine minutum,it appeared, in the wilderness,et quasi pilo tusum in similitudinem pruinæ super terram.small and as if crushed with a pestle, similar to hoar-frost on the ground.

Quod cum vidissent filii Israël,When the sons of Israel had seen it,dixerunt ad invicem:they said one to another:Manhu?“Manhu?”quod significat: Quid est hoc?which means “What is this?”ignorabant enim quid esset. For they did not know what it was.Quibus ait Moyses:And Moses said to them:Iste est panis quem Dominus dedit vobis ad vescendum.“This is the bread that the Lord has given you to eat.

Hic est sermo,This is the word that the Lord has instructed.quem præcepit Dominus:Let each one collect as much of it as is sufficient to eat.Colligat unusquisque ex eo quantum sufficit ad vescendum:One omer for each head.gomor per singula capita,According to the number of your souls which live in a tent, juxta numerum animarum vestrarum quæ habitant in tabernaculo sic tolletis.so will you take of it.”

Feceruntque ita filii Israël:And the sons of Israel did so.et collegerunt,And they collected:alius plus,some more,alius minus.others less.

Et mensi sunt ad mensuram gomor:And they measured by the measure of an omer.nec qui plus collegerat, habuit amplius:He who collected more, did not have too much;nec qui minus paraverat, nor did he who prepared less, reperit minus:find too little.sed singuli juxta id quod edere poterant, congregaverunt. But each one gathered according to what they were able to eat.

Dixitque Moyses ad eos:And Moses said to them,Nullus relinquat ex eo in mane.“Let no one leave any of it behind until morning.”

Qui non audierunt eum,And they did not listen to him,sed dimiserunt quidam ex eis usque mane, but they left some of it behind until morning,et scatere cœpit vermibus, and it began to swarm with worms, atque computruit:and it putrefied.et iratus est contra eos Moyses. And Moses became angry against them.

Colligebant autem mane singuli,Then each one collected, in the morning, quantum sufficere poterat ad vescendum:as much as would be sufficient to eat.cumque incaluisset sol, liquefiebat. And after the sun became hot, it melted.

In die autem sexta collegerunt cibos duplices,But on the sixth day, they collected a double portion,id est, that is,duo gomor per singulos homines:two omers for each man.venerunt autem omnes principes multitudinis,Then all the leaders among the multitude came,et narraverunt Moysi.and they discoursed with Moses.

Qui ait eis:And he said to them:Hoc est quod locutus est Dominus:“This is what the Lord has spoken: Tomorrow,Requies sabbati sanctificata est Domino cras:the rest day of the Sabbath, has been sanctified to the Lord.quodcumque operandum est,Whatever would be done, do it now.facite, et quæ coquenda sunt coquite:And whatever would be cooked, cook it now.quidquid autem reliquum fuerit,Then anything that will have been left over, reponite usque in mane.store it until morning.”

Feceruntque ita ut præceperat Moyses,And they did just as Moses had instructed,et non computruit, and it did not putrefy, neque vermis inventus est in eo.nor were there any worms found in it.

Dixitque Moyses:And Moses said:Comedite illud hodie,“Eat it today, quia sabbatum est Domini:because it is the Sabbath of the Lord.non invenietur hodie in agro.Today it will not be found in the field.

Sex diebus colligite:Gather for six days.in die autem septimo sabbatum est Domini,But on the seventh day, it is the Sabbath of the Lord, idcirco non invenietur.for which reason it will not be found.”

Venitque septima dies:And the seventh day arrived.et egressi de populo ut colligerent,And some of the people, going out to collect it,non invenerunt.did not find it.

Dixit autem Dominus ad Moysen:Then the Lord said to Moses:Usquequo non vultis custodire mandata mea et legem meam?“How long will you be unwilling to keep my commandments and my law?

videte quod Dominus dederit vobis sabbatum,See how the Lord has given you the Sabbath, and,et propter hoc die sexta tribuit vobis cibos duplices:because of this, on the sixth day he distributes to you a double portion.maneat unusquisque apud semetipsum; nullus egrediatur de loco suo die septimo.Let each one remain with his own, and let no one go forth from his place on the seventh day.”

Et sabbatizavit populus die septimo. And the people kept the Sabbath on the seventh day.

Appellavitque domus Israël nomen ejus Man:And the house of Israel called its name ‘Manna.’quod erat quasi semen coriandri album,It was like white coriander seed, gustusque ejus quasi similæ cum melle.and its taste was like wheat flour with honey.

Dixit autem Moyses:Then Moses said:Iste est sermo, quem præcepit Dominus:“This is the word that the Lord has instructed:Imple gomor ex eo,Fill an omer of it,et custodiatur in futuras retro generationes: ut noverint panem, and let it be kept for future generations hereafter, so that they may know the bread, quo alui vos in solitudine, with which I nourished you in the wilderness, quando educti estis de terra Ægypti.when you had been led away from the land of Egypt.”

Dixitque Moyses ad Aaron:And Moses said to Aaron,Sume vas unum,“Take one vessel,et mitte ibi man,and put manna into it,quantum potest capere gomor,as much as an omer is able to hold.et repone coram Domino ad servandum in generationes vestras,And store it in the sight of the Lord, to keep for your generations,

sicut præcepit Dominus Moysi.just as the Lord instructed Moses.”Posuitque illud Aaron in tabernaculo reservandum. And so, Aaron placed it in the tabernacle, in reserve.

Filii autem Israël comederunt man quadraginta annis,Now the sons of Israel ate manna for forty years, donec venirent in terram habitabilem:until they arrived in a habitable land.hoc cibo aliti sunt,With this food they were nourished, usquequo tangerent fines terræ Chanaan.even until they touched the borders of the land of Canaan.

Gomor autem decima pars est ephi. Now an omer is a tenth part of an ephah.
