Cumque audisset Jethro,And when Jethro, sacerdos Madian, the priest of Midian, cognatus Moysi, the kinsman of Moses, omnia quæ fecerat Deus Moysi, had heard all that God had done for Moses,et Israëli populo suo,and for his people Israel,et quod eduxisset Dominus Israël de Ægypto, and that the Lord had led Israel away from Egypt,
tulit Sephoram uxorem Moysi quam remiserat,he brought Zipporah, the wife of Moses, whom he was to return to him,
et duos filios ejus:and her two sons, quorum unus vocabatur Gersam,of whom one was called Gershom, dicente patre:(for his father said,Advena fui in terra aliena;“I have been a newcomer in a foreign land,”)
alter vero Eliezer:and the other in truth was Eliezer,Deus enim,(“For the God of my father,”ait,he said, patris mei adjutor meus,“is my helper,et eruit me de gladio Pharaonis.and has rescued me from the sword of Pharaoh.”)
Venit ergo Jethro cognatus Moysi,And so Jethro, the kinsman of Moses,et filii ejus, et uxor ejus ad Moysen in desertum, with his sons and his wife, came to Moses in the desert, ubi erat castrametatus juxta montem Dei.where he was encamped next to the mountain of God.
Et mandavit Moysi,And he sent word to Moses, dicens:saying: “I,Ego Jethro cognatus tuus venio ad te,Jethro, your kinsman, have come to you,et uxor tua, with your wife,et duo filii cum ea.and your two sons with her.”
Qui egressus in occursum cognati sui,And going out to meet his kinsman, adoravit,he reverencedet osculatus est eum:and kissed him.salutaveruntque se mutuo verbis pacificis. And they saluted each other with peaceful words.Cumque intrasset tabernaculum,And when he had arrived at the tent,
narravit Moyses cognato suo cuncta quæ fecerat Dominus Pharaoni et Ægyptiis propter Israël:Moses explained to his kinsman all that the Lord had done to Pharaohuniversumque laborem, and to the Egyptians on behalf of Israel, qui accidisset eis in itinere, and all the hardships which had befallen them on the journey,et quod liberaverat eos Dominus.and how the Lord had freed them.
Lætatusque est Jethro super omnibus bonis, quæ fecerat Dominus Israëli,And Jethro was gladdened over all the good that the Lord had done for Israel,eo quod eruisset eum de manu Ægyptiorum.because he had rescued them from the hand of the Egyptians.
Et ait:And he said:Benedictus Dominus,“Blessed is the Lord, qui liberavit vos de manu Ægyptiorum, who has freed his people from the hand of the Egyptianset de manu Pharaonis;and from the hand of Pharaoh;qui eruit populum suum de manu Ægypti.he has rescued his people from the hand of Egypt.
Nunc cognovi, quia magnus Dominus super omnes deos:Now I know that the great Lord is above all gods.eo quod superbe egerint contra illos. This is why they acted arrogantly against them.”
Obtulit ergo Jethro cognatus Moysi holocaustaAnd so Jethro,et hostias Deo:the kinsman of Moses, veneruntque Aaronoffered holocausts and sacrifices to God.et omnes seniores Israël,And Aaron arrived with all the elders of Israel,ut comederent panem cum eo coram Deo.in order to eat bread with him in the sight of God.
Altera autem die sedit Moyses ut judicaret populum,Then, the next day, Moses sat down in order to judge the people, qui assistebat Moysi a mane usque ad vesperam.and they stood beside Moses from morning, even until evening.
Quod cum vidisset cognatus ejus,And when, of course, omnia scilicet quæ agebat in populo, ait:his kinsman saw all that he did among the people, he said:Quid est hoc quod facis in plebe?“What is this that you do among the people?cur solus sedes,Why do you sit alone,et omnis populus præstolatur de mane usque ad vesperam?while all the people stand before you, from morning, even until evening?”
Cui respondit Moyses:And Moses answered him:Venit ad me populus quærens sententiam Dei:“The people come to me seeking the verdict of God.
cumque acciderit eis aliqua disceptatio,And when any kind of dispute occurs among them, veniunt ad me ut judicem inter eos, they come to me to judge between them,et ostendam præcepta Dei,and to reveal the precepts of Godet leges ejus.and of his laws.”
At ille:But he said,Non bonam,“This is not good, inquit, rem facis.what you are doing.
Stulto labore consumeris et tu,You will be consumed by foolish efforts,et populus iste qui tecum est:both you and this people who are with you.ultra vires tuas est negotium; The task is beyond your strength;solus illud non poteris sustinere.you will not be able bear it alone.
Sed audi verba mea atque consilia,But listen to my words and counsels,et erit Deus tecum.and then God will be with you.Esto tu populo in his quæ ad Deum pertinent,Be available to the people in that which pertains to God,ut referas quæ dicuntur ad eum:so as to refer what they say to him,
ostendasque populo cæremoniasand to reveal to the people the ceremonies,et ritum colendi, and the rituals of worship, viamque per quam ingredi debeant, and the way by which they should progress,et opus quod facere debeant.and the work that they should do.
Provide autem de omni plebe viros potentes,Then provide,et timentes Deum, from all of the people,in quibus sit veritas, men capable and fearing God,et qui oderint avaritiam,in whom there is truth and who hate avarice,et constitue ex eis tribunos, and appoint from them tribunes,et centuriones, and leaders of hundreds,et quinquagenarios, and of fifties,et decanos, and of tens,
qui judicent populum omni tempore:who may judge the people at all times. Then, quidquid autem majus fuerit, when anything greater will have occurred, referant ad te,they may refer it to you,et ipsi minora tantummodo judicent:and let them judge the lesser matters only.leviusque sit tibi,And so it may be lighter for you, partito in alios onere.the burden being divided among others.
Si hoc feceris,If you will do this, implebis imperium Dei,you will fulfill the orders of God,et præcepta ejus poteris sustentare:and you will be able to uphold his precepts.et omnis hic populus revertetur ad loca sua cum pace. And this entire people will return to their places in peace.”
Quibus auditis,Having heard this,Moyses fecit omnia quæ ille suggesserat.Moses did everything that he had suggested to him.
Et electis viris strenuis de cuncto Israël,And choosing virtuous men from all of Israel, constituit eos principes populi,he appointed them as leaders of the people:tribunos, tribunes,et centuriones, and leaders of hundreds,et quinquagenarios, and of fifties,et decanos.and of tens.
Qui judicabant plebem omni tempore:And they judged the people at all times.quidquid autem gravius erat,But whatever was more serious, referebant ad eum, they referred to him, faciliora tantummodo judicantes.and they judged easier matters only.
Dimisitque cognatum suum:And he dismissed his kinsman, qui reversus abiit in terram suam.who, turning back, went to his own land.
