Mense tertio egressionis Israël de terra Ægypti,In the third month of the departure of Israel from the land of Egypt,in die hac venerunt in solitudinem Sinai.in that day, they arrived in the wilderness of Sinai.
Nam profecti de Raphidim,Thus, setting out from Raphidim,et pervenientes usque in desertum Sinai, and going directly to the desert of Sinai, castrametati sunt in eodem loco, ibique Israël fixit tentoria e regione montis.they encamped in the same place, and there Israel pitched their tents away from the region of the mountain.
Moyses autem ascendit ad Deum:Then Moses ascended to God.vocavitque eum Dominus de monte,And the Lord called to him from the mountain,et ait:and he said:Hæc dices domui Jacob,“This you shall say to the house of Jacob,et annuntiabis filiis Israël:and announce to the sons of Israel:
Vos ipsi vidistis quæ fecerim Ægyptiis,‘You have seen what I have done to the Egyptians, quomodo portaverim vos super alas aquilarum,in what way I carried you upon the wings of eagleset assumpserim mihi.and how I have taken you for myself.
Si ergo audieritis vocem meam,If, therefore, you will hear my voice,et custodieritis pactum meum, and you will keep my covenant, eritis mihi in peculium de cunctis populis:you will be to me a particular possession out of all people.mea est enim omnis terra:For all the earth is mine.
et vos eritis mihi in regnum sacerdotale,And you will be to me a priestly kingdomet gens sancta.and a holy nation.’Hæc sunt verba quæ loqueris ad filios Israël.These are the words that you will speak to the sons of Israel.”
Venit Moyses:Moses went,et convocatis majoribus natu populi, and calling together those greater by birth among the people, exposuit omnes sermones quos mandaverat Dominus.he set forth all the words which the Lord had commanded.
Responditque omnis populus simul:And all the people responded together:Cuncta quæ locutus est Dominus,“Everything that the Lord has spoken, faciemus.we shall do.”Cumque retulisset Moyses verba populi ad Dominum,And when Moses had related the words of the people to the Lord,
ait ei Dominus:the Lord said to him:Jam nunc veniam ad te in caligine nubis,“Soon now, I will come to you in the mist of a cloud,ut audiat me populus loquentem ad te,so that the people may hear me speaking to you,et credat tibi in perpetuum.and so that they may believe you continuously.”Nuntiavit ergo Moyses verba populi ad Dominum. Therefore, Moses reported the words of the people to the Lord,
Qui dixit ei:who said to him:Vade ad populum,“Go to the people,et sanctifica illos hodie, and sanctify them today,et cras, and tomorrow, laventque vestimenta sua.and let them wash their garments.
Et sint parati in diem tertium: in die enim tertia descendet Dominus coram omni plebe super montem Sinai. And let them be prepared on the third day. For on the third day, the Lord will descend, in the sight of all the people, over Mount Sinai.
Constituesque terminos populo per circuitum,And you will establish limits for the people all around,et dices ad eos:and you will say to them:Cavete ne ascendatis in montem,‘Take care not to ascend to the mountain, nec tangatis fines illius:and that you do not touch its parts.omnis qui tetigerit montem,All who touch the mountain, morte morietur.shall die a death.’
Manus non tanget eum,Hands shall not touch him,sed lapidibus opprimetur, but he shall be crushed with stones, aut confodietur jaculis:or he shall be pierced through with darts.sive jumentum fuerit,Whether it be a beastsive homo,or a man,non vivet:he shall not live.cum cœperit clangere buccina,For when the trumpet begins to sound, tunc ascendant in montem.perhaps they might go up toward the mountain.”
Descenditque Moyses de monte ad populum,And Moses came down from the mountain to the people,et sanctificavit eum.and he sanctified them.Cumque lavissent vestimenta sua,And when they had washed their garments,
ait ad eos:he said to them,Estote parati in diem tertium,“Be prepared on the third day,et ne appropinquetis uxoribus vestris.and do not draw near to your wives.”
Jamque advenerat tertius dies, et mane inclaruerat:And now, the third day arrived and the morning dawned.et ecce cœperunt audiri tonitrua,And behold, thunders began to be heard,ac micare fulgura, and also lightning flashed,et nubes densissima operire montem, and a very dense cloud covered the mountain, clangorque buccinæ vehementius perstrepebat:and the noise of the trumpet resounded vehemently.et timuit populus qui erat in castris. And the people who were in the camp were fearful.
Cumque eduxisset eos Moyses in occursum Dei de loco castrorum,And when Moses had led them out to meet God, from the place of the camp, steterunt ad radices montis.they stood at the base of the mountain.
Totus autem mons Sinai fumabat,Then all of Mount Sinai was smoking.eo quod descendisset Dominus super eum in igne:For the Lord had descended over it with fire,et ascenderet fumus ex eo quasi de fornace, and smoke ascended from it, as from a furnace.eratque omnis mons terribilis. And the entire mountain was terrible.
Et sonitus buccinæ paulatim crescebat in majus,And the sound of the trumpet gradually increased to be louder,et prolixius tendebatur:and extended to be longer.Moyses loquebatur,Moses was speaking,et Deus respondebat ei.and God was answering him.
Descenditque Dominus super montem Sinai in ipso montis vertice,And the Lord descended over Mount Sinai, to the very top of the mountain,et vocavit Moysen in cacumen ejus. Quo cum ascendisset, and he called Moses to its summit. And when he had ascended there,
dixit ad eum:he said to him:Descende,“Descend,et contestare populum:and call the people to witness,ne forte velit transcendere terminos ad videndum Dominum, lest they might be willing to transgress the limits, so as to see the Lord,et pereat ex eis plurima multitudo.and a very great multitude of them might perish.
Sacerdotes quoque qui accedunt ad Dominum,Likewise, the priests who approach toward the Lord, sanctificentur, let them be sanctified,ne percutiat eos.lest he strike them down.”
Dixitque Moyses ad Dominum:And Moses said to the Lord:Non poterit vulgus ascendere in montem Sinai:“The people are not able to ascend to Mount Sinai.tu enim testificatus es,For you testified,et jussisti, and you commanded, dicens:saying:Pone terminos circa montem,‘Set limits around the mountain,et sanctifica illum.and sanctify it.’”
Cui ait Dominus:And the Lord said to him,Vade,“Go,descende:descend.ascendesque tu,And you shall ascend,et Aaron tecum:and Aaron with you.sacerdotes autem et populus ne transeant terminos,But let not the priests or the people transgress the limits, nec ascendant ad Dominum, nor ascend to the Lord,ne forte interficiat illos.lest perhaps he may put them to death.”
Descenditque Moyses ad populum,And Moses descended to the people,et omnia narravit eis.and he explained everything to them.
