Hæc sunt judicia quæ propones eis.“These are the judgments which you shall place before them:

Si emeris servum hebræum,If you buy a Hebrew servant, sex annis serviet tibi:six years shall he serve you;in septimo egredietur liber gratis.in the seventh, he shall depart freely, without charge.

Cum quali veste intraverit,With whatever clothing he arrived, cum tali exeat: si habens uxorem, with the like let him depart. If he has a wife,et uxor egredietur simul.his wife also shall depart, at the same time.

Sin autem dominus dederit illi uxorem,But if his lord gave him a wife,et pepererit filios et filias:and she has borne sons and daughters, mulier et liberi ejus erunt domini sui,the woman and her children shall belong to her lord. Yet still, ipse vero exibit cum vestitu suo.he himself will go out with his clothing.

Quod si dixerit servus:And if the servant will say,Diligo dominum meum et uxorem ac liberos;‘I love my lord, and my wife and children, non egrediar liber:I will not depart freely,’

offeret eum dominus diis, then his lord shall make an offering for him to the heavens,et applicabitur ad ostium et postes, and it shall be applied to the door and the posts, perforabitque aurem ejus subula:and he will pierce his ear with an awl.et erit ei servus in sæculum. And he shall be his servant in perpetuity.

Si quis vendiderit filiam suam in famulam,If anyone sells his daughter to be a servant, non egredietur sicut ancillæ exire consueverunt.she shall not depart as a female servant is accustomed to go out.

Si displicuerit oculis domini sui cui tradita fuerat,If she displeases the eyes of her lord, to whom she had been delivered, dimittet eam:he shall dismiss her.populo autem alieno vendendi non habebit potestatem,But he shall have no authority to sell her to a foreign people,si spreverit eam.even if he despises her.

Sin autem filio suo desponderit eam,But if he has betrothed her to his son, juxta morem filiarum faciet illi.he shall treat her according to the custom with daughters.

Quod si alteram ei acceperit,And if he takes another for him, providebit puellæ nuptias,he shall provide to the maiden a marriage,et vestimenta, and clothing,et pretium pudicitiæ non negabit.and he shall not refuse the price of her chastity.

Si tria ista non fecerit,If he does not do these three things, egredietur gratis absque pecunia.she shall depart freely, without money.

Qui percusserit hominem volens occidere,Whoever strikes a man, intending to murder, morte moriatur.shall be put to death.

Qui autem non est insidiatus,But if he did not lie in wait for him,sed Deus illum tradidit in manus ejus, but God delivered him into his hands, constituam tibi locum in quem fugere debeat.then I will appoint for you a place to which he must flee.

Si quis per industriam occiderit proximum suum,If someone murders his neighbor with deliberation,et per insidias:by lying in wait,ab altari meo evelles eum,you shall tear him away from my altar,ut moriatur.so that he may die.

Qui percusserit patrem suum aut matrem,Whoever strikes his fathermorte moriatur.or mother shall die a death.

Qui furatus fuerit hominem,Whoever will have stolen a manet vendiderit eum,and sold him, convictus noxæ,having been convicted of the crime, morte moriatur.shall be put to death.

Qui maledixerit patri suo, vel matri, morte moriatur.Whoever speaks evil of his father or mother shall die a death.

Si rixati fuerint viri,If men will have quarreled,et percusserit alter proximum suum lapide vel pugno, and one of them has struck his neighbor with a stone or a fist,et ille mortuus non fuerit, and he does not die,sed jacuerit in lectulo:but lies in bed,

si surrexerit, et ambulaverit foris super baculum suum,if he gets up again and can walk outside on his staff, innocens erit qui percusserit,he who struck him will be innocent, ita tamen ut operas ejus et impensas in medicos restituat.but only if he makes sufficient restitution for his deeds and for the cost of the physicians.

Qui percusserit servum suum,Whoever strikes his malevel ancillam virga,or female servant with a staff,et mortui fuerint in manibus ejus, and if they have died by his hands, criminis reus erit.he shall be guilty of a crime.

Sin autem uno die vel duobus supervixerit,But if he survives for one day or two,non subjacebit pœnæ,he shall not be subject to punishment, quia pecunia illius est.because it is his money.

Si rixati fuerint viri,If men will have quarreled,et percusserit quis mulierem prægnantem, and one of them has struck a pregnant woman,et abortivum quidem fecerit, and as a result she miscarries, sed ipsa vixerit:but she herself survives, subjacebit damno quantum maritus mulieris expetierit,he shall be subject to as much damage as the husband of the woman shall petition from him,et arbitri judicaverint.or as arbitrators shall judge.

Sin autem mors ejus fuerit subsecuta,But if her death will have followed, reddet animam pro anima,he will repay a life for a life,

oculum pro oculo,an eye for an eye, dentem pro dente,a tooth for a tooth, manum pro manu,a hand for a hand, pedem pro pede,a foot for a foot,

adustionem pro adustione,a scrape for a scrape,vulnus pro vulnere,a wound for a wound,livorem pro livore.a bruise for a bruise.

Si percusserit quispiam oculum servi suiIf anyone will have struck the eye of his male or female servant, aut ancillæ,having left them with one eye,et luscos eos fecerit,he shall release them freely, dimittet eos liberos pro oculo quem eruit.because of the eye that he has put out.

Dentem quoque si excusserit servoLikewise, vel ancillæ suæ,if he knocks out a tooth of his male or female servant, similiter dimittet eos liberos.he shall similarly release them freely.

Si bos cornu percusserit virumIf an ox has struck a man or a woman with his horn, aut mulierem, and if they die,et mortui fuerint,it shall be stoned.lapidibus obruetur:And its flesh shall not be eaten;et non comedentur carnes ejus, also, dominus quoque bovis innocens erit.the owner of the ox will be innocent.

Quod si bos cornupeta fuerit ab heri et nudiustertius,But if the ox had been pushing with his horn, from yesterday and the day before,et contestati sunt dominum ejus, and they warned his owner, nec recluserit eum,but he did not confine it,occideritque virum aut mulierem:and it will have killed a man or a woman,et bos lapidibus obruetur, then the ox shall be stoned,et dominum ejus occident.and his owner shall be killed.

Quod si pretium fuerit ei impositum,But if they have imposed a price on him, dabit pro anima sua quidquid fuerit postulatus.he shall give, in exchange for his life, whatever is asked.

Filium quoqueLikewise,et filiam si cornu percusserit,if it has struck a son or a daughter with its horns, simili sententiæ subjacebit.it shall be subject to a similar verdict.

Si servum ancillamque invaserit,If it attacks a male or female servant, triginta siclos argenti domino dabit,he shall give thirty shekels of silver to their lord, bos vero lapidibus opprimetur.yet truly the ox shall be stoned.

Si quis aperuerit cisternam, et foderit,If a man digs or opens a cistern,et non operuerit eam,and does not cover it,cecideritque bos aut asinus in eam,and an ox or a donkey falls into it,

reddet dominus cisternæ pretium jumentorum:then the owner of the cistern shall repay the price of the beasts, quod autem mortuum est, ipsius erit.and what is dead will belong to him.

Si bos alienus bovem alterius vulneraverit,If the ox of a stranger wounds the ox of another,et ille mortuus fuerit:and it has died, vendent bovem vivum, then they shall sell the live oxet divident pretium, and divide the price, cadaver autem mortui inter se dispertient.but the carcass of the dead one they shall distribute between them.

Sin autem sciebat quod bos cornupeta esset ab heriBut if he knew that his ox had pushed with its horns,et nudiustertius, yesterday and the day before,et non custodivit eum dominus suus:and its owner did not confine it,reddet bovem pro bove, then he shall repay an ox for an ox,et cadaver integrum accipiet.and he will receive the whole carcass.”
