Respondens Moyses ait:Responding, Moses said,Non credent mihi,“They will not believe me,neque audient vocem meam, and they will not listen to my voice, sed dicent:but they will say:Non apparuit tibi Dominus.‘The Lord has not appeared to you.’”

Dixit ergo ad eum:Therefore, he said to him,Quid est quod tenes in manu tua?“What is that you hold in your hand?”Respondit:He answered,Virga.“A staff.”

Dixitque Dominus:And the Lord said,Projice eam in terram.“Cast it down upon the ground.”Projecit,He cast it down,et versa est in colubrum, and it was turned into a snake, ita ut fugeret Moyses.so that Moses fled away.

Dixitque Dominus:And the Lord said,Extende manum tuam,“Reach out your hand,et apprehende caudam ejus.and take hold of its tail.”Extendit,He reached out his handet tenuit, and took hold, versaque est in virgam.and it was turned into a staff.

Ut credant, inquit,“So may they believe,”quod apparuerit tibi Dominus Deus patrum suorum,he said, “that the Lord God of their fathers, the God of Abraham,Deus Abraham, the God of Isaac,Deus Isaac et Deus Jacob.and the God of Jacob, has appeared to you.”

Dixitque Dominus rursum:And the Lord said again,Mitte manum tuam in sinum tuum.“Put your hand into your bosom.”Quam cum misisset in sinum,And when he had put it into his bosom, protulit leprosam instar nivis.he brought it out leprous, resembling snow.

Retrahe,“Put your hand back,”ait,he said, manum tuam in sinum tuum.“into your bosom.”Retraxit,He put it backet protulit iterum, and brought it out again,et erat similis carni reliquæ.and it was like the rest of his flesh.

Si non crediderint, inquit,“If they will not believe you,”tibi,he said, neque audierint sermonem signi prioris,“and will not listen to the sermon of the first sign, credent verbo signi sequentis.then they will believe the word of the subsequent sign.

Quod si nec duobus quidem his signis crediderint,But if they will not believe even these two signs, neque audierint vocem tuam:and they will not listen to your voice:sume aquam fluminis, et effunde eam super aridam, take from the water of the river, and pour it upon the dry land,et quidquid hauseris de fluvio, vertetur in sanguinem.and whatever you will have drawn from the river will be turned into blood.”

Ait Moyses:Moses said:Obsecro,“I beg you,Domine,O Lord, non sum eloquens ab heri et nudiustertius:I was not eloquent yesterday or the day before.et ex quo locutus es ad servum tuum,And from the time that you have spoken to your servant, impeditioris et tardioris linguæ sum.I have a greater impediment and slowness of tongue.”

Dixit Dominus ad eum:The Lord said to him:Quis fecit os hominis?“Who made the mouth of man?aut quis fabricatus est mutum et surdum,And who has formed the mute and the deaf, videntem et cæcum?the seeing and the blind?nonne ego?Was it not I?

Perge,Go on,igitur, therefore,et ego ero in ore tuo:and I will be in your mouth.doceboque te quid loquaris. And I will teach you what you shall say.”

At ille:But he said,Obsecro,“I beg you, inquit,O Lord,Domine, mitte quem missurus es.send whomever else you would send.”

Iratus Dominus in Moysen,The Lord, being angry at Moses, ait:said:Aaron frater tuus Levites,“Aaron the Levite is your brother.scio quod eloquens sit:I know that he is eloquent.ecce ipse egreditur in occursum tuum,Behold, he is going out to meet you, vidensque te lætabitur corde.and seeing you, he will rejoice in heart.

Loquere ad eum,Speak to him,et pone verba mea in ore ejus:and put my words in his mouth.et ego ero in ore tuo,And I will be in your mouthet in ore illius, and in his mouth,et ostendam vobis quid agere debeatis.and I will reveal to you what you must do.

Ipse loquetur pro te ad populum,He will speak for you to the people,et erit os tuum:and he will be your mouth.tu autem eris ei in his quæ ad Deum pertinent. But you will be with him in those things that pertain to God.

Virgam quoque hanc sume in manu tua,Also, take this staff into your hand;in qua facturus es signa.with it you will accomplish the signs.”

Abiit Moyses,Moses went forth,et reversus est ad Jethro socerum suum, and he returned to Jethro, dixitque ei:his father in law,Vadamand he said to him,et revertar ad fratres meos in Ægyptum,“I shall go and return to my brothers in Egypt,ut videam si adhuc vivant.so that I may see if they are still alive.”Cui ait Jethro:And Jethro said to him,Vade in pace.“Go in peace.”

Dixit ergo Dominus ad Moysen in Madian:And so the Lord said to Moses in Midian:Vade,“Go,et revertere in Ægyptum, and return to Egypt.mortui sunt enim omnes qui quærebant animam tuam. For all those who sought your life have died.”

Tulit ergo Moyses uxorem suam,Therefore,et filios suos,Moses took his wife and his sons,et imposuit eos super asinum:and he placed them upon a donkey, reversusque est in Ægyptum, and he returned into Egypt, portans virgam Dei in manu sua.carrying the staff of God in his hand.

Dixitque ei Dominus revertenti in Ægyptum:And the Lord said to him, as he was returning to Egypt:Vide ut omnia ostenta quæ posui in manu tua,“See that you accomplish, in the sight of Pharaoh, facias coram Pharaone: ego indurabo cor ejus, all the wonders that I have placed in your hand. I will harden his heart,et non dimittet populum.and he will not release the people.

Dicesque ad eum:And you shall say to him:Hæc dicit Dominus:‘Thus says the Lord:Filius meus primogenitus Israël.Israel is my firstborn son.

Dixi tibi:I have said to you:Dimitte filium meum ut serviat mihi;Release my son, so that he may serve me.et noluisti dimittere eum:And you were not willing to release him.ecce ego interficiam filium tuum primogenitum.Behold, I will put to death your firstborn son.’”

Cumque esset in itinere,And while he was on the journey,in diversorio occurrit ei Dominus,at an inn, the Lord met him,et volebat occidere eum.and he was willing to kill him.

Tulit idcirco Sephora acutissimam petram,For this reason, Zipporah took a very sharp stone,et circumcidit præputium filii sui,and she circumcised the foreskin of her son, tetigitque pedes ejus, and she touched his feet,et ait: Sponsus sanguinum tu mihi es.and she said, “You are a bloody spouse to me.”

Et dimisit eum postquam dixerat:And he released him, after she had said,Sponsus sanguinum ob circumcisionem.“You are a bloody spouse,” because of the circumcision.

Dixit autem Dominus ad Aaron:Then the Lord said to Aaron,Vade in occursum Moysi in desertum.“Go into the desert to meet Moses.”Qui perrexit obviam ei in montem Dei,And he went directly to meet him on the mountain of God,et osculatus est eum.and he kissed him.

Narravitque Moyses Aaron omnia verba Domini quibus miserat eum,And Moses explained to Aaron all the words of the Lord, by which he had sent him,et signa quæ mandaverat.and the signs which he had commanded.

Veneruntque simul,And they arrived at the same time,et congregaverunt cunctos seniores filiorum Israël.and they gathered together all the elders of the sons of Israel.

Locutusque est Aaron omnia verba quæ dixerat Dominus ad Moysen:And Aaron spoke all the words which the Lord had said to Moses.et fecit signa coram populo,And he accomplished the signs in the sight of the people,

et credidit populus.and the people believed.Audieruntque quod visitasset Dominus filios Israël,And they heard that the Lord had visited the sons of Israel,et respexisset afflictionem illorum:and that he had looked with favor upon their affliction.et proni adoraverunt. And falling prostrate, they worshiped.
