Post hæc ingressi sunt Moyses et Aaron,After these things, Moses and Aaron entered,et dixerunt Pharaoni:and they said to Pharaoh:Hæc dicit Dominus Deus Israël:“Thus says the Lord God of Israel:Dimitte populum meum ut sacrificet mihi in deserto.Release my people, so that they may sacrifice to me in the desert.”
At ille respondit:But he responded:Quis est Dominus,“Who is the Lord,ut audiam vocem ejus, that I should listen to his voiceet dimittam Israël?and release Israel?nescio Dominum,I do not know the Lord,et Israël non dimittam.and I will not release Israel.”
Dixeruntque:And they said:Deus Hebræorum vocavit nos,“The God of the Hebrews has called us,ut eamus viam trium dierum in solitudinem,so that we may go three days’ journey into the wilderness and sacrifice to the Lord our God.et sacrificemus Domino Deo nostro:Otherwise,ne forte accidat nobis pestis aut gladius.a pestilence or the sword may befall us.”
Ait ad eos rex Ægypti:The king of Egypt said to them:Quare Moyses et Aaron sollicitatis populum ab operibus suis?“Why do you, Moses and Aaron, distract the people from their works?ite ad onera vestra.Go back to your burdens.”
Dixitque Pharao:And Pharaoh said:Multus est populus terræ:“The people of the land are many.videtis quod turba succreverit:You see that the turmoil has increased:quanto magis si dederitis eis requiem ab operibus?how much more if you give them rest from the works?”
Præcepit ergo in die illo præfectis operum et exactoribus populi, dicens:Therefore, on the same day, he instructed the overseers of the works, and the taskmasters of the people, saying:
Nequaquam ultra dabitis paleas populo ad conficiendos lateres,“You shall no longer give chaff to the people to form bricks, sicut prius:as before.sed ipsi vadant,But they may goet colligant stipulas.and gather straw.
Et mensuram laterum, quam prius faciebant, imponetis super eos,And you shall impose upon them the same quota of bricks that they made before.nec minuetis quidquam: vacant enim,Neither will you lessen anything,et idcirco vociferantur, dicentes:for they are idle, and therefore they cry out,Eamus, saying:et sacrificemus Deo nostro.‘We shall go and sacrifice to our God.’
Opprimantur operibus,They shall be oppressed with works,et expleant ea:and these shall occupy them,ut non acquiescant verbis mendacibus.so that they may not agree to lying words.”
Igitur egressi præfecti operum et exactores ad populum, dixerunt:And so the overseers of the works and the taskmasters went out and said to the people:Sic dicit Pharao:“Thus says Pharaoh:Non do vobis paleas:I give you no chaff.
ite,Go,et colligite sicubi invenire poteritis, and collect it wherever you are able to find it.nec minuetur quidquam de opere vestro.Neither will anything of your work be diminished.”
Dispersusque est populus per omnem terram Ægypti ad colligendas paleas. And the people were dispersed through all the land of Egypt, in order to gather straw.
Præfecti quoque operum instabant, dicentes:Likewise, the overseers of the works pressured them,Complete opus vestrum quotidie, saying: “Complete your work each day,ut prius facere solebatis quando dabantur vobis paleæ.just as you were accustomed to do before, when straw was given to you.”
Flagellatique sunt qui præerant operibus filiorum Israël,And those who were first in the works of the sons of Israel were scourged by Pharaoh’s taskmasters,ab exactoribus Pharaonis, saying:dicentibus:“Why have you not filled the quota of bricks,Quare non impletis mensuram laterum sicut prius, neither yesterday, nec heri, nor today, nec hodie?just as before?”
Veneruntque præpositi filiorum Israël,And the first among the sons of Israel came,et vociferati sunt ad Pharaonem dicentes:and they cried out to Pharaoh, saying:Cur ita agis contra servos tuos?“Why do act against your servants in this way?
paleæ non dantur nobis,Straw is not given to us,et lateres similiter imperantur:and yet the same amount of bricks is commanded.en famuli tui flagellis cædimur,So we, your servants, are cut up by scourging,et injuste agitur contra populum tuum.and injustice is done against your people.”
Qui ait:And he said:Vacatis otio,“You are idle.et idcirco dicitis:And for this reason you say,Eamus,‘We shall goet sacrificemus Domino.and sacrifice to the Lord.’
Ite ergo,Therefore,et operamini:go and work.paleæ non dabuntur vobis,Straw will not be given to you,et reddetis consuetum numerum laterum.and you will return the customary number of bricks.”
Videbantque se præpositi filiorum Israël in malo,And the first among the sons of Israel saw themselves in a crisis,eo quod diceretur eis:because it was said to them,Non minuetur quidquam de lateribus per singulos dies.“Nothing at all will be lessened from the bricks throughout each day.”
Occurreruntque Moysi et Aaron,And they met with Mosesqui stabant ex adverso, and Aaron, egredientibus a Pharaone:who stood opposite them as they departed from Pharaoh.
et dixerunt ad eos:And they said to them:Videat Dominus et judicet,“May the Lord see and judge, quoniam fœtere fecistis odorem nostrum coram Pharaone et servis ejus, because you have caused our odor to become foul before Pharaoh and his servants,et præbuistis ei gladium, and you have provided him with a sword,ut occideret nos.in order to kill us.”
Reversusque est Moyses ad Dominum,And Moses returned to the Lord,et ait:and he said:Domine,“Lord, cur afflixisti populum istum?why have you afflicted this people?quare misisti me?Why have you sent me?
ex eo enim quo ingressus sum ad Pharaonem ut loquerer in nomine tuo,For from the time that I entered to Pharaoh, so as to speak in your name, afflixit populum tuum:he has afflicted your people.et non liberasti eos.And you have not freed them.”
