Dixitque Dominus ad Moysen:And the Lord said to Moses: “Behold,Ecce constitui te Deum Pharaonis:I have appointed you as the god of Pharaoh.et Aaron frater tuus erit propheta tuus. And Aaron, your brother, will be your prophet.
Tu loqueris ei omnia quæ mando tibi:You will speak to him all that I command you.et ille loquetur ad Pharaonem,And he will speak to Pharaoh,ut dimittat filios Israël de terra sua.so that he may release the sons of Israel from his land.
Sed ego indurabo cor ejus,But I will harden his heart,et multiplicabo signa et ostenta mea in terra Ægypti, and I will multiply my signs and wonders in the land of Egypt,
et non audiet vos:and he will not listen to you.immittamque manum meam super Ægyptum,And I will send my hand over Egypt, and I will lead my army and my people,et educam exercitum et populum meum filios Israël de terra Ægypti per judicia maxima.the sons of Israel, from the land of Egypt, through very great judgments.
Et scient Ægyptii quia ego sum Dominus qui extenderim manum meam super Ægyptum,And the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord, who has extended my hand over Egypt,et eduxerim filios Israël de medio eorum.and who has led the sons of Israel from their midst.”
Fecit itaque MoysesAnd so,et Aaron sicut præceperat Dominus:Moses and Aaron did just as the Lord had instructed.ita egerunt. And so it was done.
Erat autem Moyses octoginta annorum,Now Moses was eighty years old,et Aaron octoginta trium, and Aaron eighty-three,quando locuti sunt ad Pharaonem.when they spoke to Pharaoh.
Dixitque Dominus ad Moysen et Aaron:And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron:
Cum dixerit vobis Pharao,“When Pharaoh will say to you,Ostendite signa:‘Show signs,’dices ad Aaron:you shall say to Aaron,Tolle virgam tuam,‘Take your staff,et projice eam coram Pharaone, and cast it down before Pharaoh,ac vertetur in colubrum.and it will be turned into a snake.’”
Ingressi itaque Moyses et Aaron ad Pharaonem,And so Moses and Aaron entered to Pharaoh, fecerunt sicut præceperat Dominus:and they did just as the Lord had commanded.tulitque Aaron virgam coram Pharaone et servis ejus,And Aaron took the staff in the sight of Pharaoh and his servants,quæ versa est in colubrum.and it was turned into a snake.
Vocavit autem Pharao sapientesThen Pharaoh called the wise men and the sorcerers.et maleficos:And they also,et fecerunt etiam ipsi per incantationes ægyptiacasby Egyptian incantations and certain secrets,et arcana quædam similiter.did similarly.
Projeceruntque singuli virgas suas,And each one cast down their staffs,quæ versæ sunt in dracones:and they were turned into serpents.sed devoravit virga Aaron virgas eorum. But the staff of Aaron devoured their staffs.
Induratumque est cor Pharaonis,And the heart of Pharaoh was hardened,et non audivit eos,and he did not listen to them, sicut præceperat Dominus.just as the Lord had instructed.
Dixit autem Dominus ad Moysen:Then the Lord said to Moses:Ingravatum est cor Pharaonis:“The heart of Pharaoh has been hardened;non vult dimittere populum.he is not willing to release the people.
Vade ad eum mane,Go to him in the morning;ecce egredietur ad aquas:behold, he will go out to the waters.et stabis in occursum ejus super ripam fluminis:And you will stand to meet him above the bank of the river. And you will take,et virgam quæ conversa est in draconem, tolles in manu tua.in your hand, the staff that was turned into a serpent.
Dicesque ad eum:And you will say to him:Dominus Deus Hebræorum misit me ad te,‘The Lord God of the Hebrews sent me to you, dicens:saying:Dimitte populum meum ut sacrificet mihi in deserto:Release my people in order to sacrifice to me in the desert.et usque ad præsens audire noluisti. And even until the present time, you were not willing to listen.
Hæc igitur dicit Dominus:Therefore, thus says the Lord:In hoc scies quod sim Dominus:In this you will know that I am the Lord.ecce percutiam virga,Behold, I will strike,quæ in manu mea est, with the staff that is in my hand, aquam fluminis, the water of the river,et vertetur in sanguinem.and it will be turned into blood.
Pisces quoque, qui sunt in fluvio,Also, the fishes that are in the river will die, morientur, et computrescent aquæ,and the waters will be polluted,et affligentur Ægyptii bibentes aquam fluminis.and the Egyptians will be afflicted when they drink the water of the river.’”
Dixit quoque Dominus ad Moysen:The Lord also said to Moses:Dic ad Aaron:“Say to Aaron:Tolle virgam tuam,‘Take your staff;et extende manum tuam super aquas Ægypti, and extend your hand over the waters of Egypt,et super fluvios eorum, et rivos ac paludes, et omnes lacus aquarum, and over their rivers and streams and marshes and all the pools of waters,ut vertantur in sanguinem:so that they may be turned into blood.et sit cruor in omni terra Ægypti,And let there be blood throughout all the land of Egypt, tam in ligneis vasis quam in saxeis.as much in vessels of wood as in those of stone.’”
Feceruntque Moyses et Aaron sicut præceperat Dominus:And Moses and Aaron did just as the Lord had instructed.et elevans virgam percussit aquam fluminis coram Pharaone et servis ejus:And lifting up the staff, he struck the water of the river in the sight of Pharaoh and his servants.quæ versa est in sanguinem. And it was turned into blood.
Et pisces, qui erant in flumine, mortui sunt:And the fishes that were in the river died, computruitque fluvius, and the river was polluted,et non poterant Ægyptii bibere aquam fluminis, and the Egyptians were not able to drink the water of the river,et fuit sanguis in tota terra Ægypti.and there was blood throughout the entire land of Egypt.
Feceruntque similiter malefici Ægyptiorum incantationibus suis:And the sorcerers of the Egyptians, with their incantations, did similarly.et induratum est cor Pharaonis,And the heart of Pharaoh was hardened, nec audivit eos,he did not listen to them, sicut præceperat Dominus.just as the Lord had instructed.
Avertitque se,And he turned himself away,et ingressus est domum suam, and he entered his house, nec apposuit cor etiam hac vice.neither did he apply his heart to this turn of events.
Foderunt autem omnes Ægyptii per circuitum fluminis aquam ut biberent:Then all the Egyptians dug along the borders of the river for water to drink.non enim poterant bibere de aqua fluminis. For they were not able to drink from the water of the river.
Impletique sunt septem dies,And seven days were completed, postquam percussit Dominus fluvium.after the Lord struck the river.
