Et factus est sermo Domini ad me,And the word of the Lord came to me,dicens:saying:

Quid est quod inter vos parabolam vertitis in proverbium istud in terra Israël, dicentes:“Why is it that you circulate among yourselves this parable, as a proverb in the land of Israel,Patres comederunt uvam acerbam, saying: ‘The fathers ate a bitter grape,et dentes filiorum obstupescunt?and the teeth of the sons have been affected.’

Vivo ego,As I live, dicit Dominus Deus, says the Lord God,si erit ultra vobis parabola hæc in proverbium in Israël.this parable shall no longer be a proverb for you in Israel.

Ecce omnes animæ meæ sunt:Behold,ut anima patris, all souls are mine.itaJust as the soul of the father is mine,et anima filii mea est:so also is the soul of the son.anima quæ peccaverit,The soul that sins, ipsa morietur.the same shall die.

Et vir si fuerit justus,And if a man is just,et fecerit judicium et justitiam, and he accomplishes judgment and justice,

in montibus non comederit, and if he does not eat upon the mountains,et oculos suos non levaverit ad idola domus Israël:nor lift up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel,et uxorem proximi sui non violaverit, and if he has not violated the wife of his neighbor,et ad mulierem menstruatam non accesserit:nor approached a menstruating woman,

et hominem non contristaverit, and if he has not grieved any man, pignus debitori reddiderit, but has restored the collateral to the debtor, per vim nihil rapuerit:if he has seized nothing by violence, panem suum esurienti dederit, has given his bread to the hungry,et nudum operuerit vestimento:and has covered the naked with a garment,

ad usuram non commodaverit,if he has not lent upon usury,et amplius non acceperit:nor taken any increase,ab iniquitate averterit manum suam,if he has averted his hand from iniquity,et judicium verum fecerit inter virum et virum:and has executed true judgment between man and man,

in præceptis meis ambulaverit,if he has walked in my preceptset judicia mea custodierit, and kept my judgments,ut faciat veritatem:so that he acts in accord with truth, hic justus est;then he is just;vita vivet,he shall certainly live, ait Dominus Deus.says the Lord God.

Quod si genuerit filium latronem,But if he raises a son who is a robber, effundentem sanguinem, who sheds blood,et fecerit unum de istis:and who does any of these things,

et hæc quidem omnia non facientem,(even though he himself does not do any of these things,)sed in montibus comedentem, and who eats upon the mountains,et uxorem proximi sui polluentem:and who defiles the wife of his neighbor,

egenum et pauperem contristantem, who grieves the needy and the poor, rapientem rapinas, who seizes with violence, pignus non reddentem, who does not restore the collateral,et ad idola levantem oculos suos, and who lifts up his eyes to idols, abominationem facientem:committing abomination,

ad usuram dantem, who lends upon usury,et amplius accipientem:and who takes an increase, numquid vivet?then shall he live?Non vivet:He shall not live.cum universa hæc detestanda fecerit,Since he has done all these detestable things, morte morietur;he shall certainly die.sanguis ejus in ipso erit. His blood shall be upon him.

Quod si genuerit filium,But if he raises a son,qui videns omnia peccata patris sui quæ fecit, who, timuerit, seeing all his father’s sins that he has done,et non fecerit simile eis:is afraid and so does not act in a way similar to him,

super montes non comederit, who does not eat upon the mountains,et oculos suos non levaverit ad idola domus Israël,nor lift up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel,et uxorem proximi sui non violaverit:and who does not violate the wife of his neighbor,

et virum non contristaverit, and who has not grieved any man, pignus non retinuerit, nor withheld the collateral,et rapinam non rapuerit:nor seized by violence, panem suum esurienti dederit, but instead has given his bread to the hungry,et nudum operuerit vestimento:and has covered the naked with a garment,

a pauperis injuria averterit manum suam, who has averted his hand from injuring the poor, usuram et superabundantiam non acceperit, who has not taken usury and an overabundance, judicia mea fecerit, who has acted according to my judgments and walked in my precepts,in præceptis meis ambulaverit:then this one shall not die for the iniquity of his father;hic non morietur in iniquitate patris sui, instead, sed vita vivet.he shall certainly live.

Pater ejus,As for his father, quia calumniatus est, because he oppressed and did violence to his brother,et vim fecit fratri, and worked evil in the midst of his people,et malum operatus est in medio populi sui, behold, ecce mortuus est in iniquitate sua.he has died by his own iniquity.

Et dicitis:And you say,Quare non portavit filius iniquitatem patris?‘Why has not the son borne the iniquity of the father?’Videlicet quia filius judiciumClearly,et justitiam operatus est, since the son has worked judgment and justice, omnia præcepta mea custodivit, has observed all my precepts,et fecit illa, and has done them, vivet vita.he shall certainly live.

Anima quæ peccaverit,The soul that sins, ipsa morietur:the same shall die.filius non portabit iniquitatem patris,The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father,et pater non portabit iniquitatem filii:and the father shall not bear the iniquity of the son.justitia justi super eum erit,The justice of the just man shall be upon himself,et impietas impii erit super eum.but the impiety of the impious man shall be upon himself.

Si autem impius egerit pœnitentiam ab omnibus peccatis suis quæ operatus est,But if the impious man does penance for all his sins which he has committed,et custodierit omnia præcepta mea,and if he keeps all my precepts,et fecerit judicium et justitiam, and accomplishes judgment and justice, vita vivet, then he shall certainly live,et non morietur.and he shall not die.

Omnium iniquitatum ejus quas operatus est,I will not remember all his iniquities, which he has worked;non recordabor:by his justice,in justitia sua quam operatus est, vivet.which he has worked, he shall live.

Numquid voluntatis meæ est mors impii,How could it be my will that an impious man should die, dicit Dominus Deus, says the Lord God,et non ut convertatur a viis suis, and not that he should be converted from his wayset vivat?and live?

Si autem averterit se justus a justitia sua,But if a just man turns himself away from his justice,et fecerit iniquitatem secundum omnes abominationes quas operari solet impius, and does iniquity in accord with all the abominations that the impious man so often does, numquid vivet?why should he live?Omnes justitiæ ejus quas fecerat,All his justices, which he has accomplished, non recordabuntur:shall not be remembered.in prævaricatione qua prævaricatus est,By the transgression, in which he has transgressed,et in peccato suo quod peccavit, and by his sin, in which he has sinned,in ipsis morietur.by these he shall die.

Et dixistis:And you have said,Non est æqua via Domini!‘The way of the Lord is not fair.’Audite ergo,Therefore, listen, domus Israël:O house of Israel.numquid via mea non est æqua,How could it be that my way is not fair?et non magis viæ vestræ pravæ sunt? And is it not instead your ways that are perverse?

Cum enim averterit se justus a justitia sua,For when the just man turns himself away from his justice,et fecerit iniquitatem, and commits iniquity, morietur in eis:he shall die by this;in injustitia quam operatus est morietur.by the injustice that he has worked, he shall die.

Et cum averterit se impius ab impietate sua quam operatus est,And when the impious man turns himself away from his impiety,et fecerit judiciumwhich he has done,et justitiam, and accomplishes judgment and justice, ipse animam suam vivificabit:he shall cause his own soul to live.

considerans enim,For by considering and turning himself away from all his iniquities,et avertens se ab omnibus iniquitatibus suis quas operatus est, which he has worked, vita vivet,he shall certainly live,et non morietur.and he shall not die.

Et dicunt filii Israël:And yet the sons of Israel say,Non est æqua via Domini!‘The way of the Lord is not fair.’Numquid viæ meæ non sunt æquæ,How could it be that my ways are not fair, domus Israël,O house of Israel?et non magis viæ vestræ pravæ?And is it not instead your ways that are perverse?

Idcirco unumquemque juxta vias suas judicabo,Therefore, O house of Israel, domus Israël, ait Dominus Deus.I will judge each one according to his ways,Convertimini, says the Lord God.et agite pœnitentiam ab omnibus iniquitatibus vestris,Be converted, and do penance for all your iniquities,et non erit vobis in ruinam iniquitas.and then iniquity will not be your ruin.

Projicite a vobis omnes prævaricationes vestras in quibus prævaricati estis,Cast all your transgressions, by which you have transgressed, away from you,et facite vobis cor novum, et spiritum novum:and make for yourselves a new heart and a new spirit.et quare moriemini,And then why should you die, domus Israël?O house of Israel?

Quia nolo mortem morientis,For I do not desire the death of one who dies, dicit Dominus Deus:says the Lord God.revertimini,So returnet vivite.and live.”
