Et factum est verbum Domini ad me,And the word of the Lord came to me,dicens:saying:
Fili hominis,“Son of man, propone ænigma, propose an enigmaet narra parabolam ad domum Israël,and describe a parable to the house of Israel,
et dices:and you shall say:Hæc dicit Dominus Deus:Thus says the Lord God:Aquila grandis magnarum alarum,A large eagle, longo membrorum ductu, with great wings and elongated pinions, plena plumis et varietate, full of feathers with many colors, venit ad Libanum, came to Lebanon.et tulit medullam cedri. And he took the kernel of the cedar.
Summitatem frondium ejus avulsit,He tore off the summit of its branches,et transportavit eam in terram Chanaan:and he transported it to the land of Canaan;in urbe negotiatorum posuit illam.he placed it in a city of merchants.
Et tulit de semine terræ,And he took from the seed of the landet posuit illud in terra pro semine, and placed it in the ground for seed,ut firmaret radicem super aquas multas:so that it might take firm root above many waters;in superficie posuit illud.he placed it at the surface.
Cumque germinasset,And when it had germinated, crevit in vineam latiorem,it increased into a more extensive vine, humili statura, low in height, respicientibus ramis ejus ad eam, with its branches facing toward itself.et radices ejus sub illa erant:And its roots were underneath it.facta est ergo vinea,And so, it became a vine,et fructificavit in palmites, and sprouted branches,et emisit propagines.and produced shoots.
Et facta est aquila altera grandis,And there was another large eagle, magnis alis, with great wings and many feathers.multisque plumis:And behold,et ecce vinea ista quasi mittens radices suas ad eam, this vine seemed to bend its roots towards him, palmites suos extendit ad illam, extending its branches toward him,ut irrigaret eam de areolis germinis sui.so that he might irrigate it from the garden of its germination.
In terra bona super aquas multas plantata est,It had been planted in a good land,ut faciat frondes, above many waters,et portet fructum,so that it would produce branches and bear fruit,ut sit in vineam grandem.so that it would become a large vine.
Dic:Speak:Hæc dicit Dominus Deus:Thus says the Lord God:Ergone prosperabitur? What if it does not prosper?nonne radices ejus evellet,Should he not pull up its roots,et fructus ejus distringet, and strip off its fruit,et siccabit omnes palmites germinis ejus, and dry up all the branches that it has produced,et arescet, and let it wither,et non in brachio grandi, neque in populo multo, ut evelleret eam radicitus?though he is without a strong arm and without many people to pull it up by the root?
Ecce plantata est:Behold, it has been planted.ergone prosperabitur? What if it does not prosper?nonne, cum tetigerit eam ventus urens,Should it not be dried up when the burning wind touches it,siccabitur, et in areis germinis sui arescet?and should it not wither in the garden of its germination?”
Et factum est verbum Domini ad me,And the word of the Lord came to me,dicens:saying:
Dic ad domum exasperantem:“Say to the provoking house:Nescitis quid ista significent?Do you not know what these things signify?Dic:Say:Ecce venit rex Babylonis in Jerusalem,Behold,et assumet regemthe king of Babylon arrives in Jerusalem.et principes ejus,And he will take away its king and princes,et adducet eos ad semetipsum in Babylonem.and he will lead them away to himself in Babylon.
Et tollet de semine regni,And he will take one from the offspring of the king, ferietque cum eo fœdus, and he will strike a pact with him and receive an oath from him.et ab eo accipiet jusjurandum. Moreover,Sed et fortes terræ tollet,he will take away the strong ones of the land,
ut sit regnum humile,so that it may be a lowly kingdom,et non elevetur, and may not lift itself up,sed custodiat pactum ejus, and may instead keep his pactet servet illud.and serve it.
Qui recedens ab eo misit nuntios ad Ægyptum,But, withdrawing from him, he sent messengers to Egypt,ut daret sibi equos et populum multum:so that it would give him horses and many people.numquid prosperabitur, vel consequetur salutem, qui fecit hæc?Should he who has done these things prosper and obtain safety?et qui dissolvit pactum, numquid effugiet? And should he who has broken the pact go free?
Vivo ego,As I live, dicit Dominus Deus, says the Lord God,quoniam in loco regis qui constituit eum regem,in the place of the king, who appointed him as king, cujus fecit irritum juramentum, whose oath he has made void,et solvit pactum quod habebat cum eo,and whose pact he has broken, under which he was living with him,in medio Babylonis morietur.in the midst of Babylon, he shall die.
Et non in exercitu grandi,And not with a great army, neque in populo multo, faciet contra eum Pharao prælium:nor with many people will Pharaoh undertake a battle against him,in jactu aggeris, et in exstructione vallorum, when he will cast up ramparts and build defenses,ut interficiat animas multas.in order to put to death many souls.
Spreverat enim juramentum,For he has despised an oath,ut solveret fœdus,in that he broke the pact.et ecce dedit manum suam:And behold, he had given his hand. And so,et cum omnia hæc fecerit, since he has done all these things, non effugiet.he shall not escape.
Propterea hæc dicit Dominus Deus:Because of this,Vivo ego, thus says the Lord God:quoniam juramentum quod sprevit,As I live,et fœdus quod prævaricatus est,I will place upon his head the oath that he has spurnedponam in caput ejus.and the pact that he has betrayed.
Et expandam super eum rete meum,And I will spread my net over him,et comprehendetur in sagena mea:and he will be captured in my dragnet.et adducam eum in Babylonem,And I will lead him into Babylon,et judicabo eum ibi in prævaricatione qua despexit me.and I will judge him there for the transgression by which he has despised me.
Et omnes profugi ejus,And all his fugitives, cum universo agmine suo, gladio cadent:with all his procession, will fall by the sword.residui autem in omnem ventum dispergentur:Then the remainder will be scattered into every wind.et scietis quia ego Dominus locutus sum.And you shall know that I, the Lord, have spoken.”
Hæc dicit Dominus Deus:Thus says the Lord God:Et sumam ego de medulla cedri sublimis,“I myself will take from the kernel of the exalted cedar,et ponam:and I will establish it.de vertice ramorum ejus tenerum distringam,I will tear off a tender twig from the top of its branches,et plantabo super montem excelsumand I will plant it on a mountain,et eminentem.lofty and exalted.
In monte sublimi Israël plantabo illud,On the sublime mountains of Israel,et erumpet in germen,I will plant it.et faciet fructum,And it shall spring forth in buds and bear fruit,et erit in cedrum magnam:and it shall be a great cedar.et habitabunt sub ea omnes volucres,And all the birds will live under it,et universum volatile sub umbra frondium ejus nidificabit:and every bird will make its nest under the shadow of its branches.
et scient omnia ligna regionis quia ego Dominus humiliavi lignum sublime,And all the trees of the regions will know that I, the Lord, have brought low the sublime tree,et exaltavi lignum humile;and have exalted the lowly tree,et siccavi lignum viride, and have dried up the green tree,et frondere feci lignum aridum.and have caused the dry tree to flourish. I,Ego Dominus locutus sum, et feci.the Lord, have spoken and acted.”
