Et factum est verbum Domini ad me in anno nono,And the word of the Lord came to me, in the ninth year,in mense decimo,in the tenth month, decima die mensis,on the tenth day of the month, dicens:saying:
Fili hominis,“Son of man, scribe tibi nomen diei hujus, write for yourself the name of this day,in qua confirmatus est rex Babylonis adversum Jerusalem hodie.on which the king of Babylon was confirmed against Jerusalem today.
Et dices per proverbium ad domum irritatricem parabolam,And you shall speak, through a proverb, a parable to the inciting house.et loqueris ad eos:And you shall say to them:Hæc dicit Dominus Deus:Thus says the Lord God:Pone ollam; pone,Set out a cooking pot;inquam, set it out,et mitte in eam aquam.I say, and put water into it.
Congere frusta ejus in eam,Pile together within it every morsel, omnem partem bonam, every good piece, femur et armum, the thigh and the shoulder, electa et ossibus plena.the choice pieces and those full of bones.
Pinguissimum pecus assume,Take the fattest from the flock, compone quoque strues ossium sub ea:and arrange also a heap of bones under it.efferbuit coctio ejus,Its cooking has boiled over,et discocta sunt ossa illius in medio ejus.and its bones in its midst have been thoroughly cooked.
Propterea hæc dicit Dominus Deus:Because of this,Væ civitati sanguinum, thus says the Lord God:ollæ cujus rubigo in ea est,Woe to the city of blood,et rubigo ejus non exivit de ea!to the cooking pot that has rust in it,per partesand whose rust has not gone out of it!et per partes suas ejice eam:Cast it out piece by piece!non cecidit super eam sors.No lot has fallen upon it.
Sanguis enim ejus in medio ejus est;For her blood is in her midst;super limpidissimam petram effudit illum:she has shed it upon the smoothest rock.non effudit illum super terram,She has not shed it upon the ground,ut possit operiri pulvere.so that it could be covered with dust.
Ut superinducerem indignationem meam,So shall I bring my indignation over her,et vindicta ulciscerer, and take my vengeance.dedi sanguinem ejus super petram limpidissimam,I have presented her blood upon the smoothest rock,ne operiretur.so that it would not be covered.
Propterea hæc dicit Dominus Deus:Because of this, thus says the Lord God:Væ civitati sanguinum,Woe to the city of blood, cujus ego grandem faciam pyram!out of which I will make a great funeral pyre.
Congere ossa,Pile together the bones,quæ igne succendam:which I will burn with fire.consumentur carnes,The flesh shall be consumed,et coquetur universa compositio, and the entire composition shall be boiled,et ossa tabescent.and the bones shall deteriorate.
Pone quoque eam super prunas vacuam,Also, place it empty on burning coals,ut incalescat,so that it may be heated,et liquefiat æs ejus, and its brass may melt.et confletur in medio ejus inquinamentum ejus,And let the filth of it be melted in its midst,et consumatur rubigo ejus.and let its rust be consumed.
Multo labore sudatum est,There has been much sweat and labor,et non exivit de ea nimia rubigo ejus, and yet its extensive rust has not gone out of it,neque per ignem.not even by fire.
Immunditia tua execrabilis,Your uncleanness is execrable.quia mundare te volui,For I wanted to cleanse you,et non es mundata a sordibus tuis:and you have not been cleansed from your filth.sed nec mundaberis prius,So then, donec quiescere faciam indignationem meam in te.neither will you be cleansed before I cause my indignation over you to cease.
Ego Dominus locutus sum:I, the Lord, have spoken.veniet,It shall happen,et faciam:and I will act.non transeam,I will not pass over, nec parcam, nor be lenient, nec placabor:nor be placated.juxta vias tuas, et juxta adinventiones tuas judicabo te,I will judge you according to your ways and according to your intentions, dicit Dominus.says the Lord.”
Et factum est verbum Domini ad me,And the word of the Lord came to me,dicens:saying:
Fili hominis,“Son of man, behold, ecce ego tollo a te desiderabile oculorum tuorum in plaga:I am taking away from you, with a stroke, the desire of your eyes.et non planges,And you shall not lament, neque plorabis, and you shall not weep.neque fluent lacrimæ tuæ.And your tears shall not flow down.
Ingemisce tacens:Groan silently;mortuorum luctum non facies:you shall make no mourning for the dead.corona tua circumligata sit tibi,Let the band of your crown be on you,et calceamenta tua erunt in pedibus tuis:and let your shoes be on your feet.nec amictu ora velabis,And you shall not cover your face, nec cibos lugentium comedes.nor shall you eat the food of those who mourn.”
Locutus sum ergo ad populum mane,Therefore, I spoke to the people in the morning.et mortua est uxor mea vespere:And my wife died in the evening.fecique mane sicut præceperat mihi. And in the morning, I did just as he had instructed me.
Et dixit ad me populus:And the people said to me:Quare non indicas nobis quid ista significent quæ tu facis?“Why won’t you explain to us what these things signify, which you are doing?”
Et dixi ad eos:And I said to them:Sermo Domini factus est ad me,“The word of the Lord came to me,dicens:saying:
Loquere domui Israël:‘Speak to the house of Israel:Hæc dicit Dominus Deus:Thus says the Lord God:Ecce ego polluam sanctuarium meum,Behold, I will defile my sanctuary, superbiam imperii vestri, the pride of your realm,et desiderabile oculorum vestrorum, and the desire of your eyes,et super quo pavet anima vestra:and the dread of your soul.filii vestri et filiæ vestræ quas reliquistis,Your sons and your daughters, whom you have forsaken, gladio cadent.will fall by the sword.’
Et facietis sicut feci:And so, you shall do just as I have done.ora amictu non velabitis,You shall not cover your faces,et cibos lugentium non comedetis:and you shall not eat the food of those who mourn.
coronas habebitis in capitibus vestris,You shall have crowns on your heads,et calceamenta in pedibus: non plangetis, and shoes on your feet. You shall not lament, neque flebitis, and you shall not weep.sed tabescetis in iniquitatibus vestris,Instead, you will waste away in your iniquities,et unusquisque gemet ad fratrem suum.and each one will groan to his brother.
Eritque Ezechiel vobis in portentum: juxta omnia quæ fecit,‘And Ezekiel shall be a portent for you. In accord with all that he has done, facietis cum venerit istud:so shall you do, when this will happen.et scietis quia ego Dominus Deus. And you shall know that I am the Lord God.’”
Et tu,“And as for you, fili hominis, son of man, ecce in die qua tollam ab eis fortitudinem eorum, behold,et gaudium dignitatis,in the day when I will take away from them their strength,et desiderium oculorum eorum, and the joy of their dignity, super quo requiescunt animæ eorum, and the desire of their eyes, filiosin which their souls find rest:et filias eorum:their sons and their daughters,
in die illa,in that day,cum venerit fugiens ad te ut annuntiet tibi:when one who is fleeing will come to you, so that he may report to you,
in die,in that day, inquam illa,I say, aperietur os tuum cum eo qui fugit, your mouth shall be opened to him who has fled.et loqueris,And you shall speak,et non silebis ultra:and you shall no longer be silent.erisque eis in portentum,And you shall be for them a portent.et scietis quia ego Dominus. And you shall know that I am the Lord.”
