Et factum est in anno undecimo,And it happened that, in the eleventh year, tertio mense,in the third month, una mensis: factum est verbum Domini ad me,on the first of the month, the word of the Lord came to me,dicens:saying:
Fili hominis,“Son of man,dic Pharaoni regi Ægypti et populo ejus:speak to Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, and to his people:Cui similis factus es in magnitudine tua?To whom can you be compared in your greatness?
ecce Assur quasi cedrus in Libano,Behold, Assur is like the cedar of Lebanon, pulcher ramis, et frondibus nemorosus, with fair branches, and full of leaves, excelsusque altitudine, and of high stature,et inter condensas frondes elevatum est cacumen ejus.and his summit has been elevated above the thick branches.
Aquæ nutrierunt illum; The waters have nourished him.abyssus exaltavit illum:The abyss has exalted him.flumina ejus manabant in circuitu radicum ejus,Its rivers have flowed around his roots,et rivos suos emisit ad universa ligna regionis.and it has sent forth its streams to all the trees of the regions.
Propterea elevata est altitudo ejus super omnia ligna regionis,Because of this, his height was exalted above all the trees of the regions,et multiplicata sunt arbusta ejus, and his groves were multiplied,et elevati sunt rami ejus præ aquis multis.and his own branches were elevated, because of the many waters.
Cumque extendisset umbram suam,And when he had extended his shadow,in ramis ejus fecerunt nidos omnia volatilia cæli:all the birds of the air made their nests in his branches,et sub frondibus ejus genuerunt omnes bestiæ saltuum, and all the beasts of the forest conceived their young under his foliage,et sub umbraculo illius habitabat cœtus gentium plurimarum.and an assembly of the many peoples lived under his shadow.
Eratque pulcherrimus in magnitudine sua,And he was most beautiful in his greatnesset in dilatatione arbustorum suorum:and in the expansion of his groves.erat enim radix illius juxta aquas multas. For his root was near many waters.
Cedri non fuerunt altiores illo in paradiso Dei;The cedars in the Paradise of God were not higher than he was.abietes non adæquaverunt summitatem ejus,The spruce trees were not equal to his summit,et platani non fuerunt æquæ frondibus illius:and the plane trees were not equal to his fullness.omne lignum paradisi Dei non est assimilatum illi,No tree in the Paradise of God was similar to himet pulchritudini ejus.or to his beauty.
Quoniam speciosum feci eum,For I made him beautiful,et multis condensisque frondibus, and dense with many branches.et æmulata sunt eum omnia ligna voluptatis quæ erant in paradiso Dei.And all the trees of delight, which were in the Paradise of God, were jealous of him.
Propterea hæc dicit Dominus Deus:Because of this,Pro eo quod sublimatus est in altitudine, thus says the Lord God:et dedit summitatem suam virentemSince he was sublime in height, atque condensam, and he made his summit green and dense,et elevatum est cor ejus in altitudine sua:and his heart was exalted because of his height,
tradidi eum in manu fortissimi gentium:I have delivered him into the hands of the most powerful one among the Gentiles, faciens faciet ei:so that he will deal with him.juxta impietatem ejus ejeci eum.I have cast him out, in accord with his impiety.
Et succident eum alieni, et crudelissimi nationum,And foreigners, and the most cruel among the nations,et projicient eum super montes:will cut him down. And they will cast him on the mountains.et in cunctis convallibus corruent rami ejus,And his branches will fall in every steep valley,et confringentur arbusta ejus in universis rupibus terræ:and his grove will be broken apart on every cliff of the earth.et recedent de umbraculo ejus omnes populi terræ,And all the peoples of the earth will withdraw from his shadow,et relinquent eum.and abandon him.
In ruina ejus habitaverunt omnia volatilia cæli,All the birds of the air lived upon his ruins,et in ramis ejus fuerunt universæ bestiæ regionis.and all the beasts of the countryside were among his branches.
Quam ob rem non elevabuntur in altitudine sua omnia ligna aquarum,For this reason, none of the trees among the waters will exalt themselves because of their height, nec ponent sublimitatem suam inter nemorosa atque frondosa, nor will they place their summits above the thick branches and foliage, nec stabunt in sublimitate sua omnia quæ irrigantur aquis:nor will any of those that are irrigated stand out because of their height.quia omnes traditi sunt in mortem ad terram ultimam,For they have all been delivered unto death, to the lowest part of the earth,in medio filiorum hominum, into the midst of the sons of men,ad eos qui descendunt in lacum.those who descend into the pit.
Hæc dicit Dominus Deus:Thus says the Lord God:In die quando descendit ad inferos,In the day when he descended into hell, induxi luctum:I led in grieving.operui eum abysso,I covered him with the abyss.et prohibui flumina ejus,And I held back its rivers,et coërcui aquas multas:and I restrained the many waters.contristatus est super eum Libanus,Lebanon was saddened over him,et omnia ligna agri concussa sunt.and all the trees of the field were struck together.
A sonitu ruinæ ejus commovi gentes cum deducerem eum ad infernum cum his qui descendebant in lacum:I shook the Gentiles with the sound of his ruin, when I led him down to hell, with those who were descending into the pit.et consolata sunt in terra infima omnia ligna voluptatis egregia atque præclara in Libano,And all the trees of delights, the finest and best in Lebanon, all that were irrigated with waters, universa quæ irrigabantur aquis.were consoled in the deepest parts of the earth.
Nam et ipsi cum eo descendent in infernum ad interfectos gladio: et brachium uniuscujusque sedebit sub umbraculo ejus in medio nationum. For they, too, will descend with him into hell, to those who have been slain by the sword. And the arm of each one will reside under his shadow, in the midst of the nations.
Cui assimilatus es,To whom can you be compared,o inclyte atque sublimis inter ligna voluptatis?O famous and sublime one, among the trees of pleasure? Behold, ecce deductus es cum lignis voluptatis ad terram ultimam:you have been brought down, with the trees of pleasure, to the lowest part of the earth.in medio incircumcisorum dormies,You will sleep in the midst of the uncircumcised, cum eis qui interfecti sunt gladio:with those who have been slain by the sword.ipse est Pharao,This is Pharaoh,et omnis multitudo ejus, and all his multitude, dicit Dominus Deus.says the Lord God.”
