Veneruntque duo angeli Sodomam vespere,And the two Angels arrived at Sodom in the evening,et sedente Lot in foribus civitatis.and Lot was sitting at the gate of the city.Qui cum vidisset eos,And when he had seen them, surrexit,he rose upet ivit obviam eis:and went to meet them.adoravitque pronus in terram,And he reverenced prone on the ground.

et dixit:And he said:Obsecro,“I beg you, domini,my lords, declinate in domum pueri vestri, turn aside to the house of your servant,et manete ibi:and lodge there.lavate pedes vestros,Wash your feet,et mane proficiscemini in viam vestram.and in the morning you will advance on your way.”Qui dixerunt:And they said,Minime,“Not at all.sed in platea manebimus. But we will lodge in the street.”

Compulit illos oppido ut diverterent ad eum:He pressed them very much to turn aside to him.ingressisque domum illius fecit convivium,And when they had entered his house, he made a feast for them,et coxit azyma, et comederunt.and he cooked unleavened bread, and they ate.

Prius autem quam irent cubitum,But before they went to bed, viri civitatis vallaverunt domum a puero usque ad senem, the men of the city surrounded the house, from boys to old men, omnis populus simul.all the people together.

Vocaveruntque Lot,And they called out to Lot,et dixerunt ei:and they said to him:Ubi sunt viri qui introierunt ad te nocte?“Where are the men who entered to you in the night?educ illos huc,Bring them out here,ut cognoscamus eos.so that we may know them.”

Egressus ad eos Lot,Lot went out to them, post tergum occludens ostium, and blocking the door behind him, ait:he said:

Nolite,“Do not,quæso,I ask you, fratres mei,my brothers, nolite malum hoc facere.do not be willing to commit this evil.

Habeo duas filias, quæ necdum cognoverunt virum:I have two daughters who as yet have not known man.educam eas ad vos, et abutimini eis sicut vobis placuerit,I will bring them out to you; abuse them as it pleases you, dummodo viris istis nihil mali faciatis, provided that you do no evil to these men, quia ingressi sunt sub umbra culminis mei.because they have entered under the shadow of my roof.”

At illi dixerunt: Recede illuc. But they said, “Move away from there.”Et rursus:And again:Ingressus es,“You have entered,”inquiunt, they said,ut advena;“as a stranger;numquid ut judices?should you then judge?te ergo ipsum magis quam hos affligemus. Therefore, we will afflict you yourself more than them.”Vimque faciebant Lot vehementissime:And they acted very violently against Lot.jamque prope erat ut effringerent fores. And they were now at the point of breaking open the doors.

Et ecce miserunt manum viri,And behold, the men put out their hand,et introduxerunt ad se Lot,and they pulled Lot in to them, clauseruntque ostium:and they closed the door.

et eos, qui foris erant,And they struck those who were outside with blindness, percusserunt cæcitate a minimo usque ad maximum, from the least to the greatest, ita ut ostium invenire non possent.so that they were not able to find the door.

Dixerunt autem ad Lot:Then they said to Lot:Habes hic quempiam tuorum?“Do you have here anyone of yours?generum, aut filios,All who are yours, aut filias,sons-in-law,omnes,or sons, qui tui sunt,or daughters, educ de urbe hac:bring them out of this city.

delebimus enim locum istum,For we will eliminate this place,eo quod increverit clamor eorum coram Domino, because the outcry among them has increased before the Lord, qui misit nos ut perdamus illos.who sent us to destroy them.”

Egressus itaque Lot,And so Lot, going out, locutus est ad generos suos qui accepturi erant filias ejus, spoke to his sons-in-law, who were going to receive his daughters,et dixit:and he said:Surgite,“Rise up.egredimini de loco isto:Depart from this place.quia delebit Dominus civitatem hanc. For the Lord will destroy this city.”Et visus est eis quasi ludens loqui. And it seemed to them that he was speaking playfully.

Cumque esset mane,And when it was morning, cogebant eum angeli, the Angels compelled him, dicentes:saying,Surge,“Arise, tolle uxorem tuam, take your wife,et duas filias quas habes:and the two daughters that you have,ne et tu pariter pereas in scelere civitatis.lest you also should perish amid the wickedness of the city.”

Dissimulante illo,And, since he ignored them, apprehenderunt manum ejus, et manum uxoris, they took his hand, and the hand of his wife,ac duarum filiarum ejus,as well as that of his two daughters,eo quod parceret Dominus illi.because the Lord was sparing him.

Eduxeruntque eum,And they brought him out,et posuerunt extra civitatem:and placed him beyond the city.ibique locuti sunt ad eum,And there they spoke to him, dicentes:saying:Salva animam tuam:“Save your life.noli respicere post tergum,Do not look back.nec stes in omni circa regione:Neither should you stay in the entire surrounding region.sed in monte salvum te fac,But save yourself in the mountain,ne et tu simul pereas.lest you also should perish.”

Dixitque Lot ad eos:And Lot said to them:Quæso,“I beg you, domine mi,my lord,

quia invenit servus tuus gratiam coram te,though your servant has found grace before you,et magnificasti misericordiam tuam quam fecisti mecum, and you have magnified your mercy,ut salvares animam meam, which you have shown to me in saving my life, nec possum in monte salvari,I cannot be saved on the mountain,ne forte apprehendat me malum, lest perhaps some misfortune take hold of meet moriar:and I die.

est civitas hæc juxta,There is a certain city nearby,ad quam possum fugere,to which I can flee;parva,it is a little one,et salvabor in ea:and I will be saved in it.numquid non modica est,Is it not a modest one,et vivet anima mea?and will not my soul live?”

Dixitque ad eum:And he said to him:Ecce etiam in hoc suscepi preces tuas,“Behold, even now, I have heard your petitions about this,ut non subvertam urbem pro qua locutus es.not to overturn the city on behalf of which you have spoken.

Festina,Hurry and be saved there.et salvare ibi:For I cannot do anything until you enter there.”quia non potero facere quidquam donec ingrediaris illuc. For this reason,Idcirco vocatum est nomen urbis illius Segor.the name of that city is called Zoar.

Sol egressus est super terram,The sun had risen over the land,et Lot ingressus est Segor.and Lot had entered into Zoar.

Igitur Dominus pluit super Sodomam et Gomorrham sulphur et ignem a Domino de cælo:Therefore, the Lord rained upon Sodom and Gomorrah sulphur and fire, from the Lord, out of heaven.

et subvertit civitates has,And he overturned these cities,et omnem circa regionem, and all the surrounding region:universos habitatores urbium, all the inhabitants of the cities,et cuncta terræ virentia.and everything that springs from the land.

Respiciensque uxor ejus post se,And his wife, looking behind herself, versa est in statuam salis.was turned into a statue of salt.

Abraham autem consurgens mane,Then Abraham, rising up in the morning, ubi steterat prius cum Domino,in the place where he had stood before with the Lord,

intuitus est Sodomam et Gomorrham, looked out toward Sodom and Gomorrah,et universam terram regionis illius:and the entire land of that region.viditque ascendentem favillam de terra quasi fornacis fumum. And he saw embers rising up from the land like smoke from a furnace.

Cum enim subverteret Deus civitates regionis illius,For when God overthrew the cities of that region, recordatus Abrahæ,remembering Abraham, liberavit Lot de subversione urbium in quibus habitaverat.he freed Lot from the overthrow of the cities, in which he had dwelt.

Ascenditque Lot de Segor,And Lot ascended from Zoar,et mansit in monte, and he stayed on the mountain,duæ quoque filiæ ejus cum eo (timuerat enim manere in Segor)and likewise his two daughters with him,et mansit in spelunca ipse,(for he was afraid to stay in Zoar) and he dwelt in a cave,et duæ filiæ ejus cum eo.he and his two daughters with him.

Dixitque major ad minorem: Pater noster senex est,And the elder said to the younger: “Our father is old,et nullus virorum remansit in terra, qui possit ingredi ad nos juxta morem universæ terræ.and no man remains in the land who can enter to us according to the custom of the whole world.

Veni,Come, inebriemus eum vino, let us inebriate him with wine, dormiamusque cum eo,and let us sleep with him,ut servare possimus ex patre nostro semen.so that we may be able to preserve offspring from our father.”

Dederunt itaque patri suo bibere vinum nocte illa. And so they gave their father wine to drink that night.Et ingressa est major,And the elder went in,dormivitque cum patre;and she slept with her father.at ille non sensit,But he did not perceive it,nec quando accubuit filia, neither when his daughter lay down, nec quando surrexit.nor when she rose up.

Altera quoque die dixit major ad minorem:Likewise, the next day, the elder said to the younger:Ecce dormivi heri cum patre meo,“Behold, yesterday I slept with my father, demus ei bibere vinum etiam hac nocte, let us give him wine to drink yet again this night,et dormies cum eo,and you will sleep with him,ut salvemus semen de patre nostro.so that we may save offspring from our father.”

Dederunt etiam et illa nocte patri suo bibere vinum,And then they gave their father wine to drink that night also, ingressaque minor filia, and the younger daughter went in,dormivit cum eo:and slept with him.et ne tunc quidem sensit quando concubuerit,And not even then did he perceive when she lay down, vel quando illa surrexerit.or when she rose up.

Conceperunt ergo duæ filiæ Lot de patre suo. Therefore, the two daughters of Lot conceived by their father.

Peperitque major filium,And the elder gave birth to a son,et vocavit nomen ejus Moab:and she called his name Moab.ipse est pater Moabitarum usque in præsentem diem.He is the father of the Moabites, even to the present day.

Minor quoque peperit filium,Likewise, the younger gave birth to a son,et vocavit nomen ejus Ammon, and she called his name Ammon,id est, that is,Filius populi mei:‘the son of my people.’ipse est pater Ammonitarum usque hodie. He is the father of the Ammonites, even today.
