Profectus inde Abraham in terram australem,Abraham advanced from there into the southern land, habitavit inter Cades et Sur:and he lived between Kadesh and Shur.et peregrinatus est in Geraris. And he sojourned in Gerar.
Dixitque de Sara uxore suo:And he said about his wife Sarah:Soror mea est.“She is my sister.”Misit ergo Abimelech rex Geraræ,Therefore, Abimelech, the king of Gerar,et tulit eam.sent for her and took her.
Venit autem Deus ad Abimelech per somnium nocte,Then God came to Abimelech through a dream in the night,et ait illi:and he said to him:En morieris propter mulierem quam tulisti:“Lo, you shall die because of the woman that you have taken.habet enim virum. For she has a husband.”
Abimelech vero non tetigerat eam,In truth, Abimelech had not touched her,et ait: Domine, and so he said:num gentem ignorantem et justam interficies?“Lord, would you put to death a people, ignorant and just?
nonne ipse dixit mihi:Did he not say to me,Soror mea est:‘She is my sister,’et ipsa ait:and did she not say,Frater meus est?‘He is my brother?’In simplicitate cordis mei,In the sincerity of my heart and the purity of my hands,et munditia manuum mearum feci hoc.I have done this.”
Dixitque ad eum Deus:And God said to him:Et ego scio quod simplici corde feceris:“And I know that you have acted with a sincere heart.et ideo custodivi te ne peccares in me,And therefore I kept you from sinning against me,et non dimisi ut tangeres eam.and I did not release you to touch her.
Nunc ergo redde viro suo uxorem,Now therefore, return his wife to the man, quia propheta est:for he is a prophet.et orabit pro te,And he will pray for you,et vives:and you will live.si autem nolueris reddere,But if you are not willing to return her, scito quod morte morieris tu,know this: you shall die a death,et omnia quæ tua sunt.you and all that is yours.”
Statimque de nocte consurgens Abimelech,And immediately Abimelech, rising up in the night, vocavit omnes servos suos:called all his servants.et locutus est universa verba hæc in auribus eorum,And he spoke all these words in their hearing, timueruntque omnes viri valde.and all the men were very afraid.
Vocavit autem Abimelech etiam Abraham,Then Abimelech called also for Abraham,et dixit ei:and he said to him:Quid fecisti nobis?“What have you done to us?quid peccavimus in te,How have we sinned against you, quia induxisti super me et super regnum meum peccatum grande?so that you would bring so great a sin upon mequæ non debuisti facere, and upon my kingdom?fecisti nobis. You have done to us what you ought not to have done.”
Rursumque expostulans,And remonstrating him again, ait:he said,Quid vidisti,“What did you see,ut hoc faceres?so that you would do this?”
Respondit Abraham:Abraham responded:Cogitavi mecum,“I thought to myself, dicens:saying:Forsitan non est timor Dei in loco isto:Perhaps there is no fear of God in this place.et interficient me propter uxorem meam:And they will put me to death because of my wife.
alias autem et vere soror mea est,Yet, in another way, she is also truly my sister, filia patris mei,the daughter of my father,et non filia matris meæ,and not the daughter of my mother,et duxi eam in uxorem.and I took her as a wife.
Postquam autem eduxit me Deus de domo patris mei,Then, after God led me out of my father’s house, dixi ad eam:I said to her:Hanc misericordiam facies mecum:‘You will show this mercy to me.in omni loco,In every place,ad quem ingrediemur,to which we will travel, dices quod frater tuus sim.you will say that I am your brother.’”
Tulit igitur Abimelech oves et boves,Therefore, Abimelech took sheep and oxen,et servos et ancillas, and men servants and women servants,et dedit Abraham: reddiditque illi Saram uxorem suam, and he gave them to Abraham. And he returned his wife Sarah to him.
et ait:And he said,Terra coram vobis est,“The land is in your sight.ubicumque tibi placuerit habita.Dwell wherever it will please you.”
Saræ autem dixit:Then to Sarah he said:Ecce mille argenteos dedi fratri tuo,“Behold, I have given your brother one thousand silver coins.hoc erit tibi in velamen oculorum ad omnes qui tecum sunt, et quocumque perrexeris:This will be for you as a veil for your eyes, to all who are with you and wherever you will travel.mementoque te deprehensam. And so, remember that you were taken.”
Orante autem Abraham,Then when Abraham prayed, sanavit Deus Abimelech et uxorem,God healed Abimelech and his wife, ancillasque ejus, and his handmaids,et pepererunt:and they gave birth.
concluserat enim Dominus omnem vulvam domus Abimelech propter Saram uxorem Abrahæ.For the Lord had closed every womb of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah, the wife of Abraham.
