Vixit autem Sara centum viginti septem annis. Now Sarah lived for one hundred and twenty-seven years.

Et mortua est in civitate Arbee,And she died in the city of Arba,quæ est Hebron, which is Hebron,in terra Chanaan:in the land of Canaan.venitque Abraham ut plangeret et fleret eam.And Abraham came to mourn and weep for her.

Cumque surrexisset ab officio funeris,And when he had risen up from the funeral duties, locutus est ad filios Heth,he spoke to the sons of Heth, dicens:saying:

Advena sum et peregrinus apud vos:“I am a newcomer and a sojourner among you.date mihi jus sepulchri vobiscum,Give me the right of a sepulcher among you,ut sepeliam mortuum meum.so that I may bury my dead.”

Responderunt filii Heth, dicentes:The sons of Heth responded by saying:

Audi nos,“Hear us,domine:O lord, princeps Dei es apud nos:you are a leader of God among us.in electis sepulchris nostris sepeli mortuum tuum,Bury your dead in our chosen sepulchers.nullusque te prohibere poterit quin in monumento ejus sepelias mortuum tuum. And no man shall be able to prohibit you from burying your dead within his memorial.”

Surrexit Abraham, et adoravit populum terræ,Abraham arose, and he reverenced the people of the land, filios videlicet Heth:namely, the sons of Heth.

dixitque ad eos:And he said to them:Si placet animæ vestræ ut sepeliam mortuum meum,“If it pleases your soul that I should bury my dead, audite me,hear me,et intercedite pro me apud Ephron filium Seor:and intercede on my behalf with Ephron, the son of Zohar,

ut det mihi speluncam duplicem,so that he may give me the double cave, quam habet in extrema parte agri sui:which he has at the far end of his field.pecunia digna tradat eam mihi coram vobis in possessionem sepulchri. He may transfer it to me for as much money as it is worth in your sight, for the possession of a sepulcher.”

Habitabat autem Ephron in medio filiorum Heth. Now Ephron dwelt in the midst of the sons of Heth.Responditque Ephron ad Abraham, cunctis audientibus qui ingrediebantur portam civitatis illius,And Ephron responded to Abraham in the hearing of everyone who was entering at the gate of his city, dicens:saying:

Nequaquam ita fiat,“Let it never be so,domine mi,my lord, sed tu magis ausculta quod loquor.but you should pay greater heed to what I say.Agrum trado tibi,The field I will transfer to you,et speluncam quæ in eo est,and the cave that is in it.præsentibus filiis populi mei;In the presence of the sons of my people, sepeli mortuum tuum.bury your dead.”

Adoravit Abraham coram populo terræ.Abraham reverenced in the sight of the people of the land.

Et locutus est ad Ephron circumstante plebe:And he spoke to Ephron, standing in the midst of the people:Quæso ut audias me:“I ask you to hear me.dabo pecuniam pro agro: suscipe eam,I will give you money for the field.et sic sepeliam mortuum meum in eo.Take it, and so I will bury my dead in it.”

Responditque Ephron:And Ephron responded: “My lord, hear me.

Domine mi, audi me: terra, quam postulas, quadringentis siclis argenti valet: istud est pretium inter me et te: sed quantum est hoc? sepeli mortuum tuum. The land that you request is worth four hundred shekels of silver. This is the price between me and you. But how much is this? Bury your dead.”

Quod cum audisset Abraham,And when Abraham had heard this, appendit pecuniam,he weighed out the money that Ephron had requested, quam Ephron postulaverat,in the hearing of the sons of Heth, audientibus filiis Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, quadringentos siclos argenti probatæ monetæ publicæ.of the approved public currency.

Confirmatusque est ager quondam Ephronis,And having confirmed that the field,in quo erat spelunca duplex,in which there was a double cave overlooking Mamre, respiciens Mambre, formerly belonged to Ephron, tam ipse, both it and the sepulcher, quam spelunca, and all its trees,et omnes arbores ejus in cunctis terminis ejus per circuitum, with all its surrounding limits,

Abrahæ in possessionem,Abraham took it as a possession, videntibus filiis Heth,in the sight of the sons of Hethet cunctis qui intrabant portam civitatis illius.and of everyone who was entering at the gate of his city.

Atque ita sepelivit Abraham Saram uxorem suam in spelunca agri duplici,So then,quæ respiciebat Mambre.Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the double cave of the field that overlooked Mamre.Hæc est Hebron in terra Chanaan. This is Hebron in the land of Canaan.

Et confirmatus est ager,And the field was confirmed to Abraham,et antrum quod erat in eo,with the cave that was in it,Abrahæ in possessionem monumenti a filiis Heth.as a memorial possession before the sons of Heth.
