Quæ postquam gesta sunt,After these things occurred, tentavit Deus Abraham,God tested Abraham,et dixit ad eum:and he said to him,Abraham,“Abraham,Abraham.Abraham.”At ille respondit:And he answered,Adsum.“Here I am.”

Ait illi:He said to him:Tolle filium tuum unigenitum,“Take your only begotten son Isaac, quem diligis, whom you love,Isaac, and go into the land of vision.et vade in terram visionis,And there you shall offer him as a holocaust upon one of the mountains, atque ibi offeres eum in holocaustum super unum montium quem monstravero tibi.which I will show to you.”

Igitur Abraham de nocte consurgens,And so Abraham, getting up in the night, stravit asinum suum, harnessed his donkey, ducens secum duos juvenes, taking with him two youths,et Isaac filium suum:and his son Isaac.cumque concidisset ligna in holocaustum,And when he had cut wood for the holocaust, abiit ad locum quem præceperat ei Deus.he traveled toward the place, as God had instructed him.

Die autem tertio,Then, on the third day, elevatis oculis, lifting up his eyes, vidit locum procul:he saw the place at a distance.

dixitque ad pueros suos:And he said to his servants:Expectate hic cum asino:“Wait here with the donkey.ego et puer illuc usque properantes,I and the boy will hurry further ahead to that place.postquam adoraverimus,After we have worshipped, revertemur ad vos.will return to you.”

Tulit quoque ligna holocausti,He also took the wood for the holocaust,et imposuit super Isaac filium suum:and he imposed it upon his son Isaac.ipse vero portabat in manibus ignem et gladium. And he himself carried in his hands fire and a sword.Cumque duo pergerent simul,And as the two continued on together,

dixit Isaac patri suo:Isaac said to his father,Pater mi.“My father.”At ille respondit:And he answered,Quid vis,“What do you want, fili?son?”Ecce,“Behold,”inquit,he said, ignis et ligna:“fire and wood.ubi est victima holocausti?Where is the victim for the holocaust?”

Dixit autem Abraham:But Abraham said,Deus providebit sibi victimam holocausti,“God himself will provide the victim for the holocaust, fili mi.my son.”Pergebant ergo pariter. Thus they continued on together.

Et venerunt ad locum quem ostenderat ei Deus,And they came to the place that God had shown to him.in quo ædificavit altare,There he built an altar,et desuper ligna composuit;and he set the wood in order upon it.cumque alligasset Isaac filium suum,And when he had bound his son Isaac, posuit eum in altare super struem lignorum.he laid him on the altar upon the pile of wood.

Extenditque manum,And he reached out his handet arripuit gladium, and took hold of the sword,ut immolaret filium suum.in order to sacrifice his son.

Et ecce angelus Domini de cælo clamavit,And behold, an Angel of the Lord called out from heaven,dicens:saying,Abraham,“Abraham,Abraham.Abraham.”Qui respondit: Adsum. And he answered, “Here I am.”

Dixitque ei:And he said to him,Non extendas manum tuam super puerum,“Do not extend your hand over the boy, neque facias illi quidquam:and do not do anything to him.nunc cognovi quod times Deum,Now I know that you fear God,et non pepercisti unigenito filio tuo propter me.since you have not spared your only begotten son for my sake.”

Levavit Abraham oculos suos,Abraham lifted up his eyes, viditque post tergum arietem inter vepres hærentem cornibus, and he saw behind his back a ram among the thorns, caught by the horns, quem assumens obtulit holocaustum pro filio.which he took and offered as a holocaust, instead of his son.

Appellavitque nomen loci illius,And he called the name of that place:Dominus videt.‘The Lord Sees.’Unde usque hodie dicitur:Thus, even to this day, it is said:In monte Dominus videbit.‘On the mountain, the Lord will see.’

Vocavit autem angelus Domini Abraham secundo de cælo,Then the Angel of the Lord called out to Abraham a second time from heaven, dicens:saying:

Per memetipsum juravi,“By my own self, I have sworn, dicit Dominus:says the Lord.quia fecisti hanc rem,Because you have done this thing,et non pepercisti filio tuo unigenito propter me:and have not spared your only begotten son for my sake,

benedicam tibi,I will bless you,et multiplicabo semen tuum sicut stellas cæli,and I will multiply your offspring like the stars of heaven,et velut arenam quæ est in littore maris:and like the sand which is on the seashore.possidebit semen tuum portas inimicorum suorum,Your offspring will possess the gates of their enemies.

et benedicentur in semine tuo omnes gentes terræ,And in your offspring, all the nations of the earth will be blessed, quia obedisti voci meæ.because you obeyed my voice.”

Reversus est Abraham ad pueros suos,Abraham returned to his servants, abieruntque Bersabee simul, and they went to Beersheba together,et habitavit ibi.and he lived there.

His ita gestis,After these things occurred, nuntiatum est Abrahæ quod Melcha quoque genuisset filios Nachor fratri suo:it was reported to Abraham that Milcah, likewise, had borne sons for his brother Nahor:
