Audiens autem Jacob quod alimenta venderentur in Ægypto,Then Jacob, hearing that food was being sold in Egypt, dixit filiis suis:said to his sons:Quare negligitis?“Why are you negligent?

audivi quod triticum venundetur in Ægypto:I have heard that wheat is being sold in Egypt.descendite,Go downet emite nobis necessaria, and buy necessities for us,ut possimus vivere,so that we may be able to live,et non consumamur inopia.and not be consumed by destitution.”

Descendentes igitur fratres Joseph decem,And so,ut emerent frumenta in Ægypto, when ten brothers of Joseph went down to buy grain in Egypt,

Benjamin domi retento a Jacob,Benjamin was kept at home by Jacob, qui dixerat fratribus ejus:who said to his brothers,Ne forte in itinere quidquam patiatur mali:“Lest perhaps he may suffer harm on the journey.”

ingressi sunt terram Ægypti cum aliis qui pergebant ad emendum. And they entered into the land of Egypt with the others who traveled to buy.Erat autem fames in terra Chanaan. For the famine was in the land of Canaan.

Et Joseph erat princeps in terra Ægypti,And Joseph was governor in the land of Egypt, atque ad ejus nutum frumenta populis vendebantur.and grain was sold under his direction to the people.Cumque adorassent eum fratres sui,And when his brothers had reverenced him

et agnovisset eos,and he had recognized them, quasi ad alienos durius loquebatur,he spoke harshly, as if to foreigners, interrogans eos: Unde venistis?questioning them: “Where did you come from?”Qui responderunt:And they responded,De terra Chanaan,“From the land of Canaan,ut emamus victui necessaria.to buy necessary provisions.”

Et tamen fratres ipse cognoscens,And although he knew his brothers, non est cognitus ab eis.he was not known by them.

Recordatusque somniorum,And remembering the dreams,quæ aliquando viderat, which he had seen in another time, ait ad eos:he said to them:Exploratores estis:“You are scouts.ut videatis infirmiora terræ venistis. You have come in order to see which parts of the land are weaker.”

Qui dixerunt:And they said:Non est ita,“It is not so,domine,my lord.sed servi tui venerunt ut emerent cibos. But your servants have arrived in order to buy food.

Omnes filii unius viri sumus:We are all sons of one man.pacifici venimus,We have come in peace, nec quidquam famuli tui machinantur mali.nor do any of your subjects devise evil.”

Quibus ille respondit:And he answered them:Aliter est:“It is otherwise.immunita terræ hujus considerare venistis. You have come to examine the unguarded parts of this land.”

At illi: Duodecim,But they said: “We,inquiunt, your servants, servi tui, fratres sumus, are twelve brothers, filii viri unius in terra Chanaan:the sons of one man in the land of Canaan.minimus cum patre nostro est,The youngest is with our father;alius non est super.the other is not living.”

Hoc est,He said:ait, quod locutus sum:“This is just as I have said.exploratores estis. You are scouts.

Jam nunc experimentum vestri capiam:I will now continue to put you to the test.per salutem Pharaonis non egrediemini hinc,By the health of Pharaoh, you will not depart from here, donec veniat frater vester minimus.until your youngest brother arrives.

Mittite ex vobis unum, et adducat eum:Send one of you and bring him.vos autem eritis in vinculis,But you will be in chains, donec probentur quæ dixistis utrum vera an falsa sint:until what you have said is proven to be either true or false.alioquin per salutem Pharaonis exploratores estis.Otherwise, by the health of Pharaoh, you are scouts.”

Tradidit ergo illos custodiæ tribus diebus. Therefore, he delivered them into custody for three days.

Die autem tertio eductis de carcere,Then, on the third day, he brought them out of prison, ait: Facite quæ dixi, and he said: “Do as I have said,et vivetis: Deum enim timeo.and you will live. For I fear God.

Si pacifici estis,If you are peaceful, frater vester unus ligetur in carcere:let one of your brothers be bound in prison.vos autem abite, et ferte frumenta quæ emistis, in domos vestras,Then you may go away and carry the grain that you have bought to your houses.

et fratrem vestrum minimum ad me adducite,And bring your youngest brother to me,ut possim vestros probare sermones,so that I may be able to test your words,et non moriamini.and you may not die.”Fecerunt ut dixerat,They did as he had said,

et locuti sunt ad invicem:and they spoke to one another:Merito hæc patimur,“We deserve to suffer these things, quia peccavimus in fratrem nostrum, because we have sinned against our brother, videntes angustiam animæ illius, seeing the anguish of his soul, dum deprecaretur nos, when he begged us and we would not listen.et non audivimus:For that reason, idcirco venit super nos ista tribulatio.this tribulation has come upon us.”

E quibus unus Ruben,And Reuben, one of them, ait:said:Numquid non dixi vobis:“Did not I say to you,Nolite peccare in puerum:‘Do not sin against the boy,’et non audistis me?and you would not listen to me?en sanguis ejus exquiritur.See, his blood is exacted.”

Nesciebant autem quod intelligeret Joseph,But they did not know that Joseph understood,eo quod per interpretem loqueretur ad eos.because he was speaking to them through an interpreter.

Avertitque se parumper,And he turned himself away briefly and wept.et flevit:And returning,et reversus locutus est ad eos.he spoke to them.

Tollensque Simeon,And taking Simeon,et ligans illis præsentibus, and binding him in their presence, jussit ministris ut implerent eorum saccos tritico,he ordered his ministers to fill their sacks with wheat,et reponerent pecunias singulorum in sacculis suis, and to replace each one’s money in their sacks, and to give them, datis supra cibariis in viam:in addition, provisions for the way.qui fecerunt ita.And they did so.

At illi portantes frumenta in asinis suis,Then, having loaded their donkeys with the grain, profecti sunt.they set out.

Apertoque unus sacco,And one of them,ut daret jumento pabulum in diversorio, opening a sack to give his beast of burden fodder at the inn, contemplatus pecuniam in ore sacculi, looked upon the money at the sack’s mouth,

dixit fratribus suis:and he said to his brothers:Reddita est mihi pecunia,“My money has returned to me.en habetur in sacco.See,Et obstupefacti,it is held in the sack.”turbatique,And they were astonished and troubled, mutuo dixerunt:and they said to one another,Quidnam est hoc quod fecit nobis Deus?“What is this that God has done to us?”

Veneruntque ad Jacob patrem suum in terram Chanaan,And they went to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan,et narraverunt ei omnia quæ accidissent sibi, and they explained to him all the things that had befallen them, dicentes:saying:

Locutus est nobis dominus terræ dure,“The lord of the land spoke harshly to us,et putavit nos exploratores esse provinciæ.and he considered us to be scouts of the province.

Cui respondimus:And we answered him:Pacifici sumus,‘We are peaceful, nec ullas molimur insidias.and we do not intend any treachery.

Duodecim fratres uno patre geniti sumus:We are twelve brothers conceived of one father.unus non est super,One is not living;minimus cum patre nostro est in terra Chanaan.the youngest is with our father in the land of Canaan.’

Qui ait nobis:And he said to us:Sic probabo quod pacifici sitis:‘Thus will I prove that you are peaceful.fratrem vestrum unum dimittite apud me,Release one of your brothers to me,et cibaria domibus vestris necessaria sumite, and take necessary provisions for your houses,et abite, and go away,

fratremque vestrum minimum adducite ad me,and bring your youngest brother to me,ut sciam quod non sitis exploratores:so that I may know that you are not scouts.et istum,And this one,qui tenetur in vinculis, who is held in chains, recipere possitis:you may be able to receive again.ac deinceps quæ vultis,And thereafter, emendi habeatis licentiam.you shall have permission to buy what you want.’”

His dictis,Having said this, cum frumenta effunderent, when they poured out their grain, singuli repererunt in ore saccorum ligatas pecunias, each found his money tied to the mouth of his sack.exterritisque simul omnibus,And all were terrified together.

dixit pater Jacob:Their father Jacob said,Absque liberis me esse fecistis:“You have caused me to be without children.Joseph non est super,Joseph is not living,Simeon tenetur in vinculis,Simeon is held in chains,et Benjamin auferetis:and Benjamin you would carry away.in me hæc omnia mala reciderunt. All these evils have fallen back upon me.”

Cui respondit Ruben:And Reuben answered him,Duos filios meos interfice,“Put my two sons to death,si non reduxero illum tibi:if I do not lead him back to you.trade illum in manu mea,Deliver him into my hand,et ego eum tibi restituam.and I will restore him to you.”

At ille:But he said:Non descendet, inquit, filius meus vobiscum:“My son will not go down with you.frater ejus mortuus est,His brother is dead,et ipse solus remansit:and he is left alone.si quid ei adversi acciderit in terra ad quam pergitis,If any adversity will befall him in the land to which you travel, deducetis canos meos cum dolore ad inferos.you would lead my grey hairs down with sorrow to the grave.”
