Interim fames omnem terram vehementer premebat.Meanwhile, the famine pressed heavily on all the land.
Consumptisque cibis quos ex Ægypto detulerant,And having consumed the provisions that they had brought out of Egypt, dixit Jacob ad filios suos:Jacob said to his sons,Revertimini,“Returnet emite nobis pauxillum escarum.and buy us a little food.”
Respondit Judas:Judah answered:Denuntiavit nobis vir ille sub attestatione jurisjurandi,“The man himself declared to us, under the attestation of an oath, dicens:saying:Non videbitis faciem meam,‘You will not see my face, nisi fratrem vestrum minimum adduxeritis vobiscum.unless you bring your youngest brother with you.’
Si ergo vis eum mittere nobiscum,If therefore you are willing to send him with us,pergemus pariter,we will travel together,et ememus tibi necessaria:and we will buy necessities for you.
sin autem non vis,But if you are not willing, non ibimus:we will not go.vir enim,For the man,ut sæpe diximus,as we have often said, denuntiavit nobis, declared to us,dicens:saying:Non videbitis faciem meam absque fratre vestro minimo.‘You will not see my face without your youngest brother.’”
Dixit eis Israël:Israel said to them,In meam hoc fecistis miseriam,“You have done this for my misery,ut indicaretis ei et alium habere vos fratrem.in that you revealed to him that you also had another brother.”
At illi responderunt:But they responded:Interrogavit nos homo per ordinem nostram progeniem:“The man questioned us in order, concerning our family:si pater viveret:whether our father lived,si haberemus fratrem:if we had a brother.et nos respondimus ei consequenter juxta id quod fuerat sciscitatus:And we answered him respectively, according to what he demanded.numquid scire poteramus quod dicturus esset:How could we know that he would say,Adducite fratrem vestrum vobiscum?‘Bring your brother with you?’”
Judas quoque dixit patri suo:Likewise,Mitte puerum mecum,Judah said to his father:ut proficiscamur,“Send the boy with me,et possimus vivere:so that we may set out and be able to live,ne moriamur nos et parvuli nostri.lest we and our little ones should die.
Ego suscipio puerum:I accept the boy;de manu mea require illum:require him at my hand.nisi reduxero,Unless I lead him backet reddidero eum tibi, and restore him to you,ero peccati reus in te omni tempore.I will be guilty of a sin against you for all time.
Si non intercessisset dilatio,If a delay had not intervened, jam vice alter venissemus.by now we would have returned here a second time.”
Igitur Israël pater eorum dixit ad eos:Therefore, their father Israel said to them:Si sic necesse est,“If it is necessary to do so,facite quod vultis:then do what you will.sumite de optimis terræ fructibus in vasis vestris,Take, in your vessels, from the best fruits of the land,et deferte viro munera, and carry down gifts to the man:modicum resinæ,a little resin,et mellis, and honey,et storacis, stactes, and storax ointment,et terebinthi, oil of myrrh,et amygdalarum.turpentine, and almonds.
Pecuniam quoque duplicem ferte vobiscum:Also, take with you double the money,et illam, quam invenistis in sacculis, and carry back what you found in your sacks, reportate, ne forte errore factum sit:lest perhaps it was done in error.
sed et fratrem vestrum tollite,But also take your brother,et ite ad virum.and go to the man.
Deus autem meus omnipotens faciat vobis eum placabilem:Then may my Almighty God cause him to be pleased by you. And send your brother,et remittat vobiscum fratrem vestrum quem tenet, whom he holds, back with you, along with this one,et hunc Benjamin:Benjamin. But as for me,ego autem quasi orbatus absque liberis ero.without my children, I will be like one who is bereaved.”
Tulerunt ergo viri munera,Therefore, the men took the gifts,et pecuniam duplicem, and double the money,et Benjamin:and Benjamin.descenderuntque in Ægyptum,And they went down into Egypt,et steterunt coram Joseph.and they stood in the presence of Joseph.
Quos cum ille vidisset et Benjamin simul,And when he had seen them and Benjamin together,præcepit dispensatori domus suæ,he instructed the steward of his house, dicens:saying:Introduc viros domum,“Lead the men into the house,et occide victimas, and kill victims,et instrue convivium:and prepare a feast, quoniam mecum sunt comesturi meridie.because they will be eating with me at midday.”
Fecit ille quod sibi fuerat imperatum,He did what he had been ordered to do,et introduxit viros domum.and he brought the men into the house.
Ibique exterriti,And there, dixerunt mutuo:being terrified,Propter pecuniam, they said one to another:quam retulimus prius in saccis nostris,“Because of the money, introducti sumus:which we carried back the first time in our sacks,ut devolvat in nos calumniam,we have been brought in,et violenter subjiciat servituti et nos,so that he may unleash a false accusation against us,et asinos nostros.and by violence subjugate both us and our donkeys into servitude.”
Quam ob rem in ipsis foribus accedentes ad dispensatorem domus,For this reason, approaching the steward of the house at his door,
locuti sunt:they said:Oramus,“We beg you, domine, lord,ut audias nos.to hear us.Jam ante descendimus ut emeremus escas:We came down once before to buy food.
quibus emptis,And having bought it,cum venissemus ad diversorium, when we arrived at the inn, aperuimus saccos nostros,we opened our sackset invenimus pecuniam in ore saccorum:and found the money in the mouths of the sacks, quam nunc eodem pondere reportavimus.which we now have carried back in the same amount.
Sed et aliud attulimus argentum,But we have also brought other silver,ut emamus quæ nobis necessaria sunt:so that we may buy those things that are necessary for us.non est in nostra conscientia quis posuerit eam in marsupiis nostris. It is not on our conscience who had placed it in our bags.”
At ille respondit: Pax vobiscum,But he responded: “Peace be with you.nolite timere:Do not be afraid.Deus vester, et Deus patris vestri,Your God, and the God of your father, dedit vobis thesauros in saccis vestris:has given you the treasure in your sacks.nam pecuniam, quam dedistis mihi,As for the money that you gave to me,probatam ego habeo.I held it as a test.”Eduxitque ad eos Simeon. And he led Simeon out to them.
Et introductis domum,And having led them into the house, attulit aquam,he brought water,et laverunt pedes suos, and they washed their feet, deditque pabulum asinis eorum.and he gave fodder to their donkeys.
Illi vero parabant munera,But they also prepared the gifts, donec ingrederetur Joseph meridie:until Joseph entered at midday.audierant enim quod ibi comesturi essent panem. For they had heard that they would eat bread there.
Igitur ingressus est Joseph domum suam,And so Joseph entered his house, obtuleruntque ei munera, and they offered him the gifts, tenentes in manibus suis:holding them in their hands.et adoraverunt proni in terram. And they reverenced prone on the ground.
At ille,But he,clementer resalutatis eis, gently greeting them again, interrogavit eos, questioned them, saying:dicens: Salvusne est pater vester senex,“Is your father, the old man about whom you spoke to me,de quo dixeratis mihi? adhuc vivit?in good health? Is he still alive?”
Qui responderunt:And they answered:Sospes est servus tuus pater noster,“Your servant, our father, is safe;adhuc vivit. Et incurvati,he is still alive.” And bowing, adoraverunt eum.they reverenced him.
Attollens autem Joseph oculos,Then Joseph, lifting up his eyes, vidit Benjamin fratrem suum uterinum, saw Benjamin, his brother of the same womb,et ait: Iste est frater vester parvulus, and he said, “Is this your little brother,de quo dixeratis mihi?about whom you spoke to me?”Et rursum: Deus,And again, he said, inquit, misereatur tui,“May God be compassionate to you, fili mi.my son.”
Festinavitque,And he hurried out, quia commota fuerant viscera ejus super fratre suo, because his heart had been moved over his brother,et erumpebant lacrimæ:and tears gushed out.et introiens cubiculum flevit. And going into his chamber, he wept.
Rursumque lota facie egressus,And when he had washed his face, coming out again, continuit se,he composed himself,et ait:and he said,Ponite panes.“Set out bread.”
Quibus appositis,And when it was set out, seorsum Joseph, separately for Joseph,et seorsum fratribus, and separately for his brothers,Ægyptiis quoque qui vescebantur simul, likewise separately for the Egyptians, seorsum (illicitum est enim Ægyptiis comedere cum Hebræis,who ate at the same time, (for it is unlawful for Egyptians to eat with Hebrews,et profanum putant hujuscemodi convivium)and they consider feasting in this way to be profane)
sederunt coram eo,they sat before him, primogenitus juxta primogenita sua,the firstborn according to his birthright,et minimus juxta ætatem suam.and the youngest according to his state of life.Et mirabantur nimis,And they wondered exceedingly,
sumptis partibus quas ab eo acceperant:taking the portions that they received from him.majorque pars venit Benjamin,And the greater portion went to Benjamin, ita ut quinque partibus excederet.so much so that it exceeded five parts.Biberuntque et inebriati sunt cum eo.And they drank and became inebriated along with him.
