Visio Isaiæ,The vision of Isaiah, filii Amos, the son of Amoz, quam vidit super Judam et Jerusalem, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem,in diebus Oziæ,in the days of Uzziah,Joathan,Joatham,Achaz,Ahaz,et Ezechiæ,and Hezekiah, regum Juda.kings of Judah.
Audite,Listen,cæli,O heavens,et auribus percipe,and pay attention,terra,O earth,quoniam Dominus locutus est.for the Lord has spoken.Filios enutrivi,I have nurturedet exaltavi;and raised children,ipsi autem spreverunt me.but they have spurned me.
Cognovit bos possessorem suum,An ox knows his owner,et asinus præsepe domini sui;and a donkey knows the manger of his lord,Israël autem me non cognovit, but Israel has not known me,et populus meus non intellexit.and my people have not understood.
Væ genti peccatrici,Woe to a sinful nation, populo gravi iniquitate,a people burdened by iniquity, semini nequam,a wicked offspring, filiis sceleratis!accursed children.dereliquerunt Dominum; They have abandoned the Lord.blasphemaverunt Sanctum Israël;They have blasphemed the Holy One of Israel.abalienati sunt retrorsum. They been taken away backwards.
Super quo percutiam vos ultra,For what reason shall I continue to strike you, addentes prævaricationem?as you increase transgressions?omne caput languidum,The entire head is feeble,et omne cor mœrens.and the entire heart is grieving.
A planta pedis usque ad verticem,From the sole of the foot, even to the top of the head, non est in eo sanitas;there is no soundness within.vulnus, et livor, et plaga tumens,Wounds and bruises and swelling sores:non est circumligata, these are not bandaged, nec curata medicamine, nor treated with medicine, neque fota oleo.nor soothed with oil.
Terra vestra deserta;Your land is desolate.civitates vestræ succensæ igni:Your cities have been set ablaze.regionem vestram coram vobis alieni devorant,Foreigners devour your countryside in your sight,et desolabitur sicut in vastitate hostili.and it will become desolate, as if devastated by enemies.
Et derelinquetur filia Sion ut umbraculum in vinea,And the daughter of Zion will be left behind, like an arbor in a vineyard,et sicut tugurium in cucumerario, and like a shelter in a cucumber field,et sicut civitas quæ vastatur.and like a city being laid to waste.
Nisi Dominus exercituum reliquisset nobis semen,If the Lord of hosts had not bequeathed us offspring, quasi Sodoma fuissemus,we would have been like Sodom,et quasi Gomorrha similes essemus.and we would have been comparable to Gomorrah.
Audite verbum Domini,Listen to the Word of the Lord, principes Sodomorum;you leaders of the people of Sodom.percipite auribus legem Dei nostri,Listen closely to the law of our God,populus Gomorrhæ.O people of Gomorrah.
Quo mihi multitudinem victimarum vestrarum? The multitude of your sacrifices, dicit Dominus.what is that to me,Plenus sum:says the Lord?holocausta arietum,I am full.et adipem pinguium,I do not desire holocausts of rams,et sanguinem vitulorum et agnorum et hircorum, nor the fat of fatlings, nolui.nor the blood of calves and of lambs and of he-goats.
Cum veniretis ante conspectum meum,When you approach before my sight, quis quæsivit hæc de manibus vestris, who is it that requires these things from your hands,ut ambularetis in atriis meis?so that you would walk in my courts?
Ne offeratis ultra sacrificium frustra:You should no longer offer sacrifice in vain.incensum abominatio est mihi.Incense is an abomination to me.Neomeniam et sabbatum, et festivitates alias,The new moons and the Sabbaths and the other feast days, non feram;I will not receive.iniqui sunt cœtus vestri.Your gatherings are iniquitous.
Calendas vestras,My soul hates your days of proclamationet solemnitates vestras odivit anima mea:and your solemnities.facta sunt mihi molesta; They have become bothersome to me.laboravi sustinens.I labor to endure them.
Et cum extenderitis manus vestras,And so, when you extend your hands, avertam oculos meos a vobis,I will avert my eyes from you.et cum multiplicaveritis orationem,And when you multiply your prayers, non exaudiam: manus enim vestræ sanguine plenæ sunt.I will not heed you. For your hands are full of blood.
Lavamini,Wash, mundi estote;become clean, auferte malum cogitationum vestrarum ab oculis meis:take away the evil of your intentions from my eyes.quiescite agere perverse,Cease to act perversely.
discite benefacere;Learn to do good.quærite judicium,Seek judgment,subvenite oppresso,support the oppressed,judicate pupillo,judge for the orphan,defendite viduam.defend the widow.
Et venite,And then approach and accuse me,et arguite me,says the Lord.dicit Dominus. Then,Si fuerint peccata vestra ut coccinum,if your sins are like scarlet, quasi nix dealbabuntur;they shall be made white like snow;et si fuerint rubra quasi vermiculus, and if they are red like vermillion, velut lana alba erunt.they shall become white like wool.
Si volueritis,If you are willing,et audieritis me,and you listen to me,bona terræ comeditis.then you will eat the good things of the land.
Quod si nolueritis,But if you are not willing,et me ad iracundiam provocaveritis, and you provoke me to anger, gladius devorabit vos, then the sword will devour you.quia os Domini locutum est.For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.
Quomodo facta est meretrix civitas fidelis,How has the faithful city, full of judgment, plena judicii?become a harlot?justitia habitavit in ea,Justice lived in her, nunc autem homicidæ.but now murderers.
Argentum tuum versum est in scoriam;Your silver has turned into dross.vinum tuum mistum est aqua.Your wine has been mixed with water.
Principes tui infideles,Your leaders are unfaithful, socii furum.the associates of thieves.Omnes diligunt munera,They all love gifts;sequuntur retributiones.they pursue rewards.Pupillo non judicant,They do not judge for orphans,et causa viduæ non ingreditur ad illos.and the widow’s case is not brought before them.
Propter hoc ait Dominus, Deus exercituum,Because of this, the Lord God of hosts,Fortis Israël:the Strength of Israel,Heu!says:consolabor super hostibus meis,Ah! I will be consoled over my enemies,et vindicabor de inimicis meis.and I will be vindicated from my adversaries.
Et convertam manum meam ad te,And I will turn my hand to you.et excoquam ad puram scoriam tuam,And I will temper your dross unto purity,et auferam omne stannum tuum.and I will take away all your tin.
Et restituam judices tuos ut fuerunt prius,And I will restore your judges, so that they will be as before,et consiliarios tuos sicut antiquitus;and your counselors as in times long past. After this, post hæc vocaberis civitas justi, you shall be called the City of the Just, urbs fidelis.the Faithful City.
Sion in judicio redimetur,Zion will be redeemed in judgment,et reducent eam in justitia.and they will lead her back to justice.
Et conteret scelestos,And he shall crush the accursedet peccatores simul;and sinners together.et qui dereliquerunt Dominum consumentur. And those who have abandoned the Lord will be consumed.
Confundentur enim ab idolis quibus sacrificaverunt,For they shall be confounded because of the idols, to which they have sacrificed.et erubescetis super hortis quos elegeratis,And you shall be ashamed over the gardens that you chose,
cum fueritis velut quercus defluentibus foliis, when you were like an oak with falling leaves,et velut hortus absque aqua.and like a garden without water.
Et erit fortitudo vestra ut favilla stuppæ,And your strength will be like the embers from stubble,et opus vestrum quasi scintilla, and your work will be like a spark,et succendetur utrumque simul, and both will burn together,et non erit qui extinguat.and there will be no one to extinguish it.
