Onus Babylonis,The burden of Babylon which Isaiah, quod vidit Isaias, the son of Amoz, filius Amos.saw.

Super montem caliginosum levate signum:Over the foggy mountain lift up a sign!exaltate vocem,Raise the voice, levate manum, lift up the hand,et ingrediantur portas duces.and let the rulers enter through the gates!

Ego mandavi sanctificatis meis,In my wrath, I commanded my sanctified ones,et vocavi fortes meos in ira mea,and I called my strong ones, exsultantes in gloria mea.those who exult in my glory.

Vox multitudinis in montibus,On the mountains, there is the voice of a multitude, quasi populorum frequentium; vox sonitus regum,as if of a numerous people, a voice with the sound of kings, gentium congregatarum.of nations gathered together.Dominus exercituum præcepit militiæ belli,For the Lord of hosts has given orders to soldiers of war,

venientibus de terra procul,to those who are arriving from a far off land,a summitate cæli;from the heights of the heavens.Dominus,It is the Lordet vasa furoris ejus, and the instruments of his fury,ut disperdat omnem terram.so that he may bring ruin to all the earth.

Ululate,Wail aloud!quia prope est dies Domini; For the day of the Lord draws near!quasi vastitas a Domino veniet. It will arrive like a devastation from the Lord.

Propter hoc omnes manus dissolventur,Because of it, every hand will fail,et omne cor hominis contabescet, and every heart of man will waste away and be crushed.

et conteretur.Writhing and pain will seize them.Torsiones et dolores tenebunt; They will be in pain, quasi parturiens dolebunt:like a woman in labor.unusquisque ad proximum suum stupebit,Each one will appear stupefied to his neighbor.facies combustæ vultus eorum.Their countenances will be like faces which have been burned up.

Ecce dies Domini veniet,Behold, the day of the Lord approaches:crudelis,a cruel day,et indignationis plenus, et iræ, furorisque, full of indignation and wrath and fury,ad ponendam terram in solitudinem, et peccatores ejus conterendos de ea.which will place the earth in solitude and crush the sinners from it.

Quoniam stellæ cæli,For the stars of the heavens,et splendor earum,in their splendor, non expandent lumen suum;will not display their light.obtenebratus est sol in ortu suo,The sun will be obscured at its rising,et luna non splendebit in lumine suo.and the moon will not shine in her brightness.

Et visitabo super orbis mala,And I will act against the evils of the world,et contra impios iniquitatem eorum;and against the impious for their iniquity.et quiescere faciam superbiam infidelium,And I will cause the pride of the unfaithful to cease,et arrogantiam fortium humiliabo.and I will bring down the arrogance of the strong.

Pretiosior erit vir auro,A man will be more precious than gold,et homo mundo obrizo.and mankind will become like pure refined gold.

Super hoc cælum turbabo; For this purpose, I will stir up heaven,et movebitur terra de loco suo,and the earth will be moved from its place, propter indignationem Domini exercituum, because of the indignation of the Lord of hosts,et propter diem iræ furoris ejus.because of the day of his furious wrath.

Et erit quasi damula fugiens,And they will be like a doe fleeing away,et quasi ovis,or like sheep;et non erit qui congreget.and there will be no one who may gather them together.Unusquisque ad populum suum convertetur,Each one will turn to his own people,et singuli ad terram suam fugient.and every one will flee to his own land.

Omnis qui inventus fuerit occidetur,All who are found will be killed,et omnis qui supervenerit cadet in gladio;and all who are caught unaware will fall by the sword.

infantes eorum allidentur in oculis eorum,Their infants will be thrown down violently before their eyes.diripientur domus eorum,Their houses will be plundered,et uxores eorum violabuntur.and their wives will be violated.

Ecce ego suscitabo super eos Medos,Behold, I will stir up the Medes against them.qui argentum non quærant,They will not seek silver, nec aurum velint;nor desire gold.

sed sagittis parvulos interficient,Instead, with their arrows, they will put the little children to death,et lactantibus uteris non miserebuntur, and they will take no pity on breastfeeding women,et super filios non parcet oculus eorum.and their eye will not spare their children.

Et erit Babylon illa gloriosa in regnis,And then Babylon, the glorious one among kingdoms, inclyta superbia Chaldæorum, that famous pride of the Chaldeans, sicut subvertit Dominus Sodomam et Gomorrham.will be destroyed, even as the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.

Non habitabitur usque in finem,It will not be inhabited, even unto the end,et non fundabitur usque ad generationem et generationem;and it will not be reestablished, even from generation to generation.nec ponet ibi tentoria Arabs,The Arab will not pitch his tents there, nec pastores requiescent ibi.nor will the shepherds take rest there.

Sed requiescent ibi bestiæ,Instead, the wild beasts will rest there,et replebuntur domus eorum draconibus, and their houses will be filled with serpents,et habitabunt ibi struthiones, et pilosi saltabunt ibi;and ostriches will live there, and the hairy ones will leap about there.

et respondebunt ibi ululæ in ædibus ejus,And the tawny owls will answer one another there, in its buildings,et sirenes in delubris voluptatis.and the Sirens in its shrines of pleasure.
