Prope est ut veniat tempus ejus,Her time is drawing near,et dies ejus non elongabuntur.and her days will not be prolonged.Miserebitur enim Dominus Jacob,For the Lord will take pity on Jacob,et eliget adhuc de Israël,and he will still choose from Israel,et requiescere eos faciet super humum suam;and he will cause them to rest upon their own soil.adjungetur advena ad eos,And the new arrival will be joined to them,et adhærebit domui Jacob.and he will adhere to the house of Jacob.

Et tenebunt eos populi,And the people will take them,et adducent eos in locum suum;and lead them to their place.et possidebit eos domus Israël super terram Domini in servos et ancillas:And the house of Israel will possess them, in the land of the Lord, as men and women servants.et erunt capientes eos qui se ceperant,And they will take captive those who had taken them captive.et subjicient exactores suos. And they will subjugate their oppressors.

Et erit in die illa:And this shall be in that day:cum requiem dederit tibi Deus a labore tuo, when God will have given you rest from your labor,et a concussione tua,and from your oppression,et a servitute dura qua ante servisti, and from the difficult servitude under which you served before,

sumes parabolam istam contra regem Babylonis, you will accept this parable against the king of Babylon,et dices:and you will say:Quomodo cessavit exactor;“How is it that the oppressor has ceased, quievit tributum?along with his tribute?

Contrivit Dominus baculum impiorum,The Lord has crushed the staff of the impious, virgam dominantium, the scepter of despots,

cædentem populos in indignatione plaga insanabili, which struck the people in wrath with an incurable wound, subjicientem in furore gentes, which subjugated the nations in fury, persequentem crudeliter.which persecuted with cruelty.

Conquievit et siluit omnis terra,All the earth has become quiet and still;gavisa est et exsultavit;it has been gladdened and has rejoiced.

abietes quoque lætatæ sunt super te,The evergreens, too, have rejoiced over you,et cedri Libani:and the cedars of Lebanon,ex quo dormisti, saying: ‘Since you have slept, non ascendet qui succidat nos.no one has ascended who would cut us down.’

Infernus subter conturbatus est in occursum adventus tui;Hell below was stirred up to meet you at your advent;suscitavit tibi gigantes.it has awakened the giants for you.Omnes principes terræ surrexerunt de soliis suis,All the leaders of the earth have risen from their thrones, omnes principes nationum.all the leaders among the nations.”

Universi respondebunt,Everyone will respond and will say to you:et dicent tibi:“Now you are wounded,Et tu vulneratus es sicut et nos;just as we were;nostri similis effectus es.you have become like us.

Detracta est ad inferos superbia tua,Your arrogance has been dragged down to Hell.concidit cadaver tuum;Your body has fallen dead.subter te sternetur tinea,The moths will be strewn beneath you,et operimentum tuum erunt vermes.and the worms will be your covering.

Quomodo cecidisti de cælo,How is it that you have fallen from heaven,Lucifer,O Lucifer, qui mane oriebaris?who used to rise like the sun?corruisti in terram,How is it that you have fallen to the earth, qui vulnerabas gentes?you who wounded the peoples?

Qui dicebas in corde tuo:And you said in your heart:In cælum conscendam,‘I will climb up to heaven.super astra Dei exaltabo solium meum;I will exalt my throne above the stars of God.sedebo in monte testamenti,I will be enthroned upon the mountain of the covenant,in lateribus aquilonis;on the northern parts.

ascendam super altitudinem nubium,I will ascend above the tops of the clouds.similis ero Altissimo?I will be like the Most High.’

Verumtamen ad infernum detraheris,Yet truly, you shall be dragged down to Hell,in profundum laci.into the depths of the pit.

Qui te viderint,Those who see you,ad te inclinabuntur, will lean toward you, teque prospicient:and will gaze upon you,Numquid iste est vir qui conturbavit terram, saying: ‘Could this be the man who disturbed the earth, qui concussit regna, who shook kingdoms,

qui posuit orbem desertum, who made the world into a desertet urbes ejus destruxit, and destroyed its cities, vinctis ejus non aperuit carcerem?who would not even open a prison for his prisoners?’”

Omnes reges gentium universi dormierunt in gloria,All the kings of the nations throughout the whole world have slept in glory, vir in domo sua;each man in his own house.

tu autem projectus es de sepulchro tuo,But you have been rejected from your grave, quasi stirps inutilis pollutus, like a useless polluted plant,et obvolutus cum his qui interfecti sunt gladio, and you have been bound up with those who were slain by the sword,et descenderunt ad fundamenta laci, and who descended to the bottom of the pit, quasi cadaver putridum.like a rotting carcass.

Non habebis consortium,You will not be associated with them, neque cum eis in sepultura;even in the grave.tu enim terram tuam disperdidisti,For you have destroyed your own land;tu populum tuum occidisti:you have slain your own people.non vocabitur in æternum semen pessimorum. The offspring of the wicked ones will not be called upon for eternity.

Præparate filios ejus occisioni,Prepare his sons for the slaughter,in iniquitate patrum suorum:according to the iniquity of their fathers.non consurgent,They will not rise up,nec hæreditabunt terram, nor inherit the earth, neque implebunt faciem orbis civitatum.nor fill the face of the world with cities.

Et consurgam super eos,But I will rise up against them, dicit Dominus exercituum;says the Lord of hosts.et perdam Babylonis nomen,And I will perish the name of Babylonet reliquias, and its remnants:et germen, both the plantet progeniem, and its progeny, dicit Dominus;says the Lord.

et ponam eam in possessionem ericii,And I will appoint it as a possession for the hedgehog,et in paludes aquarum, with swamps of water.et scopabo eam in scopa terens,And I will sweep it out and wear it away with a brush, dicit Dominus exercituum.says the Lord of hosts.

Juravit Dominus exercituum,The Lord of hosts has sworn, dicens:saying:Si non,Surely,ut putavi, just as I have considered it,ita erit;so shall it be,et quomodo mente tractavi, and in the same manner as I have drawn it through my mind,

sic eveniet:so shall it occur.ut conteram Assyrium in terra mea,So shall I crush the Assyrian in my land,et in montibus meis conculcem eum;and I will trample him upon my mountains,et auferetur ab eis jugum ejus, and his yoke will be taken away from them,et onus illius ab humero eorum tolletur.and his burden will be removed from their shoulder.

Hoc consilium quod cogitavi super omnem terram; This is the plan that I have decided, concerning the entire earth,et hæc est manus extenta super universas gentes.and this is the hand which is extended over all the nations.

Dominus enim exercituum decrevit; For the Lord of hosts has decreed it,et quis poterit infirmare?and who is able to weaken it?et manus ejus extenta; And his hand is extended,et quis avertet eam?so who can avert it?

In anno quo mortuus est rex Achaz,In the year in which king Ahaz died, factum est onus istud:this burden was given:

Ne lætaris,You should not rejoice,Philisthæa omnis tu,all you of Philistia, quoniam comminuta est virga percussoris tui;that the rod of him who struck you has been crushed.de radice enim colubri egredietur regulus,For from the root of the serpent will go forth a king snake,et semen ejus absorbens volucrem.and his offspring will engulf that which flies.

Et pascentur primogeniti pauperum,And the firstborn of the poor will be pastured,et pauperes fiducialiter requiescent;and the poor will rest in faithfulness.et interire faciam in fame radicem tuam,And I will cause your root to pass away by famine,et reliquias tuas interficiam.and I will put to death your remnant.

Ulula,Wail, porta;O gate!clama civitas;Cry out, O city!prostrata est Philisthæa omnis; All of Philistia has been prostrated.ab aquilone enim fumus veniet,For a smoke will arrive from the north,et non est qui effugiet agmen ejus.and there is no one who will escape his army.

Et quid respondebitur nuntiis gentis? And what will be the response to this news among the nations?Quia Dominus fundavit Sion,It will be that the Lord has established Zion,et in ipso sperabunt pauperes populi ejus.and that the poor of his people will hope in him.
