Onus Damasci. The burden of Damascus.Ecce Damascus desinet esse civitas,Behold, Damascus will cease to be a city,et erit sicut acervus lapidum in ruina.and it will be like a heap of stones in ruin.

Derelictæ civitates Aroër gregibus erunt,The cities in ruin will be left for the flocks,et requiescent ibi,and they will take rest there,et non erit qui exterreat.and there will be no one who may terrify them.

Et cessabit adjutorium ab Ephraim,And assistance will cease from Ephraim,et regnum a Damasco;and the kingdom will cease from Damascus.et reliquiæ Syriæ sicut gloria filiorum Israël erunt,And the remnant of Syria will be like the glory of the sons of Israel, dicit Dominus exercituum.says the Lord of hosts.

Et erit in die illa:And this shall be in that day:attenuabitur gloria Jacob, the glory of Jacob will be thinned,et pinguedo carnis ejus marcescet.and the fatness of his flesh will be reduced.

Et erit sicut congregans in messe quod restiterit,And it shall be like the gathering of the harvest which remains,et brachium ejus spicas leget;and his arm will pick the ears of grain.et erit sicut quærens spicas in valle Raphaim. And it shall be like a search for grain in the valley of Rephaim.

Et relinquetur in eo sicut racemus et sicut excussio oleæ duarum vel trium olivarum in summitate rami,And what is left behind in it will be like one cluster of grapes, or like a shaken olive tree with two or three olives at the top of a branch, sive quatuor aut quinque in cacuminibus ejus fructus ejus,or like four or five olives at the top of a tree, dicit Dominus Deus Israël.says the Lord God of Israel.

In die illa inclinabitur homo ad factorem suum,In that day, a man will bow before his Maker,et oculi ejus ad Sanctum Israël respicient;and his eyes will consider the Holy One of Israel.

et non inclinabitur ad altaria quæ fecerunt manus ejus; And he will not bow before the altars that his hands have made.et quæ operati sunt digiti ejus non respiciet lucosAnd he will not consider the things that his fingers have made,et delubra.the sacred groves and the shrines.

In die illa erunt civitates fortitudinis ejus derelictæ sicut aratra,In that day, his strong cities will be abandoned,et segetes quæ derelictæ sunt a facie filiorum Israël;like the plows and the grain fields which were left behind before the face of the sons of Israel,et eris deserta.and you shall be deserted.

Quia oblitus es Dei salvatoris tui,For you have forgotten God your Savior,et fortis adjutoris tui non es recordata:and you have not remembered your strong Helper.propterea plantabis plantationem fidelem,Because of this, you will plant trustworthy plants,et germen alienum seminabis;but you will sow a foreign seed.

in die plantationis tuæ labrusca,In the day of your planting,et mane semen tuum florebit;the wild grapevine and your morning seed will flourish.ablata est messis in die hæreditatis,The harvest has been taken away to the day of inheritance,et dolebit graviter.and you will grieve heavily.

Væ multitudini populorum multorum,Woe to the multitude of many peoples,ut multitudo maris sonantis;like the multitude of the roaring sea!et tumultus turbarum,Woe to the tumult of crowds, sicut sonitus aquarum multarum.like the noise of many waters!

Sonabunt populi sicut sonitus aquarum inundantium,The peoples will make a noise, like the noise of waters overflowing, but he will rebuke him,et increpabit eum,and so he will flee far away.et fugiet procul; et rapietur sicut pulvis montium a facie venti,And he will be quickly taken away, like the dust of the mountains before the face of the wind,et sicut turbo coram tempestate.and like a whirlwind before a tempest.

In tempore vespere,In the time of the evening, behold:et ecce turbatio;there will be a disturbance.in matutino, et non subsistet. When it is early morning, he will not remain.Hæc est pars eorum qui vastaverunt nos, et sors diripientium nos. This is the portion of those who have devastated us, and this is the lot of those who have plundered us.
