Cantabo dilecto meo canticum patruelis mei vineæ suæ.I will sing to my beloved the canticle of my paternal cousin, about his vineyard.Vinea facta est dilecto meo in cornu filio olei.A vineyard was made for my beloved, at the horn in the son of oil.

Et sepivit eam,And he fenced it in,et lapides elegit ex illa, and he picked the stones out of it,et plantavit eam electam;and he planted it with the best vines,et ædificavit turrim in medio ejus, and he built a tower in the middle of it,et torcular exstruxit in ea;and he set up a winepress within it.et exspectavit ut faceret uvas,And he expected it to produce grapes,et fecit labruscas.but it produced wild vines.

Nunc ergo,Now then, habitatores Jerusalem et viri Juda, inhabitants of Jerusalem and men of Judah:judicate inter me et vineam meam.judge between me and my vineyard.

Quid est quod debui ultra facere vineæ meæ, et non feci ei?What more should I have done for my vineyard that I did not do for it?an quod exspectavi ut faceret uvas,Should I not have expected it to produce grapes,et fecit labruscas?though it produced wild vines?

Et nunc ostendam vobis quid ego faciam vineæ meæ:And now, I will reveal to you what I will do to my vineyard.auferam sepem ejus,I will take away its fence,et erit in direptionem;and it will be plundered.diruam maceriam ejus,I will pull down its wall,et erit in conculcationem.and it will be trampled.

Et ponam eam desertam; And I will make it desolate.non putabitur et non fodietur:It will not be pruned, and it will not be dug.et ascendent vepres et spinæ,And briers and thorns will rise up.et nubibus mandabo ne pluant super eam imbrem. And I will command the clouds not to rain upon it.

Vinea enim Domini exercituum domus Israël est;For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel.et vir Juda germen ejus delectabile:And the man of Judah is his delightful seedling.et exspectavi ut faceret judicium,And I expected that he would do judgment,et ecce iniquitas;and behold iniquity,et justitiam, and that he would do justice,et ecce clamor.and behold an outcry.

Væ qui conjungitis domum ad domum,Woe to you who join house to house,et agrum agro copulatis usque ad terminum loci!and who combine field to field, even to the limits of the place!Numquid habitabitis vos soli in medio terræ?Do you intend to live alone in the midst of the earth?

In auribus meis sunt hæc,These things are in my ears, dicit Dominus exercituum;says the Lord of hosts. Otherwise, nisi domus multæ desertæ fuerint, many houses, great and beautiful, grandes et pulchræ,will become desolate, absque habitatore.without an inhabitant.

Decem enim jugera vinearum facient lagunculam unam,Then ten acres of vineyard will produce one small bottle of wine,et triginta modii sementis facient modios tres.and thirty measures of seed will produce three measures of grain.

Væ qui consurgitis mane ad ebrietatem sectandam,Woe to you who rise up in the morning to pursue drunkenness,et potandum usque ad vesperam, and to drink even until evening,ut vino æstuetis!so as to be inflamed with wine.

Cithara, et lyra, et tympanum,Harp and lyre and timbrel and pipe,et tibia, et vinum in conviviis vestris;as well as wine, are at your feasts.et opus Domini non respicitis,But you do not respect the work of the Lord, nec opera manuum ejus consideratis.nor do you consider the works of his hands.

Propterea captivus ductus est populus meus,Because of this, my people have been led away as captives, quia non habuit scientiam, for they did not have knowledge,et nobiles ejus interierunt fame, and their nobles have passed away from famine,et multitudo ejus siti exaruit.and their multitudes have dried up from thirst.

Propterea dilatavit infernus animam suam,For this reason,et aperuit os suum absque ullo termino;Hell has expanded its soul,et descendent fortes ejus, and has opened its mouth without any limits.et populus ejus,And their strong ones,et sublimes gloriosique ejus, and their people,ad eum.and their exalted and glorious ones will descend into it.

Et incurvabitur homo,And man will be bowed down,et humiliabitur vir,and man will be humbled,et oculi sublimium deprimentur.and the eyes of the exalted will be brought low.

Et exaltabitur Dominus exercituum in judicio; And the Lord of hosts will be exalted in judgment,et Deus sanctus sanctificabitur in justitia.and the holy God will be sanctified in justice.

Et pascentur agni juxta ordinem suum,And the lambs will pasture in proper order,et deserta in ubertatem versa advenæ comedent.and new arrivals will eat from the deserts turned into fertile lands.

Væ qui trahitis iniquitatem in funiculis vanitatis,Woe to you who draw iniquity with cords of vanity,et quasi vinculum plaustri peccatum!and who draw sin as if with the rope of a cart,

qui dicitis:and who say:Festinet,“Let him hurry,et cito veniat opus ejus, and let his work arrive soon,ut videamus;so that we may see it.et appropiet,And let the plan of the Holy One of Israel approachet veniat consilium sancti Israël,and arrive,et sciemus illud!so that we may know it.”

Væ qui dicitis malum bonum,Woe to you who call evil good,et bonum malum;and good evil;ponentes tenebras lucem, who substitute darkness for light,et lucem tenebras;and light for darkness;ponentes amarum in dulce, who exchange bitter for sweet,et dulce in amarum!and sweet for bitter!

Væ qui sapientes estis in oculis vestris,Woe to you who are wise in your own eyes,et coram vobismetipsis prudentes.and prudent in your own sight!

Væ qui potentes estis ad bibendum vinum,Woe to you who are powerful at drinking wine,et viri fortes ad miscendam ebrietatem!who are strong men in contriving inebriation!

qui justificatis impium pro muneribus,For you justify an impious man in exchange for bribes,et justitiam justi aufertis ab eo!and you carry away the justice of a just man from him.

Propter hoc,Because of this, sicut devorat stipulam lingua ignis,as the tongue of fire devours stubble,et calor flammæ exurit, and as the heat of a flame burns it completely, sic radix eorum quasi favilla erit,so will their root become like glowing embers,et germen eorum ut pulvis ascendet;and so will their offshoot ascend like dust.abjecerunt enim legem Domini exercituum,For they have cast aside the law of the Lord of hosts,et eloquium sancti Israël blasphemaverunt.and they have blasphemed the eloquence of the Holy One of Israel.

Ideo iratus est furor Domini in populum suum,For this reason, the fury of the Lord has been enraged against his people,et extendit manum suam super eum,and he has extended his hand over them,et percussit eum:and he has struck them.et conturbati sunt montes,And the mountains were disturbed.et facta sunt morticina eorum quasi stercus in medio platearum. And their carcasses became like dung in the midst of the streets. In his omnibus non est adversus furor ejus,After all this, his fury was not turned away;sed adhuc manus ejus extenta.instead, his hand was still extended.

Et elevabit signum in nationibus procul,And he will lift up a sign to nations far away,et sibilabit ad eum de finibus terræ:and he will whistle to them from the ends of the earth.et ecce festinus velociter veniet. And behold, they will rush forward speedily.

Non est deficiens neque laborans in eo;There is no one weak or struggling among them.non dormitabit,They will not become drowsy, neque dormiet;and they will not sleep.neque solvetur cingulum renum ejus,Neither will the belt around their waist be loosened, nec rumpetur corrigia calceamenti ejus.nor the laces of their boots be broken.

Sagittæ ejus acutæ,Their arrows are sharp,et omnes arcus ejus extenti.and all their bows are taut.Ungulæ equorum ejus ut silex,The hoofs of their horses are like flint,et rotæ ejus quasi impetus tempestatis.and their wheels are like the force of a tempest.

Rugitus ejus ut leonis;Their roaring is like the lion;rugiet ut catuli leonum:they will roar like young lions.et frendet,They will both roaret tenebit prædam, and seize their prey.et amplexabitur,And they will wrap themselves around it,et non erit qui eruat.and there will be no one who can rescue it.

Et sonabit super eum in die illa sicut sonitus maris:And in that day, they will make a noise over it, like the sound of the sea.aspiciemus in terram,We will gaze out toward the land,et ecce tenebræ tribulationis, and behold, the darkness of the tribulation,et lux obtenebrata est in caligine ejus.and even the light has been darkened by its gloom.
